Vestibular neuritis: Involvement and long-term recovery of individual semicircular canals.

OBJECTIVE: In this retrospective study, the aim of the authors was to examine the frequency of involvement of the individual semicircular canals (SCCs) in vestibular neuritis (VN) and to assess the degree of long-term recovery. A secondary aim was to retrospectively determine the usefulness of a three-step bedside oculomotor test (the HINTS-test) for the differential diagnosis of peripheral VN. METHODS: 44 cases were evaluated during the acute phase and approximately two months later. The gain of the vestibuloocular reflex was determined using video-head-impulse test, carried out using Otomet

Vestibular evoked myogenic potential in vestibular neuritis.

This study wants to show the diagnostic value of vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) in the diagnosis of vestibular neuritis (VN), independently of the caloric test results. Twenty patients were enrolled with acute vertigo caused by VN. VEMP was tested with the binaural simultaneous stimulation method. Surface electromyographic activity was recorded in the supine patients from symmetrical sites over the upper half of each sternocleidomastoid muscle, with a reference electrode on the lateral end of the upper sternum. During the acute attack, 8 days, 1 month and 3 months after the beginn

Central distribution of octavolateral afferents and efferents in a teleost (Mormyridae).

The central distribution of afferents from individual eight nerve branches (N VIII) and mechanical lateral line end organs in mormyrid fish are described. Afferents were labeled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) placed on the cut ends of the different N VIII branches and the anterior and posterior lateral line nerves. Descending, tangential, and magnocellular nuclei receive input almost exclusively from the utriculus and canals. Nucleus octavius receives afferents from the lateral line nerves and all N VIII branches, with one part receiving exclusive and bilateral input from the sacculus. Affe

Epigenome and transcriptome changes in KMT2D-related Kabuki syndrome Type 1 iPSCs, neuronal progenitors and cortical neurons.

Kabuki syndrome type 1 (KS1) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by loss-of-function variants in KMT2D which encodes a H3K4 methyltransferase. The mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental problems in KS1 are still largely unknown. Here, we track the epigenome and transcriptome across three stages of neuronal differentiation using patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to gain insights into the disease mechanism of KS1. In KS1 iPSCs we detected significantly lower levels of functional KMT2D transcript and KMT2D protein, and lower global H3K4me1, H3K4me2 levels and modest red

Power spectra prognostic aspects of impulsive eye movement traces in superior vestibular neuritis.

Since usefulness of power spectra (PS) analysis was demonstrated in many fields of electrophysiology, the aims of the present study were to evaluate differences in frequency domain values of eye velocity traces between a group of 60 healthy subjects (HC) and 35 matched superior vestibular neuritis (VN) patients and to determine prognostic aspects of such values in terms of superior VN recovery. PS calculated on video head impulse test traces was compared between HC and during the acute stage of vertigo (T1) and after 3 months (T2) in superior VN patients. A multiple regression and desirability

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo secondary to vestibular neuritis.

The aim of this study was to present the demographic, pathogenetic and clinical features of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) secondary to vestibular neuritis (VN). The medical records of 22 patients, who presented with BPPV within 12 weeks after the onset of VN, were reviewed. Data of a complete otolaryngological, audiological, neurotologic and imaging evaluation were available for all patients. Two hundred and eighty-four patients with idiopathic BPPV were used as a control group. The patients with BPPV secondary to VN presented the following features, in which they differed from t

Functional development and regeneration of hair cells in the zebrafish lateral line.

KEY POINTS: We investigated hair-cell regeneration in the zebrafish lateral line following the application of the ototoxic compound copper. In early-larval zebrafish (<10 days post-fertilisation), regenerated hair cells drive action potentials (APs) in the afferent neurons 24 h post-copper treatment (24 hpt). Full regeneration of the early-larval neuromasts, the organs containing the hair cells, requires ∼48 h due to the progressive addition of hair cells and synaptic refinement. In older larval zebrafish, regenerated hair cells are active and drive afferent APs by 48 hpt, which is comparable

The dystonias.

Both the pharmacological and pathological data suggest that the dystonias may be a group of disorders with multiple etiologies. Knowledge in this field would be immeasurably advanced if a genetic linkage or a consistent regional or chemical brain pathology could be identified for any single subtype. Both kinds of advance are required before the specific etiology can be identified. The problem in trying to identify disturbances in a disease where no obvious neuronal degeneration can be found is rendered extremely complex by the large numbers of chemically distinct, but functionally interrelated

Accumulation of amyloid precursor protein-like immunoreactivity in rat brain in response to thiamine deficiency.

Thiamine deficiency (TD) is a classical model of impaired cerebral oxidation. As in Alzheimer's disease (AD), TD is characterized by selective neuronal loss, decreased activities of thiamine pyrophosphate-dependent enzymes, cholinergic deficits and memory loss. Amyloid beta-protein (A beta), a approximately 4 kDa fragment of the beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP), accumulates in the brains of patients with AD or Down's syndrome. In the current study, we examined APP and A beta immunoreactivity in the brains of thiamine-deficient rats. Animals received thiamine-deficient diet ad libitum and d

Visual influences on the development and recovery of the vestibuloocular reflex in the chicken.

Whenever the head turns, the vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) produces compensatory eye movements to help stabilize the image of the visual world on the retina. Uncompensated slip of the visual world across the retina results in a gradual change in VOR gain to minimize the image motion. VOR gain changes naturally during normal development and during recovery from neuronal damage. We ask here whether visual slip is necessary for the development of the chicken VOR (as in other species) and whether it is required for the recovery of the VOR after hair cell loss and regeneration. In the first experime

Activation of the thalamic parafascicular nucleus by electrical stimulation of the peripheral vestibular nerve in rats.

The parafascicular nucleus (PFN) of the thalamus is a primary structure in the feedback circuit of the basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical system, as well as in the neural circuit of the vestibulo-thalamo-striatal pathway. We investigated the characteristics of the functional connectivity between the peripheral vestibular system and the PFN in rats. A single electrical stimulation was applied to the horizontal semicircular canal nerve in the peripheral vestibular end-organs. This resulted in polysynaptic local field potentials (LFPs) in the PFN, which were composed of long-lasting multiple waves. T

Structural brain changes following peripheral vestibulo-cochlear lesion may indicate multisensory compensation.

BACKGROUND: Do central mechanisms account for the variability of clinical recovery following peripheral vestibulo-cochlear lesions? OBJECTIVE: To investigate structural (morphological) plasticity in the human brain following unilateral vestibulo-cochlear lesions which might contribute to central vestibular compensation. METHODS: The authors compared regional grey matter volume (GMV) changes in patients after surgical removal of unilateral acoustic neuroma with age-matched control subjects, and hypothesised morphometric changes in the vestibular and auditory cortices which may be related to f

Dynamic visual acuity during head-thrust test in canal planes in healthy subjects and patients with vestibular neuritis.

CONCLUSIONS: Dynamic visual acuity (DVA) during the head-thrust test (htDVA) is reliable in normal subjects, having a high specificity for the horizontal canal, so it may be useful to monitor vestibular rehabilitation in patients with vestibular neuritis (VN). OBJECTIVE: To obtain reference values for htDVA in healthy individuals and to investigate the potential application in subjects with unilateral VN. METHODS: A total of 73 healthy individuals and 50 patients with unilateral VN were included. The DVA test was performed by adjusting a sensor on the subject's head to measure head velocity.

[Diagnostic value of color-coded Doppler sonography in neuro-otologic disorders].

PURPOSE: The successful introduction of Doppler and Color-Coded Doppler Sonography (CCDS) in the field of Otorhinolaryngology has improved the diagnostic sonographic value for several diseases of the head and neck region, e. g. in hemangiomas and vascular malformations. The diagnostic value of CCDS for examination of the extracranial brain supplying vessels in combination with neuro-otologic disorders is still under controversial discussion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated the diagnostic CCDS findings for 215 patients suffering from different neuro-otologic disorders. All patients were

[Thrombosis of the basilar artery--a rare differential sudden deafness diagnosis and vestibular failure].

BACKGROUND: Occlusion of basilar artery is a rare and life-threatening event. A quick and safe diagnosis and initiation of adequate therapy are decisive. For the ENT-specialist it is important to know that this thrombosis, which runs a lethal course in many cases, can develop with a disturbance of hearing and/or vestibular function as initial symptoms. PATIENTS: Reported are four cases of thrombosis of the basilar or vertebral artery. Two out of four patients contacted the ENT emergency unit because of symptoms of acute vestibular neuritis, one patient was previously diagnosed with sudden dea
