Five cases are presented in which appendiceal abscesses were demonstrated by computed tomography (CT) and confirmed at surgery. In another, a feces-filled cecum led to a false positive diagnosis of appendiceal abscess, and this is included as an instructive case. Three of the patients were elderly, with an atypical presentation; in these, CT was especially important in clarifying the diagnosis by including appendiceal abscess in the differential diagnosis of pelvic pathology.

Pick's disease (circumscribed lobar atrophy of the brain) in its typical form, is a so-called presenile type of dementia, i.e. a cerebral disease which begins in the sixth decade of life, and leads to a progressive loss of intellectual capacity traits. Two children with intracranial venous sinus thrombosis complicating mastoiditis prompted review of the experience with these disorders at the The Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago over the past decade. The special status of the strongly haemolytic strains of serovar (sv) 5 of Listeria monocytogenes is reviewed. Besides some biochemical reactions sv 5 strains are characterized by their excessive haemolysis on sheep blood agar and by a positive result of the CAMP test with R. equi. It is known that some children produce parietal spikes, evoked by tactile stimulation to their feet or other parts of their bodies. This paper investigates whether this curious phenomenon remains with the children unchanged for several years and then disappears or whether it has an evolution towards epilepsy. The authors describe two cases of the rare disease lymphangioma hemifaciale. Every ophthalmologist should know this disease in view of the complications such as hemorrhage or erysipelas. Treatment methods are discussed.
