The mystic experience: a psychiatric reflection.

This paper reviews the phenomenology of the mystical experience and its varied contexts epilepsy, toxicity, organic brain syndromes, the major psychoses and hysterical dissociative states as well as in apparently normal persons. The impact of the experience on the personality is noted and its significance briefly reviewed. The author notes that two fallacies await the unwary psychiatrist: the fallacy of reductionism which defines the mystical experience in pathological terms only; and the fallacy of speculation without adequate philosophical or theological tools.

Psychiatric manifestations accompanying interferon therapy for patients with chronic hepatitis C: an overview of cases in Japan.

Thirty case reports published in Japan that refer to psychiatric symptoms accompanying interferon (IFN) therapy were examined. These papers covered a total of 49 cases. We categorized these 49 cases into 35 cases of mood disorder, 10 of delirium and four of psychotic disorder. The key findings of our study of these cases are as follows: (i) in total, 11 patients had psychiatric past histories: five patients in the mood disorders group were susceptible to the influence of social or psychological factors; (ii) whereas the symptoms of mood disorder or delirium appeared soon after IFN was administ

Mechanisms of comorbidity, continuity, and discontinuity in anxiety-related disorders.

We discuss comorbidity, continuity, and discontinuity of anxiety-related disorders from the perspective of a two-dimensional neuropsychology of fear (threat avoidance) and anxiety (threat approach). Pharmacological dissection of the "neurotic" disorders justifies both a categorical division between fear and anxiety and a subdivision of each mapped to a hierarchy of neural modules that process different immediacies of threat. It is critical that each module can generate normal responses, symptoms of another syndrome, or syndromal responses. We discuss the resultant possibilities for comorbid dy

Prevalence of psychiatric co-morbidity in treatment-seeking problem gamblers: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to systematically review and meta-analyse the prevalence of co-morbid psychiatric disorders (DSM-IV Axis I disorders) among treatment-seeking problem gamblers. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted for peer-reviewed studies that provided prevalence estimates of Axis I psychiatric disorders in individuals seeking psychological or pharmacological treatment for problem gambling (including pathological gambling). Meta-analytic techniques were performed to estimate the weighted mean effect size and heterogeneity across studies. RESULTS: Results from 36 st

Mobile Intervention for Individuals With Psychosis, Dual Disorders, and Their Common Comorbidities: A Literature Review.

Over 50% of people diagnosed with a severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, will meet criteria for a substance use disorder in their lifetime. This dual disorder often starts during youth and leads to significant societal costs, including lower employability rates, more hospitalizations, and higher risk of homelessness and of suicide attempts when compared to those with a serious mental illness without substance misuse. Moreover, many individuals presenting with comorbid disorders also present with other psychological difficulties as well, such as personality disorder

Behavioral Addictive Disorders in Children and Adolescents.

Behavioral addictive disorders (BADs) are syndromes similar to substance use disorders (SUDs) but with a focus on behaviors rather than on use of psychoactive substances. These non-substance-related disorders occur when typical, rewarding behaviors, such as gambling, playing video games, and using social media, are done in excess, affecting daily functioning and/or inducing severe psychological distress. BADs are chronic and relapsing, and characterized by a failure to resist an impulse, drive, or temptation to perform an act despite adverse consequences. They are common among youth and linked…

Attachment and emotion regulation in substance addictions and behavioral addictions.

Background Risky behaviors have been related to emotional regulation and attachment, which may constitute risk factors for developing an addictive behavior. However, there may also be differences between substance and non-substance-related addictions. Aims This study aimed to examine the relationship of emotional regulation and attachment, with substance (alcohol and drug abuse), and non-substance-related addictions (gambling disorder, video game addiction, and problematic Internet use) in adolescents and emerging adults. The study also aimed to examine gender differences for such predictors.

Computational models of behavioral addictions: State of the art and future directions.

Non-pharmacological behavioral addictions, such as pathological gambling, videogaming, social networking, or internet use, are becoming major public health concerns. It is not yet clear how behavioral addictions could share many major neurobiological and behavioral characteristics with substance use disorders, despite the absence of direct pharmacological influences. A deeper understanding of the neurocognitive mechanisms of addictive behavior is needed, and computational modeling could be one promising approach to explain intricately entwined cognitive and neural dynamics. This review describ

Impact of global public health days on online health-information-seeking behavior related to substance use: An analysis of five-year data.

The United Nations Organizations observe various global public health days (GPHDs) (also known as world days) throughout the year. We aimed to assess the impact of GPSDs on online health information-seeking behavior related to substance use in the Indian context. We used the Google Trends data for this study using standard guidelines. We conducted a topic search for the query "Substance abuse" to capture online information-seeking behavior (OHISB) for substance use disorder-related searches. The data were analyzed using the Joinpoint Regression software. Joinpoint regression model analysis was

A longitudinal study of reciprocal risk between mental and substance use disorders among Mexican youth.

OBJECTIVE: Cross-sectional studies have documented a large co-occurrence of alcohol, drug and tobacco use and disorders with mood, anxiety and disruptive behavior disorders. Longitudinal research among adolescents is much more limited and inconsistent. We tested for possible prospective associations of alcohol, drug, and tobacco use and disorders with an array of anxiety, mood and disruptive behavior disorders from adolescence to early adulthood. METHODS: We estimated prospective associations from a follow-up conducted in 2013 (n = 1071; ages 19-26) of the original Mexican Adolescent Mental H

The prevalence of QT prolongation in a population of patients with substance use disorders.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Drug induced QT prolongation occurs in patients with substance use disorders from prescription medications that prolong the QT, such as methadone. Knowing the prevalence of QT prolongation in this population is important for prescribers. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of QT prolongation in patients with current substance use disorders. DESIGN AND METHODS: We undertook a retrospective review of electrocardiograms (ECG) from patients with substance use disorders from an urban general hospital with a large drug and alcohol service and toxicology unit. ECGs

Successful symptom-based management of active withdrawal from multiple illicit benzodiazepines.

Benzodiazepines are among the most often misused medications. Medication tapering is required to prevent lethal withdrawal symptoms associated with abrupt cessation. The authors report a case of a male in his early 20s who presented following a seizure precipitated by the abrupt cessation of multiple illicit substances. Further history identified bromazolam, flubromazepam, alcohol, kratom, tianeptine and phenibut to be the predominant substances involved in his presentation. The lack of approved long-acting benzodiazepine equivalents for bromazolam and flubromazolam and kratom's inhibition of

Re-examining mandatory drug testing in Australian prisons.

Mandatory drug testing is commonly used in Australian prisons to detect and deter drug use. In this commentary, we review the limited evidence for mandatory drug testing programs, highlight potential harms associated with their implementation and provide recommendations for drug surveillance in prisons concordant with a harm minimisation framework.

Approaches and reporting of alcohol and other drug testing for injured patients in hospital-based studies: A systematic review.

ISSUE: Hospital alcohol and/or other drug (AOD) testing is important for identifying AOD-related injuries; however, testing methods vary. This systematic review aimed to examine biological AOD testing methods from hospital-based studies of injured patients and quantify what proportion reported key information on those testing methods. APPROACH: Observational studies published in English from 2010 onwards involving biological AOD testing for injured patients presenting to hospital were included. Studies examining single injury causes were excluded. Extracted data included concentration thresho

"If they get out of drug rehab centers, they're on their own": Opportunities and challenges for people released from compulsory drug rehabilitation centers to communities in Vietnam.

INTRODUCTION: Compulsory drug rehabilitation is a major governmental response to illicit drug use in Vietnam and other countries in Asia. Long-term compulsory rehabilitation is associated with negative health, social and economic outcomes. The transition to community-based services for people released from compulsory drug rehabilitation has been problematic not only in Vietnam. This study utilized the WHO Health System Building Blocks Framework to examine the opportunities and challenges for people with substance use disorders (SUD) who are released from compulsory drug rehabilitation back int

Social and environmental determinants influencing injection drug use and HIV risk among two sister cities on the US-Mexico border: a comparative cross-sectional study, 2016-2018.

The economic, social, cultural and political milieus that influence injection drug-related HIV risk behaviors along the US-Mexico border in the previous decade have been studied comparing cities on an East-West axis. In an effort to inform interventions targeting factors beyond the individual level, we used a cross-sectional study design comparing people who inject drugs during 2016-2018, living on a North-South axis, in two cities-Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico and El Paso, Texas, USA-situated at the midpoint of the 2000 US-Mexico borderland stretch. We conceptualize injection drug use and
