[A study on the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with motor imagery on brain function based on electroencephalogram and near infrared spectrum].

Motor imagery is often used in the fields of sports training and neurorehabilitation for its advantages of being highly targeted, easy to learn, and requiring no special equipment, and has become a major research paradigm in cognitive neuroscience. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), an emerging neuromodulation technique, modulates cortical excitability, which in turn affects functions such as locomotion. However, it is unclear whether tDCS has a positive effect on motor imagery task states. In this paper, 16 young healthy subjects were included, and the electroencephalogram (EEG)

Gender differences in brain region activation during verbal fluency task as detected by fNIRS in patients with depression.

BACKGROUND: Gender plays a role in the mechanisms of depression, but fewer studies have focused on gender differences in the abnormal activation of brain regions when patients perform specific cognitive tasks. METHODS: A total of 110 major depressive disorder (MDD) patients and 106 healthy controls were recruited. The relative change in oxygen-haemoglobin (oxy-Hb) concentration during the verbal fluency task were measured by a 52-channel near-infra-red spectroscopy (NIRS) system. Differences in brain region activation between patients and healthy controls and between genders of depression pat

Test-retest Reliability of Neurovascular Coupling and Impairment in Epilepsy Measured by fNIRS and EEG.

Simultaneous fNIRS-EEG is a cost efficient, noninvasive, and adaptable multimodal imaging method that measures both the hemodynamics and electrical activity of the brain. Neurovascular coupling (NVC) is an important mechanism in the brain in which increased neuronal activity propels an increase in oxygenated hemoglobin as well as decrease in deoxygenated hemoglobin in the local cerebral blood flow to that specific area. Previous literature has suggested that NVC may be impaired in individuals with epilepsy. The unique approach to measure and quantify NVC via multimodal fNIRS-EEG imaging is an

Noninvasive Monitoring of Changes in Cerebral Hemodynamics During Prolonged Field Care for Hemorrhagic Shock and Hypoxia-Induced Injuries With Portable Diffuse Optical Sensors.

INTRODUCTION: Achieving simultaneous cerebral blood flow (CBF) and oxygenation measures, specifically for point-of-care injury monitoring in prolonged field care, requires the implementation of appropriate methodologies and advanced medical device design, development, and evaluation. The near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) method measures the absorbance of light whose attenuation is related to cerebral blood volume and oxygenation. By contrast, diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) allows continuous noninvasive monitoring of microvascular blood flow by directly measuring the degree of light sca

Personalized high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation improves cognition following carbon monoxide poisoning induced amnesia: A case report.

OBJECTIVE: High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) has the potential to improve cognitive functioning following neurological injury and in neurodegenerative conditions. In this case report, we present the first use of HD-tDCS in a person with severe anterograde amnesia following carbon monoxide poisoning. METHOD: The participant underwent two rounds of HD-tDCS that were separated by 3 months (Round 1 = 30 sessions; Round 2 = 31 sessions). We used finite element modeling of the participant's structural MRI to develop an individualized montage that targeted multiple br

Assessing visual motor performance in autistic children based on Kinect and fNIRS: A case study.

In recent years, the incidence rate of children with autism has shown a significant upward trend. Rehabilitation training is an important part of recovery or improvement in autism children. However, during autism rehabilitation training, the methods that can visually reflect and objectively evaluate its effects are seldom considered. Therefore, this study aimed to objectively evaluate the rehabilitation impact of visual-motor skills training in children with autism via quantitative measures. In this study, vision sensors and functional near-infrared spectroscopy were used to monitor and analyz

The abnormal brain activation pattern of adolescents with major depressive disorder based on working memory tasks: A fNIRS study.

OBJECTIVE: Although studies have confirmed that working memory (WM) is impaired among adults with major depressive disorder (MDD), generalizing these neurocognitive impairments to adolescents with MDD would be tenuous. Therefore, separate studies for adolescents with MDD are needed. Relatively little is known about the neural processes associated with WM dysfunction in adolescents with MDD. Thus, we examined whether adolescents with MDD have abnormal brain activation patterns compared to healthy controls (HC) during WM tasks and whether it was possible to distinguish adolescents with MDD and H

Hemodynamic analysis of the frontal cortex using multi-task fNIRS in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate task selection is the key to fNIRS-based major depressive disorder (MDD) diagnosis and treatment; however, there exists no unified rule for task selection, which limits its clinical application. METHODS: Four tasks were employed to investigate the hemodynamic characteristics of MDD during motor, emotional, cognitive, and combinational tasks. A total of 69 subjects were studied: 50 with MDD and 19 healthy controls. The integral value of oxy-hemoglobin and the asymmetric characteristics of the bilateral frontal lobe were used to demonstrate the hemodynamic changes in MDD

The application of indocyanine green (ICG) and near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging for assessment of the lymphatic system in reconstructive lymphaticovenular anastomosis surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Lymphedema has traditionally been managed through noninvasive means with complete decongestive therapy. However, complete decongestive therapy is an intensive program that requires lifelong adherence by patients with lymphedema. More recently, reconstructive surgical procedures have shown promise in improving lymphedema by physiologically restoring lymphatic function. One of these types of procedures, lymphaticovenular anastomosis, relies on technological advances in imaging, particularly indocyanine green lymphangiography. AREAS COVERED: This article reviews indocyanine green a

Cerebral Blood Oxygenation Changes in Juvenile Patients with Delayed Orthostatic Hypotension During an Active Standing Test.

Delayed orthostatic hypotension (OH) is a minor subset of orthostatic dysregulation (OD). Cerebral blood oxygenation in juvenile patients with delayed OH has not been studied. We investigated the bilateral changes in cerebral oxygenation in the prefrontal cortex during an active standing test in 23 juvenile patients with delayed OH using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). We measured the oxy-Hb, deoxy-Hb, and total-Hb during the active standing test. Four observations were made during the test: t1 in a resting supine position, t2 when maintaining blood pressure, and the remaining two (t3, t4)

Neuronal correlates of spider phobia in a combined fNIRS-EEG study.

Specific phobia is associated with aberrant brain activation in confrontation paradigms with phobic stimuli. In previous EEG research enhanced event-related potentials (ERPs) in the late-positive potential (LPP) window have been observed. Further, studies with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and fMRI suggest that spider phobia is associated with enhanced activation within cortical and subcortical areas. In the current study we investigated the neuronal correlates of spider phobia in a combined fNIRS-EEG study. To this end, 37 spider phobic patients (PP) and 32 healthy controls (H

Towards integrative neuromonitoring of the surgical newborn: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The altered neurodevelopment of children operated on during the neonatal period might be due to peri-operative changes in the homeostasis of brain perfusion. Monitoring of vital signs is a standard of care, but it does not usually include monitoring of the brain. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate methods of monitoring the brain that might be of value. We also wanted to clarify if there are specific risk factors that result in peri-operative changes and how this might be evaluated. DESIGN: Systematic review. DATA SOURCES: A structured literature search was performed in MEDLINE in Ovid, Emb

Feasibility study for rapid near-infrared spectroscopic identification of different gallbladder diseases by direct analysis of bile juice.

A whole-sample-covering near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy scheme has been adopted for the simple drop-and-dry measurement of raw bile juice for the identification of gallbladder (GB) diseases of stone, polyp, and cancer. For reproducible measurement, a non-NIR absorbing polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) providing a hydrophobic surface was chosen as a substrate to form bile juice droplets of a consistent shape. To ensure representative spectroscopic sampling, NIR radiation illuminated the whole area of the dried sample for spectral acquisition. The NIR band shapes and relative band intensities of G

Neurophysiological correlates of the attention training technique: A component study.

In the current study, we investigate the neuronal correlates of the Attention Training Technique (ATT), a psychotherapeutic intervention used in metacognitive therapy to enhance flexible cognitive control and ameliorate rumination. We adapted the ATT in a neuroscientific attention paradigm in order to investigate the effects of its components: selective attention, attention switching and divided attention in comparison to a control task. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy was used to measure changes in blood oxygenation of fronto-lateral and parietal cortical areas. Furthermore, subjects ra

A novel near-infrared ratiometric fluorescent probe for cyanide and its bioimaging applications.

A new near-infrared ratiometric type fluorescent probe was prepared. 3-formyl BODIPY derivatives without substituent group in the 2, 6-position was obtained through DDQ oxidation reaction. Furthermore, it reacted with indole salt to produce probe. This probe bears indolium group as the recognition site and the 3-formyl-BODIPY as fluorophore. The specific detection of cyanide was conducted the nucleophilic attack of cyanide toward the indolium group of the probe, breaking the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effect and generating a ratio change in the fluorescence signal. A General Strategy for Development of Near-Infrared Fluorescent Probes for Bioimaging.

Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent dyes with favorable photophysical properties are highly useful for bioimaging, but such dyes are still rare. The development of a unique class of NIR dyes via modifying the rhodol scaffold with fused tetrahydroquinoxaline rings is described. These new dyes showed large Stokes shifts (>110 nm). Among them, WR3, WR4, WR5, and WR6 displayed high fluorescence quantum yields and excellent photostability in aqueous solutions. Moreover, their fluorescence properties were tunable by easy modifications on the phenolic hydroxy group. Based on WR6, two NIR fluorescent turn
