Virtual anthropology.

Comparative morphology, dealing with the diversity of form and shape, and functional morphology, the study of the relationship between the structure and the function of an organism's parts, are both important subdisciplines in biological research. Virtual anthropology (VA) contributes to comparative morphology by taking advantage of technological innovations, and it also offers new opportunities for functional analyses. It exploits digital technologies and pools experts from different domains such as anthropology, primatology, medicine, paleontology, mathematics, statistics, computer science, …

Anthropology in public health emergencies: what is anthropology good for?

Recent outbreaks of Ebola virus disease (2013-2016) and Zika virus (2015-2016) bring renewed recognition of the need to understand social pathways of disease transmission and barriers to care. Social scientists, anthropologists in particular, have been recognised as important players in disease outbreak response because of their ability to assess social, economic and political factors in local contexts. However, in emergency public health response, as with any interdisciplinary setting, different professions may disagree over methods, ethics and the nature of evidence itself. A disease outbrea

Othodontic aspects of dental anthropology.

Variation in the size, shape, number, arrangement, and wear pattern of the teeth of man has long been an area of great interest to physical anthropologists. In this paper some of the remarkable variations to be found in the human dentition are identified and translated in orthodontic terms. Teeth are by nature imperfect structures, often just as disfigured individually as the malocclusions they form collectively. It is important that the orthodontist cultivates an anthropologist's eye for tooth variations. With this sensitivity he shall surely enlarge his understanding of the limitations of or

Epidemiology, anthropology and health education.

Epidemiology gives only a partial picture of a health problem. Without a knowledge of social, cultural, and economic conditions as well, one can fall into farcical errors in designing interventions.

[Pitfalls of anthropological typology].

The essence of anthropological typology is to classify people as belonging to anthropological types according to predetermined sets of morphological traits. The authors of the concept claim that traits characteristic of a given type are monogenic and have a Mendelian inheritance pattern. According to these assumptions, it is possible to unambiguously determine hair or eye color, etc. on the basis of scull characteristics only. Such a solution could be of a great importance in identification based on the skeleton but for the fact that the concept contradicts the current body of knowledge of pop

Incorporating gender in the anthropology of infectious diseases.

The paper focuses on key issues in research and control of infectious diseases and demonstrates the utility of combining a gender perspective with anthropological investigation both for understanding disease and for designing and evaluating interventions for its control. Based on a definition of gender as opposed to sex, it illustrates, with the help of a gender framework for tropical diseases, how this concept is applied. It argues that gender-sensitive research is essential to the understanding of the nature of the disease, its prevalence, distribution, determinants and consequences. Example

Identification by frontal sinus pattern in forensic anthropology.

The authors report forensic cases from the literature, as well as two personal homicide cases, of identification through comparison of frontal sinus radiographs. A general discussion about identification using frontal sinus X-rays is presented, pointing out the reliability of the method, in reference to the uniqueness of the frontal sinus in humans, but also some difficulties, especially in reference to the distance, orientation and angle of the X-ray technique.

Global forensic anthropology in the 21st century.

While it has a long history, the last 30 years have brought considerable advances to the discipline of forensic anthropology worldwide. Every so often it is essential that these advances are noticed and trends assessed. It is also important to identify those research areas that are needed for the forthcoming years. The purpose of this special issue is to examine some of the examples of research that might identify the trends in the 21st century. Of the 14 papers 5 dealt with facial features and identification such as facial profile determination and skull-photo superimposition. Age (fetus and …

[Modern fertility technologies: challenges for psychosomatic anthropology].

In the present paper the topic is considered on the basis of homologous in-vitro fertilization, taking homologous test-tube fertilization as representative of other fertilization methods. The first part of the article considers a number of obvious forms of damage and symptoms, the second the simplified anthropology on which medical fertilization methods are based and the challenge--arising from this--to develop a new psychosomatic anthropology, crystallized in the paradigm of the advent of a child.

Anthropological perspectives on injections: a review.

Qualitative studies from developing countries have pointed to the widespread popularity of injections. In addition to their use by formal and informal providers and traditional healers, there is now increasing evidence of the use of injections and injection equipment by lay people. Epidemiological research links the large number of unsafe injections to serious bloodborne infections such as viral hepatitis B and C and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The present article examines the reasons behind the demand for injections by consumers and the administration of unnecessary or unsafe i

[Anthropological aspects of skin color].

The highly variable spectrum of colors of human skin depends primarily on differences in the activity of the melanocytes and the melanin content, besides other pigments such as carotenoids. In case of a homogenous early-man-color, the following moments may be relevant for the genetic differentiation: primary factors (latitude, climate, radiation), secondary (vegetation, morbific agents) and tertiary (nutritional status, diseases) factors. They modify selection, resulting from population movement, adaptation to new habitats, and temporary isolation. Regarding the protective function of the inte

Example of digital exhibition in anthropology and medical education.

Technology brings new opportunities in terms of education and research, and global pandemics such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic require online education-style approaches. Visualisation is of great importance in digitised education. In this study, materials that are of interest to the disciplines of anthropology, dentistry and medicine were selected from the skeletal materials and presented in a virtual exhibition. The mandible samples were digitised by photogrammetric method, and the exhibition was made navigable by using the Unity game engine program. In the exhibition, information on denta…
