Sodium hyaluronate can be used during a trabeculectomy to prevent early postoperative hypotony and shallow anterior chamber. To determine its long-term effect on the outcome of filtration surgery, fifteen rabbits underwent a posterior-lip sclerectomy in both eyes. Into their right eyes 0.2ml sodium hyaluronate, and into left eyes 0.2ml balanced salt solution were injected intracamerally. Gross and histopathological differences of bleb were observed. There was no statistically significant difference in longevity of the filtration bleb.

This study presents the results of all patients with congenital glaucoma who were managed at St John Ophthalmic Hospital, Jerusalem from 1981 to 1990. This involved 118 eyes, 174 surgical procedures, and 460 examinations under anaesthesia. All procedures showed decreasing success rates with time. However, trabeculectomy was clearly the most successful in the hands of general ophthalmologists. Careful, long term follow up with particular regard to both intraocular pressure and detection and treatment of amblyopia are emphasised.

We studied 317 eyes, operated on for congenital glaucoma by Elliot, iridencleisis, goniotomy and trabeculotomy with a follow up of 5 to 35 years. Elliot and iridencleisis gave 30 to 50% intraocular pressure stabilisation and 60% bad visual results. Goniotomy gave without treatment 60% pressure stabilisation and 37% good visual results. Trabeculectomy gave 74% pressure stabilisation and 53% good visual results. Trabeculotomy gave the best results and can be considered as the most efficient operation in congenital glaucoma.

A 72-year-old white man who had undergone surgical trabeculectomy and extracapsular cataract extraction with a posterior-chamber lens implantation in the left eye suffered from chronic iridocyclitis for eight months. He subsequently presented with acute hypopyon and vitritis. Anterior-chamber and vitreous cultures were positive for Pseudomonas cepacia. The infection was successfully treated with subconjunctival piperacillin, intravitreal cefotaxime, and intravenous piperacillin and gentamicin. To our knowledge, this is the first documented case of Pseudomonas cepacia endophthalmitis.
