BACKGROUND: Malassezia restricta, a lipophilic and lipodependent yeast belonging to the basidiomycetes group, is an opportunistic fungal pathogen associated with various skin diseases, including seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff. Typically, Malassezia infection in neonates manifests as fungemia or hematogenous dissemination to the bone or lungs. However, vertebral osteomyelitis caused by these fungi is rarely reported owing to non-specific clinical presentations and laboratory/imaging findings. The Pathogen Metagenomics Sequencing (PMseq) technique enables direct high-throughput sequencing of

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, open-cohort, consecutive case series.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the demographic characteristics, clinical features and outcomes in patients undergoing initial in-patient rehabilitation after an infectious cause of spinal cord myelopathy.
SETTING: Spinal Rehabilitation Unit, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Admissions between 1 January 1995 and 31 December 2010.
METHODS: The following data were recorded: aetiology of spinal cord infection, risk factors, rehabilitation length of stay (LOS), level of injury (paraplegia vs tetraplegia), complications related to spinal c

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of anterior fusion option on the short- and long-time outcomes on multilevel spinal reconstructions in young children.
METHODS: Forty-five patients aged under 4 years old (2 years 2 months ± 11 months in average) underwent spinal reconstruction due to tuberculosis spondylitis (35), pyogenic spondylitis (9) and spinal tumors (1) complicated by angular kyphosis exceeded 20° (49.2° ± 14.3° in average). All lesions involved two or more spinal motion segments. Clinical and radiographic data were compared in two groups depended on the types of anterior fusion: tit

In September 2018, the United Nations General Assembly held the first ever meeting to discuss the global epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) and adopted a political declaration titled "United to end tuberculosis: an urgent global response to a global epidemic." The timing of the meeting was prescient but overdue since Mycobacterium tuberculosis surpassed the human immunodeficiency virus as the world's leading infectious killer in 2014. Infection of the central nervous system by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, herein referred to as neurotuberculosis, is the most feared and dangerous form of tuberculosis,

An immune response and protective factors of neutrophil granulocytes were comparatively studied in 61 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, 70 with nephrotuberculosis, and 45 with tuberculous spondylitis. It was shown that there were elevated serum levels of neutrophil cationic proteins in both pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Lower content of intracellular cationic proteins along with suppressed cellular immunity was observed in pulmonary tuberculosis patients with disseminated actively progressive changes. This combination may be regarded as a poor predictor. Higher values of a spe

OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical efficacy of three different surgical approaches in the treatment of thoracolumbar tuberculosis.
METHODS: A total of 138 patients with thoracolumbar tuberculosis treated by open surgery were retrospectively analyzed. The surgical methods were divided into anterior, posterior and anterior-posterior combined. The hospital stays, amount of bleeding, operative time, preoperative, postoperative and last follow-up ESR, CRP, Frankel score, ODI, VAS, correction and loss rate of kyphosis, fusion rate and complications were recorded and analyzed.
RESULTS: The average f

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF) combined posterior fixation for single-segment lumbar tuberculosis (TB).
METHODS: The medical records of spinal TB patients who were admitted to our department from January 2016 to December 2018 were retrospectively reviewed, and those meeting the inclusion criteria were finally included for analysis. The operative time, operative blood loss, hospital stay, visual analogue scale (VAS) score, Oswestry disability index (ODI), Cobb angle of surgical segment, bone graft fusion rate, erythrocytic sedimentation

PURPOSE: To systematically review the clinical manifestations and treatment outcomes of patients with subaxial cervical spinal tuberculosis (SCS-TB) and evaluate the current evidence for surgical or nonsurgical treatment.
METHOD: A systematic review was performed using the PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases. Studies published in English from January 2000 to December 2018 were included in the search. A reference lists search of relevant articles was also conducted for other potential references. The risk of bias was assessed wit

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical efficacy between one-stage combined posterior and anterior approaches (PA-approach) and simple posterior approach (P-approach) for lower lumbar tuberculosis so as to provide some clinical reference for different surgical procedures of lower lumbar tuberculosis.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was made on the clinical data of 48 patients with lower lumbar tuberculosis treated between January 2010 and November 2014. Of them, 28 patients underwent debridement, bone graft, and instrumentation by PA-approach (PA-approach group), and 20 patients underwent debrid

Spinal infections can occur in a variety of clinical situations. Their presentation ranges from the infant with diskitis who is unwilling to crawl or walk to the adult who develops an infection after a spinal procedure. The most common types of spinal infections are hematogenous bacterial or fungal infections, pediatric diskitis, epidural abscess, and postoperative infections. Prompt and accurate diagnosis of spinal infections, the cornerstone of treatment, requires a high index of suspicion in at-risk patients and the appropriate evaluation to identify the organism and determine the extent of

Almost 3% of cases of tuberculosis of the spine develop a severe kyphotic deformity. The patients at risk are those who developed the disease under the age of 10 years, who had involvement of three or more vertebral bodies and had lesions between C7 to L1. A severe kyphosis is more than a cosmetic disfigurement because nearly all such patients develop cardiopulmonary dysfunction, painful impingement between ribs and pelvis and compression of the spinal cord with paraplegia at an average of 10 years after the onset of the disease. Correction of the established deformity is difficult and dangero
