Sociocultural Determinants of Risky Sexual Behaviors among Adult Latinas: A Longitudinal Study of a Community-Based Sample.

Few studies have examined the sociocultural determinants of risky sexual behavior trajectories among adult Latinas. To longitudinally examine the link between sociocultural determinants of risky sexual behaviors, we followed a sample of adult Latina mother-daughter dyads (n = 267) across a 10-year span through four waves of data collection. The present study investigates how risky sexual behavior (operationalized as sex under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, sex without a condom, or multiple sex partners) is affected by: (a) socioeconomic conditions; (b) mental health; (c) medical heal

Intimate partner abuse before and during pregnancy as risk factors for postpartum mental health problems.

BACKGROUND: Although research has established the profound effects that intimate partner abuse can have on postpartum mental health, little is known regarding how this association may change as a function of the timing and type of abuse. This study examined associations of psychological, physical and sexual abuse experienced as adults before and during pregnancy with symptoms of postpartum mental health problems in a non-clinical sample of women. METHODS: English-speaking mothers aged 18 years and older in the metropolitan area of a large, Western Canadian city were recruited to participate i

Age and HIV sexual risk among women in methadone treatment.

This study examines the relationship between age and HIV sexual risk behaviors among a random sample of 372 women in methadone treatment in New York City. Logistic regression results indicate that women of all ages are at risk for HIV through inconsistent condom use. Exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV), alcohol use, and HIV-negative status are associated with inconsistent condom use during vaginal sex. Age (35-44), having a main sexual partner with an HIV risk factor, IPV, and alcohol use are associated with using crack or cocaine during sex. Similarly, age (35-44), having a main sexua

Intimate partner violence among Iraqi immigrant women in Metro Detroit: a pilot study.

Violence against women is an important public health problem. The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) among immigrant Iraqi women, and to explore the association between IPV and self-rated health. A pilot study using a previously published, self-report questionnaire was carried out among a convenience sampling of 55 Iraqi women in greater Detroit. The overall prevalence of controlling behavior, threatening behavior, and physical violence was 93, 76, and 80%, respectively. Approximately 40% of the women reported having poor or fair health, an

Beyond fear: the role of peritraumatic responses in posttraumatic stress and depressive symptoms among female crime victims.

This study examines peritraumatic (and posttrauma) responses in a sample of female crime victims who had been sexually or physically assaulted within the previous 2 months. Women were interviewed about their emotional and behavioral responses during the trauma and assessed for posttraumatic stress disorder and depression symptomatology. Results indicate that women experience a wide range of behavioral and emotional responses during a traumatic event and that these responses have implications for posttrauma adjustment. Women who experienced behaviors typical of a freeze response are more likely

Intimate partner violence against women in eastern Uganda: implications for HIV prevention.

BACKGROUND: We were interested in finding out if the very low antenatal VCT acceptance rate reported in Mbale Hospital was linked to intimate partner violence against women. We therefore set out to i) determine the prevalence of intimate partner violence, ii) identify risk factors for intimate partner violence and iii) look for association between intimate partner violence and HIV prevention particularly in the context of the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV programme (PMTCT). METHODS: The study consisted of a household survey of rural and urban women with infants in Mbale di

Asian/Pacific Islander adolescent sexual orientation and suicide risk in Guam.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the effects of same-sex orientation on suicide risks for Guam's Asian/Pacific Islander adolescents. METHODS: We used a probability sample and logistic regression analysis to identify suicide risk factors. RESULTS: Same-sex orientation was associated with a greater risk of suicide attempt, especially for boys. Adolescents who reported suffering physical abuse in the context of a romantic relationship, engaging in binge drinking, and experiencing feelings of hopelessness were at greater risk for suicidal ideation and attempts. Race/ethnicity was associated with suicide

Psychological abuse and posttraumatic stress disorder in battered women: examining the roles of shame and guilt.

Psychological abuse among battered women has been relatively understudied. However, battered women's reports in the existing qualitative and quantitative research suggest that the effects of psychological abuse can be even more damaging than the effects of physical abuse. The current study attempted to clarify the relationship between psychological abuse and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within a sample of battered women by statistically controlling for the effects of physical abuse. This study also explored the affective experiences of shame and guilt as important variables in the deve

Association between partner violence, and the appearance of symptoms of sexually transmitted infections, and reproductive tract infections among Afghan refugee women in Iran: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Partner violence suffered by refugee women is a topic of debate. Symptoms of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and reproductive tract infections (RTIs) may be a consequence of this violence. This study aimed to determine the possible associations between partner violence and the appearance of symptoms of STIs/RTIs among Afghan women in Iran. METHODS: This cross-sectional population-based household survey was conducted with 188 reproductive-age Afghan refugee women residing in a refugee settlement in a selected city of Iran in 2016-17. Data were collected using four self-repor

Turkısh women's experıences of early and forced marrıage: a meta-synthesıs study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of early or forced marriage among women in Türkiye is 24.2%. The limited knowledge of family planning among these young women leads to higher rates of unintended pregnancies, postnatal depression, frequent and early pregnancies, as well as an increase in health-compromising miscarriages and curettages, which collectively contribute to elevated maternal and child mortality rates. AIM: The study seeks to construct a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the marital experiences of women in Türkiye who were married at a young age or against their will. By synthesiz

Psychological intimate partner violence and sexual risk behavior: examining the role of distinct posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms in the partner violence-sexual risk link.

BACKGROUND: Research has examined how physical and sexual intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization increases sexual risk behavior, yet research is lacking on 1) the effect of psychological IPV on sexual risk behavior and 2) factors through which psychological IPV may be linked to sexual risk behavior. METHODS: The current study examined the relationship between psychological IPV and sexual risk behavior controlling for other forms of IPV (i.e., physical and sexual) in a sample of 186 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative community women currently experiencing IPV. Further, this stu

Women's perspectives on female-initiated barrier methods for the prevention of HIV in the context of methamphetamine use and partner violence.

BACKGROUND: Female-initiated barrier methods for the prevention of HIV may be an effective alternative for drug-using women who are unable to negotiate safe sex, often as a result of physical and/or sexual partner violence. METHODS: Utilizing a SAVA (substance abuse, violence, and AIDS) syndemic framework, we qualitatively examined perspectives on female condoms and vaginal microbicides among 18 women with histories of methamphetamine abuse and partner violence in San Diego, California. FINDINGS: Most women were not interested in female condoms owing to perceived discomfort, difficulty of in
