Association between malocclusion severity and social anxiety, self-esteem in adolescents: A cross-sectional study.

This study investigates the association between malocclusion severity and social anxiety and self-esteem levels in adolescents and explores factors associated with heterogeneity in these psychological outcomes. A cross-sectional study design was employed. A convenience sample of 190 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years, recruited from the orthodontic department of a hospital from June 2023 to December 2025, was enrolled. Malocclusion severity was assessed using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need-Dental Health Component (IOTN-DHC) and categorized into mild, moderate, and severe groups. Social a

[Effects of childhood trauma on the biochemical correlates of stress in men and women with nonpsychotic mental disorders].

AIM: To investigate gender differences in biochemical characteristics in patients with nonpsychotic mental disorders, and to study their association with childhood trauma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Women (n=308) and men (92) between 18 and 45 years of age, without serious somatic comorbidities, were examined. Laboratory evaluation included markers of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity (cortisol), hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid system (TSH), proinflammatory cytokines (Il-1β and Il-6) and the brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). All participants underwent psychometric testing, which

Global cortical arousal effects in fMRI reveal brain markers of state and trait anxiety.

To personalize the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety, there is a need to identify biological constructs that underlie self-reported symptoms. Notably, physiological responses and levels of arousal are constituents of anxiety, and have widespread ("global") effects on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signals that may provide novel brain markers of anxiety. Here, we modeled autonomic physiological and cortical arousal signatures in fMRI data and determined whether these global fMRI components relate to measures of state and trait anxiety. Additionally, we tested if these global effe

Impact of BRCA1/2 cascade testing on anxiety, depression, and cancer worry levels among unaffected relatives in a multiethnic Asian cohort.

Cascade testing for families with BRCA pathogenic variants is important to identify relatives who are carriers. These relatives can benefit from appropriate risk management and preventative strategies arising from an inherited increased risk of breast, ovarian, prostate, melanoma, and pancreatic cancers. Cascade testing has the potential to enable cost-effective cancer control even in low- and middle-income settings, but few studies have hitherto evaluated the psychosocial impact of cascade testing in an Asian population, where the cultural and religious beliefs around inheritance and destiny

Executive function impairments in fibromyalgia syndrome: Relevance of clinical variables and body mass index.

BACKGROUND: Several investigations suggest the presence of deterioration of executive function in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). The study quantified executive functions in patients with FMS. A wide array of functions was assessed, including updating, shifting and inhibition, as well as decision making and mental planning. Moreover, clinical variables were investigated as possible mediators of executive dysfunction, including pain severity, psychiatric comorbidity, medication and body mass index (BMI). METHODS: Fifty-two FMS patients and 32 healthy controls completed a battery of 14 neuropsycho

Theophylline antagonizes diazepam-induced psychomotor impairment.

Eight healthy men received an oral dose of 0.25 mg/kg diazepam followed 40 min later by an intravenous infusion of 100 ml physiological sodium chloride solution, with or without 4.4 mg/kg theophylline. Psychomotor function was assessed after each blood sampling up to 5 h post-infusion. Thirty min after diazepam psychomotor performance measured by Card Sorting test and Digit Symbol Substitution test was impaired and subjects felt sleepy and could think less clearly (two factors of the Clyde Mood Scale). Theophylline antagonized the diazepam-induced impairment statistically significantly for up

The Dissociative Subtype of PTSD Interview (DSP-I): Development and Psychometric Properties.

The inclusion of the dissociative subtype of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD-DS) in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) reflects the importance of assessing PTSD-DS. We developed the Dissociative Subtype of PTSD Interview (DSP-I). This clinician-administered instrument assesses the presence and severity of PTSD-DS (i.e., symptoms of depersonalization or derealization) and contains a supplementary checklist that enables assessment and differentiation of other trauma-related dissociative symptoms (i.e., blanking out, emotional numbing, alte

[Investigation of sleep and fatigue in patients with cancer].

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of cancer elicits greater distress than any other diagnosis. The prevalence of psychological difficulties is high in cancer, and resources of the medical staff are limited. The development of efficient screening measures is therefore of utmost importance. Sleep is vital to all psychological functioning and poor sleep is a known problem in cancer. AIM: The main goal of the present study was testing of visual analogue scales assessing sleep quality and fatigue. METHOD: Sleep quality and fatigue were assessed with visual analogue scales. The Sleep Condition Indicator

The role of meta-cognitions and thought control techniques in predisposition to auditory and visual hallucinations.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the relationship between a predisposition to hallucinations and meta-cognitive variables and thought-control techniques, controlling for the possible effect of anxiety. In order to do so, we start out with the hypothesis that anxiety does not, in itself, explain the association between meta-cognitions and a predisposition to auditory and visual hallucinations. DESIGN: A within-participants correlational design was employed. METHODS: Four psychometric tests relating to predisposition to hallucinations, anxiety, meta-cognitions and thought-control techniques wer

Mood disorders in patients with motor neuron disease and frontotemporal symptoms: Validation of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale for use in motor neuron disease.

BACKGROUND: Motor neuron disease (MND) is a heterogeneous neurodegenerative disorder, with nearly 50 % of patients exhibiting cognitive and behavioral symptoms in addition to motor decline. Anxiety and depression, though frequently observed in this population, have been understudied in relation to motor and extra-motor profiles. OBJECTIVES: Our study addresses this gap by validating the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale for Motor Neuron Disease (HADS-MND) and investigating the interplay between mood, clincial, and frontotemporal symptoms in a large sample of MND patients. METHODS: A tota
