Adipose tissue not only stores energy, but also controls metabolism through secretion of hormones, cytokines, proteins, and microRNAs that affect the function of cells and tissues throughout the body. Adipose tissue is organized into discrete depots throughout the body, and these depots are differentially associated with insulin resistance and increased risk of metabolic disease. In addition to energy-dissipating brown and beige adipocytes, recent lineage tracing studies have demonstrated that individual adipose depots are composed of white adipocytes that are derived from distinct precursor p

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a cancer type that causes a high rate of cancer death in the world. The standard therapy plan of intermediate and advanced stages of the HCC is transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). The treatment effectiveness is, however, limited because of the heterogeneity of tumors and the resistance to drugs. This paper shows that the HCC patients with TACE resistance alter their tumor immune homeostasis by reducing the secretion of exosomal miR-32-5p, which has a negative relationship with the population of CD68+ macrophages. Both in-cellular and animal studies show th

In the research setting, white adipose tissue (WAT) transplantation, also known as fat transplantation, is often used to understand the physiological function of adipocytes or associated stromal vascular cells such as macrophages in the context of local and systemic metabolism. The mouse is the most common animal model used where WAT from a donor is transferred either to a subcutaneous site of the same organism or to a subcutaneous region of a recipient. Here, we describe in detail the procedure for heterologous fat transplantation, and, given the need for survival surgery, peri- and postopera

Adipose tissue plays a crucial role in energy storage, but it also acts as an endocrine organ by secreting hormones and proinflammatory molecules. It regulates various processes, including adipogenesis, metabolism, and inflammation. White and brown adipose tissue (WAT and BAT) consists of white and brown adipocytes, respectively, which differ in cellular structure and function. Adipocytes also make up a significant part of perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT), which forms a sheath-like structure around blood vessels. Current research indicates that WAT, BAT, and PVAT are negatively affected by e

Cancer cachexia occurs in a majority of advanced cancer patients. These patients with impaired physical function are unable to tolerance cancer treatment well and have a significantly reduced survival rate. Currently, there is no effective clinical treatment available for cancer cachexia, therefore, it is necessary to clarify the molecular mechanisms of cancer cachexia, moreover, new therapeutic targets for cancer cachexia treatment are urgently needed. Very recent studies suggest that, during cancer cachexia, white adipose tissue undergo a 'browning' process, resulting in increased lipid mobi

White adipose tissue (WAT) plays an important role in the integration of whole-body metabolism by storing fat and mobilizing triacylglycerol when needed. The released free fatty acids can then be oxidized by other tissues to provide ATP. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a key regulator of metabolic pathways, and can be targeted by a new generation of direct, small-molecule activators. AMPK activation in WAT inhibits insulin-stimulated lipogenesis and in some situations also inhibits insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, but AMPK-induced inhibition of β-adrenergic agonist-stimulated lipolysi

Plasmalogen, a phospholipid, exhibits preventive and therapeutic effects on dementia. Phospholipids improve fat metabolism, but it is unknown whether plasmalogen has an effect on fat metabolism. In this study, the effects of plasmalogen were determined by administering plasmalogen to KK-Ay mice. As a result, weight gain was significantly suppressed in the plasmalogen-treated group compared with the control group from 7 wk after the start of administration. In addition, plasmalogen administration increased uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) expression in brown adipose tissue. The effect is thought to

BACKGROUND: Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a prevalent chronic liver condition globally, currently lacking universally recognized therapeutic drugs, thereby increasing the risk of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Research has reported an association between white adipose tissue and MAFLD.
SCOPE OF REVIEW: White adipose tissue (WAT) is involved in lipid metabolism and can contribute to the progression of MAFLD by mediating insulin resistance, inflammation, exosomes, autophagy, and other processes. This review aims to elucidate the mechanisms through which WAT plays

INTRODUCTION: Adipocyte size and body fat distribution are strongly linked to the metabolic complications of obesity. The aim of the present study was to test the plasticity of white adipose tissue in response to insulin deprivation and replacement. We have characterized the changes of adipose cell size repartition and gene expressions in type 1 diabetes Sprague-Dawley rats and type 1 diabetic supplemented with insulin.
METHODS: Using streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes, we induced rapid changes in rat adipose tissue weights to study the changes in the distribution of adipose cell sizes in

OBJECTIVE: To review experience with open surgery for paediatric urolithiasis during a 10-year period.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The hospital records of patients up to 13 years old and treated between 1990 and 2000 for stones were reviewed; there were 310 patients (98 girls and 212 boys, aged 9 months to 13 years, mean 6.8 years).
RESULTS: The commonest symptoms were renal-ureteric colic (26.7%), gross haematuria (19%), urinary retention (16.7%), and abdominal and/or flank pain (13.2%). Because of poverty and the resultant inability to pay medical fees, 19 children presented very late with pyone

Decidual protein induced by progesterone (DEPP) was originally identified as a modulator in the process of decidualization in the endometrium. Here, we define that DEPP is involved in adipose tissue thermogenesis, which contributes to metabolic regulation. Knockdown of DEPP suppressed adipocyte differentiation and lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells, induced expression of brown adipose tissue (BAT) markers in primary brown adipocyte and induced mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) differentiation to brown adipocytes. Moreover, DEPP deficiency in mice induced white adipocyte browning and enhanced

White adipose tissue (WAT) browning is a potential strategy to treat obesity, and is characterized by the formation of brown adipocytes induced by cold or β-3 adrenergic receptor (β-3AR) agonist treatment. The hedgehog (Hh) signaling at the primary cilium is closely related to obesity, and plays a key role in the differentiation and adipogenesis of adipocytes. However, little is known about its effects on WAT browning. In this study, browning models were used to evaluate the activity and effect of Hh signaling on WAT browning using Hh antagonists, agonist, and small-interfering RNAs (siRNAs) s

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) constitute a class of short noncoding RNAs which regulate gene expression by targeting messenger RNA, inducing translational repression and messenger RNA degradation. This regulation of gene expression by miRNAs in adipose tissue (AT) can impact on the regulation of metabolism and energy homeostasis, particularly considering the different types of adipocytes which exist in mammals, i.e., white adipocytes (white AT; WAT), brown adipocytes (brown AT; BAT), and inducible brown adipocytes in WAT (beige or brite or brown-in-white adipocytes). Indeed, an increasing number of miRNA

Prep1 is a gene encoding for a homeodomain transcription factor which induces hepatic and muscular insulin resistance. In this study, we show that Prep1 hypomorphic heterozygous (Prep1i/+) mice, expressing low levels of protein, featured a 23% and a 25% reduction of total body lipid content and epididymal fat, respectively. The percentage of the small adipocytes (25-75 μm) was 30% higher in Prep1i/+ animals than in the WT, with a reciprocal difference in the large adipose cells (100-150 and >150 μm). Insulin-stimulated insulin receptor tyrosine and Akt serine phosphorylation markedly increased

We analyzed the effects of castration on epididymal white adipose tissue (WAT) in C57BL/6J mice which were fed a regular or high-fat diet. Fourteen days following surgical castration profound effects on WAT tissue such as reductions in WAT wet weight and WAT/body weight ratio, induction of lipolysis and morphologic changes characterized by smaller adipocytes, and increased stromal cell compartment were documented in both dietary groups. Castrated animals had decreased serum leptin levels independent of diet but diet-dependent decreases in serum adiponectin and resistin. The castrated high-fat

The angiotensin II (ANG II)-ANG II type 1 receptor (AT1R) axis is a key player in the pathophysiology of obesity. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) counteracts the ANG II/AT1R axis via converting ANG II to angiotensin 1-7 (Ang 1-7), which is known to have an anti-obesity effect. In this study, we hypothesized that ACE2 exerts a strong anti-obesity effect by increasing Ang 1-7 levels. We injected intraperitoneally recombinant human ACE2 (rhACE2, 2.0 mg·kg-1·day-1) for 28 days to high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity mice. rhACE2 treatment decreased body weight and improved glucose metabolism

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) alters microRNA (miRNA) expression in key metabolic tissues. The effects of different exercise modalities on miRNA expression in white adipose tissue (WAT) of the T1DM rat model remain largely unexplored.
AIM: This exploratory preclinical study investigated the effects of eight weeks of moderate-intensity endurance training (MIET) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on the expression of miR-29a and miR-126 in the WAT of the T1DM rat model.
METHODS: Fifty-four male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to six groups (n = 7 in healthy and n = 11

The effects of bile acids (BAs) on liver, enteroendocrine function, small intestine, and brown adipose tissue have been described extensively. Outside the liver, BAs in the peripheral circulation system represent a specific but underappreciated physiological compartment. We discuss how systemic BAs can be regarded as specific steroidal hormones that act on white adipocytes, and suggest the name 'bilokines' ('bile hormones') for the specific FXR/TGR5 receptor interaction in adipocytes. Some BAs and their agonists regulate adipocyte differentiation, lipid accumulation, hypoxia, autophagy, adipok
