Gastric antiulcer, antisecretory and cytoprotective properties of celery (Apium graveolens) in rats.

In the present investigation, an ethanol extract of celery [Apium graveolens L. (Apiaceae/Umbelliferae)], at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight, was evaluated for antigastric ulcer activity using various experimental gastric ulcer models in rats. Ulcers were induced by indomethacin, cytodestructive agents (80% ethanol, 0.2 M NaOH and 25% NaCl) and cold restraint stress. Gastric secretory studies were undertaken by using pylorus ligation (Shay rat model). In addition to gastric wall mucus (GWM), non-protein sulfhydryl (NP-SH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were also estimated in gastric tissues

Systemic response to aphid infestation by Myzus persicae in the phloem of Apium graveolens.

Little is known about the molecular processes involved in the phloem response to aphid feeding. We investigated molecular responses to aphid feeding on celery (Apium graveolenscv. Dulce) plants infested with the aphid Myzus persicae, as a means of identifying changes in phloem function. We used celery as our model species as it is easy to separate the phloem from the surrounding tissues in the petioles of mature leaves of this species. We generated a total of 1187 expressed sequence tags (ESTs), corresponding to 891 non-redundant genes. We analysed these ESTs in silico after cDNA macroarray hy

Not as Bland as You May Think: Celery (Apium graveolens) Commonly Induces Phytophotodermatitis.

Often consumed for its nutritious benefits, celery (Apium graveolens) contains furocoumarins and psoralens that have photosensitizing properties and can induce phytophotodermatitis (PPD) when exposed to UV light. Clinical manifestations of PPD include an eruption of vesicles in sun-exposed areas. When consumed as part of a typical diet, the amount of furocoumarins in celery generally is insufficient to induce PPD; however, individuals who regularly handle celery or consume produce that is infected with fungus as well as those who use tanning beds are at increased risk for this painful reaction

Uptake and transpiration of solid and hollow SiO2 nanoparticles by terrestrial plant (Apium Graveolens var. secalinum).

Recent studies have raised concerns about the potential toxicity of amorphous silica (SiO2) nanoparticles (NPs). This investigation explores the uptake, transport, and transpiration of silica NPs in Apium graveolens var. secalinum. The study reveals that SiO2 NPs can infiltrate the plant cell wall, translocate from roots to stems and leaves, leading to elevated silicon levels and posing ingestion exposure risks. Furthermore, the release of these NPs through transpiration droplets (481 ± 205 mg·m-2day-1 for 10 nm SiO2 NPs and 367 ± 22 mg·m-2day-1for 20 nm SiO2 NPs) presents significant health a

Roots of Apium graveolens and Petroselinum crispum-Insight into Phenolic Status against Toxicity Level of Trace Elements.

Celery (Appium graveolens L.) and parsley (Petroselinum crispum (Mill.) Fuss) are herbs utilized in the everyday diet as spices and culinary flavorings, often used in the chemical and medicinal industries. Despite the knowing benefits of different plants from the Apiaceae family, their chemical composition is closely associated with various extrinsic factors. Environmental loading with trace elements (TEs) can modify a plant's metabolic pathways, change bioactive compounds production, cause plant pollution, and consequently provoke human health issues. Therefore, we established this research a
