Guidelines for the primary prevention of stroke: a guideline for healthcare professionals from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This guideline provides an overview of the evidence on established and emerging risk factors for stroke to provide evidence-based recommendations for the reduction of risk of a first stroke. METHODS: Writing group members were nominated by the committee chair on the basis of their previous work in relevant topic areas and were approved by the American Heart Association (AHA) Stroke Council Scientific Statement Oversight Committee and the AHA Manuscript Oversight Committee. The writing group used systematic literature reviews (covering the time since the last review was…

Let's emerge from the pandemic lockdown into a fairer academic world.

At the beginning of the pandemic, as universities were shutting, a meme did the rounds on social media. Some academics suggested that they were looking forward to increased productivity in grant and paper writing under lockdown. They cited the fact that Isaac Newton came up with his theory of gravity whilst quarantined during the bubonic plague. Globally, the reaction from many was to inwardly - or publicly - scream.

A selective agraphia of Kana.

We report a patient who developed selective Kana (phonogram) agraphia following an infarct in the left middle frontal gyrus known as Exner's area. He had well-preserved ability for comprehension, reading, and writing Kanji (ideogram). Kana errors consisted of substitution with another letter while the number of target words was well preserved. It is suggested that a dominant middle frontal gyrus lesion can result in agraphia.

[Role of varicocele in male sterility].

After they had analysed 50 cases of varicocoele the authors decided to put in writing some of their ideas. They conclude that varicocoele is often sub-clinical, localised to the right side, bilateral only in a number of cases. Although neither the sperm count nor the histology of the testes show specific pathological features, treatment of the condition brings worthwhile rewards. About 40% of patients father pregnancies.

Language skills of adults with dyslexia in English as a foreign language: proposal of a language spontaneity deficit hypothesis.

Developmental dyslexia is characterized by reading and writing deficits that persist into adulthood. However, the mechanisms underlying these deficits appear to affect several language domains negatively. The present study aims to investigate how 18 native Spanish-speaking adults with developmental dyslexia perform different language tasks in English as a foreign language. For this purpose, reading and oral comprehension were performed along with written and oral production tasks by adults with dyslexia and their control peers. The results suggest that Spanish adults with dyslexia need more ti…

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Apraxia of speech (AOS) is a motor speech disorder characterized by sound distortions, substitutions, deletions … ontrols. However, no study to date has investigated if there are differences in quantity (amount of writing) and quality (grammaticality) in the written language production between PPAOS and AOS+PAA patients, which was the aim of this study. METHODS: Twenty-four AOS+PAA patients, 24 PPAOS patients, and 24 typical controls performed the Western Aphasia Ba …

Genetic simulation for high-stakes conversations.

BACKGROUND: High-stakes conversations are frequent in Medical Genetics. News shared is often perceived as "bad" and can lead to patient hostility. Breaking bad news (BBN) is therefore a challenging clinical task for physicians and is often included as a foundational skill in medical education. The methods of teaching this skill are variable, with no widely accepted standard. We propose the use of simulation as a safe and effective training tool. APPROACH: Medical Genetics residents participated in a 4-week curriculum on BBN and de-escalating patient hostility and anger. The curriculum consist

Psychosis, creativity and recovery: exploring the relationship in a patient.

Relation between mental illness and creativity is intricate. While many creative people show signs of mental illness, persons with severe mental illness occasionally have creative output beyond the ordinary. We are presenting a patient with psychotic illness whose creative potential took a positive turn during the illness phase and grew further following symptomatic improvement and helped in her recovery process. Observing the contrast related to creative productivity pre and post psychotic phase raises the probability of whether psychotic illness or process might enhance creative potential. T

Relative Ease in Creating Detailed Orthographic Representations Contrasted with Severe Difficulties to Maintain Them in Long-term Memory Among Dyslexic Children.

Most research into orthographic learning abilities has been conducted in English with typically developing children using reading-based tasks. In the present study, we examined the abilities of French-speaking children with dyslexia to create novel orthographic representations for subsequent use in spelling and to maintain them in long-term memory. Their performance was compared with that of chronological age (CA)-matched and reading age (RA)-matched control children. We used an experimental task designed to provide optimal learning conditions (i.e. 10 spelling practice trials) ensuring the sh

Spelling errors in text copying by children with dyslexia and ADHD symptoms.

Spelling errors are usually studied in dictations, but teachers report that children with school difficulties often make spelling mistakes when they copy a text too. The present study examines the performance on a text copying task and a text dictation task of two groups of children known for their difficulties in spelling, that is, 22 with symptoms of ADHD and 13 with dyslexia, comparing them with matched controls to see whether children with spelling difficulties make more copying task errors than do controls, whether they make fewer mistakes when copying than when writing under dictation, a…

School-age follow-up of children with childhood apraxia of speech.

PURPOSE: The primary aim of this study was to examine differences in speech/language and written language skills between children with suspected childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) and children with other speech-sound disorders at school age. METHOD: Ten children (7 males and 3 females) who were clinically diagnosed with CAS (CAS group) were followed from the preschool years (ages 4-6) to school age (ages 8-10) and were compared with children with isolated speech-sound disorders (S group; n = 15) and combined speech-sound and language disorders (SL group; n = 14). Assessments included measures

Using graphic organizers to attain relational knowledge from expository text.

Many students with learning disabilities (LD) experience difficulties with extracting relationships from expository text, especially if they are implicit. Results from studies with K-12 participants have been inconclusive regarding the potency of the graphic organizer (GO) as a comprehension tool. This study attempted to address some of the concerns with GO research by examining the effects of using GOs with middle school students with LD to convey and cue relational knowledge, using a longer intervention and using written essays to assess the students' attainment of relational knowledge. The

[Severe amblyopia and Alzheimer' disease].

A 69-year-old woman developed a rapid and severe visual loss and became nearly blind in a few weeks. As she also presented with memory loss and other disturbances of cognitive functions, with progressive deterioration over one year, a probable Alzheimer's disease was diagnosed. Cerebral CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging were normal. However, clinical and electrophysiological (visual evoked potentials) data indicated an impairment of the primary visual pathways rather than a degeneration of the secondary visual cortex. This case is compared with and discussed in relation to recent reports

[Selective visual attention and continuous attention in dyslexic children. An experimental study].

Selective and sustained visual attention were tested in 29 boys with developmental dyslexia and 28 normal spellers (also boys) matched for age, grade in school, I.Q. and other developmental parameters. The developmental dyslexia group had deficits in selective attention. A significant effect of task difficulty was found. There was no dysfunction in sustained attention.

[Embryology and anatomy of the thorax and breast].

Embryology and anatomy of the chest wall and breast will be developed in this chapter. The walls of the thorax will be described; the anatomical notions of thoracic deformities will be detailed. The anatomy of the mammary gland will be developed around the understanding of the means of fixity and vascularization. The anatomical descriptions come from the writings of ancient anatomists, notably Testut and Latarjet, as well as the iconographies taken from their various works.
