Angiomatous developmental changes are the therapeutic object of attention as regards elective interventions in particular in plastic surgery. Their complications in some body cavities, in particular haemorrhage or compression of organs, are usually dealt with by general surgeons and occasionally by vascular surgeons. Diseases of the central nervous system are the domain of neurosurgeons. After a general analysis of the problem of angiodysplasia, the author discusses three successfully operated patients with angiodysplasia of the stomach, spleen and small intestine which were manifested in two

Four patients with chronic gastrointestinal blood loss of obscure aetiology were investigated by visceral angiography. All showed angiographic abnormalities in the caecum with characteristic features seen in angiodysplasia as well as other conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, carcinoma. All four patients had a malignant cause for their angiographic appearance. This paper stresses the importance of reviewing previous examinations before accepting a diagnosis of angiodysplasia. The angiographic features of contrast pooling on the anti-mesenteric border of the caecum or ascending colon,

Intestinal angiodysplastic lesions represent one frequent source of gastro-enteric tract serious bleedings, endowed with present-day therapeutic implications. The Authors report a singular case of a bleeding of this kind. A selective arteriography analysis of the superior mesenteric artery immediately pointed out the necessity for a surgical intervention, which however has not proved being resolutive for recovery, because massive intestinal hemmorrhage recurrence occurred. The left gastric artery anomalous origin, being discovered in the first branch of the mesenteric artery, which was not rec

Angiodysplasia of the gastrointestinal tract is common in the population 60 years of age and older and may be the cause of acute and/or chronic bleeding. Colonic angiodysplastic lesions are presumed to be degenerative in nature, secondary to either intermittent obstruction of the submucosal veins or hypoxemia. The pathogenesis of upper intestinal angiodysplasia is most likely related to a degenerative process. The clinical presentation varies from an incidental finding in an otherwise asymptomatic person to occult bleeding or an acute massive hemorrhage. Endoscopy and angiography are useful di

A case of a three year old child with an angiodysplasia (arterial venous malformation) localized in the sigmoidal rectum is reported. The malformation caused chronic recurrent rectal hemorrhaging. Colonoscopy was the procedure used to diagnose the problem which was later corroborated by arteriography. The affected area was removed.

We report a female infant who presented at birth with an unusual syndrome of disseminated cutaneous and gastrointestinal vascular malformations associated with severe thrombocytopenia and chronic gastrointestinal hemorrhage. The infant required extensive blood-product support and expired at 7 months of age. Postmortem examination confirmed the presence of numerous flat vascular lesions, descriptively classified as angiodysplastic, and composed of congeries of dilated capillaries, arterioles, and postcapillary venules. No visceral space-occupying hemangiomas were found. The case is discussed in

Ascending colon angiodysplasia is a cause of colorrhagia, particularly if the patients are more than 55 years old. Therapy is primarily surgical and it consists generally in right hemicolectomy. Two cases personally observed are reported and a survey of the literature is made.

We studied 14 large bowel resections from patients with a provisional clinical diagnosis of a bleeding vascular lesion of the colon. For the purpose of this study we developed a barium-gelatine vascular injection technique. Six of the 14 cases were proven to be angiodysplasias with an identifiable mucosal vascular ectasia. The pathological findings in these six cases are described. We conclude that angiodysplasia represent a significant cause of lower gastrointestinal haemorrhage in the elderly. It is our opinion that only the mucosa vascular ectasia seen in these cases is histologically diagn

The authors present a case review of a congenital abnormality of the inferior mesenteric blood vessels which resulted in ischemia of the descending colon and rectosigmoid area. The resulting colitis is only very rarely secondary to a vascular congenital abnormality. In this case, rectosigmoidoscopy, barioum study of the large bowel and a biopsy of the rectal mucosa pointed towards the ischemic nature of the lesion. This led to the selective angiographic study of the inferior mesenteric vessels with findings of a dilated inferior mesenteric artery and angiodysplasia. Surgical treatment included

Angiodysplasia of the gastrointestinal tract is thought to be one of the most common causes of lower gastrointestinal bleeding in the elderly, and, in the majority of cases, lesions are located in the cecum or ascending colon. The authors report an extremely rare case of appendicular angiodysplasia. A 76-yr-old woman was hospitalized with massive recurrent red anal bleeding. Selective superior mesenteric arteriography revealed an extravasation of contrast material from the appendicular artery, and this finding proved to be bleeding from an angiodysplasia of the appendix. An appendectomy was pe

Renovascular hypertension is non essential hypertension, wherein anatomically evident arterial occlusive disease and increased blood pressures are related as cause and effect. The hypertension is due to renal ischemia. Angiodysplasia is an uncommon angiopathy associated with heterogeneous histological changes that may affect the carotid circulation and the visceral and peripheral arteries.

A case of congenital lingual angiodysplasia with macroglossia in a 5-year-old girl is presented. A diffusely enlarged tongue was present at birth and continued to grow as the child aged. It was accompanied by impaired speech, difficulty in eating and breathing, and sleep apnea, necessitating surgical intervention. The fundamental lesion represents a complex vascular malformation of the lymphangioma-hemangioma type, involving extensively the deep musculature of the tongue. Multifocal and multicentric cavernous lymphangioma-like and hemangioma-like areas merge with benign angioendotheliomatous-l

Angiodysplasia should be considered in the differential diagnosis of hematochezia, gastrointestinal bleeding of obscure origin, and chronic iron deficiency anemia. Although the current medical literature lacks well-designed studies of the various therapeutic modalities, several conclusions appear warranted. Diagnosis of the bleeding site during colonoscopy and the use of endoscopic hemostasis techniques (electrocautery or laser) controls bleeding and may prevent rebleeding. When rebleeding occurs, it may be from the previously treated site or a different location. Estrogen-progestin therapy ha

Angiodysplasia of the colon as a cause of lower intestinal bleeding is diagnosed frequently in the elderly, with defined clinical characteristics. In the pediatric population there is little experience; only six cases have been reported. The present study evaluates the clinical, radiological, and surgical aspects of nine children with angiodysplasia of the colon who were treated at the National Institute of Pediatrics in Mexico City between 1970 and 1993. The mean age of clinical onset was 2.3 years. In six patients, symptoms appeared before the first year of life. Lower intestinal bleeding an

Angiodysplasia is an important vascular lesion of the gut and a source of significant morbidity from bleeding. This lesion is probably responsible for approximately 6.0% of cases of lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding and 1.2-8.0% of cases of hemorrhage from the upper GI tract. Small bowel angiodysplasia accounts for 30-40% of cases of GI bleeding of obscure origin and represents the single most common cause for hemorrhage in this subset of patients. Lesions in the large bowel occur most often in the right colon. Their cause is unknown but most are probably acquired and the result of a degene
