A Flexible Wireless Passive Platform for Decoupled Electrolyte and Temperature Sensing Toward Heat‑Stress Assessment.

Strenuous exercise and heat exposure can significantly elevate core body temperature and induce profuse sweating, leading to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and an increased risk of heat stress. Simultaneous yet decoupled monitoring of thermal and sweating-related signals is therefore essential for reliable physiological assessment under intense motion. Here, we report a flexible, wireless, and fully passive dual-mode sensing platform that enables independent detection of sweat accumulation and skin temperature on a single LC resonant architecture. The system integrates a sweat-responsive …

Customizable bio-based coating of phase-transited lysozyme-COS for durable antibacterial and moisture management on wool fabric.

Textiles with efficient moisture management provide a comfortable microenvironment for human body. However, little attention has been paid to sweat-induced bacterial growth alongside. In this study, chitooligosaccharide (COS) was used to modify lysozyme (Lyz-COS) to obtain more excellent antibacterial activity. Lyz-COS could undergo an amyloid-like aggregation by reducing its disulfide bond and hydrogen bond triggered by thiourea dioxide (TD). The Phase-Transited Lyz-COS (PTL-COS) coating increases the hydrophilicity and antibacterial properties of wool fabrics, which can withstand 50 washing …

Assessing sudomotor impairment in patients with peripheral neuropathy: Comparison between electrochemical skin conductance and skin biopsy.

OBJECTIVE: Sudoscan provides a rapid assessment of sudomotor function based on the measurement of electrochemical skin conductance (ESC), which is thought to be proportional to small nerve fibres innervating the sweat glands. However, the relationship between ESC and small nerve fibre density on skin biopsy remains unclear. METHODS: In a retrospective single-centre study, we compared ESC measurements with autonomic sweat gland nerve fibre density (SGNFD) and somatic intraepidermal nerve fibre density (IENFD) in patients with polyneuropathy. RESULTS: 63 patients were included (mean age: 60.6 …

Acute Hyperhidrosis: A Clue to Underlying Autonomic Dysfunction and a Rare Neurological Disorder.

Acute hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive sweating. In the absence of other symptoms, the symptoms of sweating alone are often benign and may be ignored by patients and clinicians. Rarely, hyperhidrosis may be a harbinger of an underlying severe disease. Autonomic nervous system dysfunction leading to hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system can result in excessive sweating. This case report is about a gentleman who presented with acute hyperhidrosis, a symptom of autonomic dysfunction, which turned out to be a relapse of anti-leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) antibody en…

Sudomotor testing discriminates between subjects with and without antibodies against botulinum toxin A--a preliminary observation.

With an increasing number of patients being treated with botulinum toxin A (BTX A), the incidence of neutralizing anti-BTX antibodies (ABA) is rising. Because BTX A is known to inhibit sweating, sudometry seems to be a promising tool to test the efficacy of BTX A. We injected BTX A subcutaneously in normal control subjects and four patients with spasmodic torticollis, two responders and two nonresponders with proven ABA. Sweating was visualized using iodine starch staining and quantified used capacitance hygrometry. BTX A inhibited sweating completely at the injection site in both control subj…

Palmar hyperhidrosis CT guided chemical percutaneous thoracic sympathectomy.

Palmar hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating of the hands causes, to those affected, emotional and physical disturbance and impediment in professional and social life. The cause is unknown. Sweat glands are innervated by the sympathetic chain of the autonomous nervous system. The center of sympathetic regulation of the upper extremities is located between the segments of D.2-D.9 of the spinal cord. Accepted treatment consists of surgery aimed to excise the third thoracic sympathetic ganglion. Besides the surgical procedure as such, and its complications, there are complications inherent to the e…

Methadone-Induced Hyperhidrosis Treated With Oxybutynin.

OBJECTIVES: This case report aims to help healthcare providers and methadone clinic patients to recognize one of the less recognized adverse effects of methadone, hyperhidrosis, and to suggest oxybutynin as a possible solution. METHODS: A 35-year-old man on methadone maintenance therapy presented with excessive sweating, which began promptly after methadone was introduced. Urine toxicology was conducted every 2 weeks to rule out other illicit substances that may have contributed to the sweating. RESULTS: Oxybutynin (5 mg PO QID) resulted in cessation of the methadone-induced hyperhidrosis wi…

Fat injections for the management of post-parotidectomy Frey syndrome: a technical note.

PURPOSE: Frey syndrome (profuse sweating and cutaneous flushing in the area innervated by the auriculotemporal nerve) is a frequent and unpleasant complication of parotidectomy. Fat injections may be useful in preventing the abnormal nerve neo-anastomoses sprouting to the sweat glands that are responsible for gustatory sweating, but have never been used before. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We describe the use of fat injections into the parotid gland of four patients with post-parotidectomy Frey syndrome. RESULTS: All of the patients experienced a clinical and subjective improvement, although slight…

Late-Diagnosed Cystic Fibrosis with Co-Occurring CFTR 3849+10kbC>T and 5T Variants: A Case Report.

Background: The deep-intronic variant 3849+10kbC>T preserves residual CFTR function and is recurrently associated with pancreatic sufficiency, normal or borderline sweat chloride and diagnosis beyond early childhood. A co-occurring poly-T 5T allele adds a second layer of uncertainty: its penetrance depends on the TG repeat carried in cis, and its contribution to the phenotype can be weighed only once its phase relative to the second variant has been established. Case Presentation: A boy with recurrent respiratory infections from the age of three was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at 12 years, …

Greater post-exercise hypotension in healthy young untrained men after exercising in a hot compared to a temperate environment.

This research examined the effects of exercising in a hot compared to a temperate environment on post-exercise hemodynamics in untrained men. We hypothesized exercise in a hot compared to a temperate environment would elicit greater post-exercise hypotension, and this would be attributable to higher cutaneous vascular conductance and sweat loss, and lower heart rate variability (HRV) and cardiac baroreflex sensitivity (cBRS). In a randomized counterbalanced order, 12 untrained healthy men completed two trials involving 40-min leg-cycling exercise at either 23 °C (CON) or 35 °C (HOT). Post-exer…

Melatonin induces a stimulatory action on the scrotal skin components of Soay ram in the non-breeding season.

Fifteen adult Soay rams were employed in this study to investigate the effect of melatonin on the scrotal skin using histological, histochemical, and morphometrical analysis. The results revealed that the melatonin treated group showed a significant increase in the thickness of the epidermis, the cross-sectional area of blood capillaries and nerve fibers compared with the control one. In addition, obvious hypertrophy and hyperplasia were detected in the sebaceous glands in association with a significant increase in the number and diameter of apocrine sweat glands with well-developed secretory …
