The increasing knowledge on bone calcification processes has revealed some similarities with vascular tissue, where calcifications of arteries and cardiac valves contribute to several cardiovascular problems, such as heart failure, systolic hypertension, and myocardial and peripheral ischemic disease. Bisphosphonates have been used extensively for over two decades for the treatment of diseases associated with excessive bone resorption, i.e., osteoporosis, osteolytic bone metastasis, hypercalcemia and Paget's disease, by blocking osteoclastic function. Etidronate, pamidronate and clodronate has

Data from histopathology studies of human atherosclerotic tissue specimens and from vascular imaging studies support the concept that the local arterial microenvironment of a stable atheroma promotes destabilizing conditions that result in the transition to an unstable atheroma. Destabilization is characterized by several different plaque phenotypes that cause major clinical events such as acute coronary syndrome and cerebrovascular strokes. There are several rupture-associated phenotypes causing thrombotic vascular occlusion including simple fibrous cap rupture of an atheroma, fibrous cap rup

The understanding of vascular calcification-based mechanism is an urgent pending task in vascular biology and this prompted us to better address this issue by investigating whether DNA methylation mechanism might drive osteogenic marker genes modulation in primary human vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) responding to calcium and phosphate levels overload up to 72 h. Firstly, our data shows this calcifying process recapitulates the molecular repertory of osteogenic biomarkers and specifically requiring RUNX2, Osterix and ALP, BSP genes activations along 72 h in vitro, and this behavior was v…

BACKGROUND: Whether sonography is an appropriate imaging modality for cervical lymph nodes in patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) remains unclear. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of ultrasonography (US) features for lymph node metastasis in PTMC.
METHODS: Seven hundred twelve patients with PTMC who underwent conventional ultrasonography examinations of the cervical lymph nodes were included. All included cases underwent total thyroidectomy plus prophylactic central lymph node dissection. The included lymph nodes were marked superficially, and the cor

PURPOSE: Soft tissue calcification is a pathological condition. Matrix Gla (MGP) is a potent mineralization inhibitor secreted by cartilage chondrocytes and arteries' vascular smooth muscle cells. Mgp knock-out mice die at 6 weeks due to massive arterial calcification. Arterial calcification results in arterial stiffness and higher systolic blood pressure. Intriguingly, MGP was highly abundant in trabecular meshwork (TM). Because tissue stiffness is relevant to glaucoma, we investigated which additional eye tissues use Mgp's function using knock-in mice.
METHODS: An Mgp-Cre-recombinase coding

Symptomatic calcifications of the rotator cuff tendons is well-known pathologic condition. However, pathologic calcifications may involve other structures of the locomotor system as well. We report about five patients (age 52-66 years) with a painful calcification at the proximal part of the medial collateral ligament of the knee joint. All five patients presented with load-dependent pain pretending meniscus symptoms, but manual valgus stress provoked severe pain at the medial side of the knee. Conventional X-ray examination showed a dense rounded deposit at the proximal part of the medial col

BACKGROUND: Circumferential calcification of the ascending aorta, known as porcelain aorta, in a patient candidate to a heart transplant, requires technically demanding and high-risk procedural adjustments.
AIMS: This case report showed successful replacement of ascending aorta due to extensive calcification at time of heart transplantation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the operating theatre, after median sternotomy, cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) was achieved via the right femoral artery and vein. Due to the impossibility of replacing the ascending aorta using safe aortic cross-clamping, a moder

INTRODUCTION: The management of acute proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint fracture-dislocation by dynamic external fixator is widely practiced method. The complications such as pin loosening or non-union or stiffness are known and can be treated well. The over distraction causing vascular compromise and calcification of volar plate jeopardizing the function and viability of the affected digit is not reported so far.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of 2 weeks post-traumatic ring finger PIP joint fracture-dislocation in a 21-year-old male which was treated by pins and rubber dynamic traction met

To our knowledge, no study has investigated the association of long-term exposure to traffic pollution with markers of atherosclerosis in 4 vascular beds simultaneously in an all-African-American cohort. Among participants in the Jackson Heart Study (Jackson, Mississippi; baseline mean age = 55.5 (standard deviation, 12.7) years), we used linear regression to estimate percent differences in carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) at baseline (2004) and used modified Poisson regression (robust error variance) to estimate prevalence ratios for peripheral artery disease (PAD), coronary artery calci

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem condition which may affect a number of organs and, within the cardiopulmonary system, most commonly manifests as parenchymal, airway-centred, nodal, vascular or cardiac disease. Pleural involvement is rare, but well described, and often presents as pleural effusions or pleural thickening. Here, we present the first case of active sarcoidosis manifesting as bilateral pleural calcification. We highlight the importance of a nuanced understanding of pulmonary physiology when dissecting coexistent extrathoracic and intrathoracic pulmonary restriction. We demonstrate the

Introduction: The autologous pericardium, treated or fresh, is used in reconstructive cardiovascular surgery. We aimed to describe the features of fresh pericardium utilized in right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) reconstruction, years after the initial surgery. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 72 patients (65.3% male, mean age =18.68 ± 9.63 y) with a history of RVOT reconstruction with the fresh autologous pericardium who underwent reoperation. During the surgery, a 1 × 1 cm sample was cut from the previous pericardial patch, and hematoxylin and eosin (H & E), Masson's t

Several studies have demonstrated that excess of vitamin D3 is toxic particularly to vascular tissues. A notable pathological feature is arterial calcification. The nature of the toxic metabolite in hypervitaminosis D and the pathogenesis of arterial calcification are not clearly understood. The present study was undertaken to explore whether arterial calcification is a sequel of increased calcium uptake by arterial smooth muscle mediated by up regulation of vitamin D receptor in the cells in response to elevated circulating levels of vitamin D3 in serum. The experimental study was performed i

Great progress has been made in the field of vascular tissue engineering, with some artificial vascular grafts already exhibiting promising outcomes in animal models. However, these studies were mostly conducted using healthy animals, which are not representative of actual clinical demands. Indeed, patients who require artificial vascular graft implantation are often accompanied by other comorbidities, such as hyperlipidaemia, hypertension and diabetes which should also be taken into consideration when assessing the potential of vascular grafts that are intended for clinical applications. In t

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility, safety and short-term outcomes of transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TF-TAVI) in patients with small diseased peripheral vessels.
BACKGROUND: The transfemoral (TF) route for transcatheter aortic valve (TAVI) is the default option due to associated advantages. However, this is limited due to the high prevalence of significant peripheral arterial disease and increased risk of vascular complications.
METHODS: Of 539 consecutive patients undergoing TAVI in a single Italian center, 23 patients underwent TF-TAVI in

Cardiorenal syndrome is a condition where is a bidirectional and mutually detrimental relationship between the heart and kidneys. The mechanisms underlying cardiorenal syndrome are multifactorial and complex. Patients with kidney disease exhibit increased cardiovascular risk, presenting as coronary and peripheral artery disease, structural heart disease, arrhythmias, heart failure, and sudden cardiac death, largely occurring because of a systemic proinflammatory state, causing myocardial and vascular remodeling, manifesting as atherosclerotic lesions, vascular and valvular calcification, and m
