Dynamic liquid association: complex learning without implausible guidance.

Simple associative networks have many desirable properties, but are fundamentally limited by their inability to accurately capture complex relationships. This paper presents a solution significantly extending the abilities of associative networks by using an untrained dynamic reservoir as an input filter. The untrained reservoir provides complex dynamic transformations, and temporal integration, and can be viewed as a complex non-linear feature detector from which the associative network can learn. Typically reservoir systems utilize trained single layer perceptrons to produce desired output r

Association between attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder and learning disorders.

This article discusses the relationship between attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning disability (LD). The relevant literature is outlined, and empirical data are presented from a prospective follow-up study of 600 speech/language-impaired children. The data show an increased prevalence of both LD and ADHD among children with early speech/language impairments. Furthermore, LD was strongly associated with ADHD in both the initial and follow-up samples. Also, the children with LD had increased rates of other psychiatric disorders (e.g., behavior disorders, mood disorders,

Motor sequence learning and learning to learn across the Alzheimer's disease continuum: Associations with biomarkers.

BackgroundWhile amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are primarily associated with cognitive impairments, motor dysfunction has also consistently been observed. Less is known, however, about the acquisition of new motor sequences along the AD continuum.ObjectiveThis study examined motor sequence learning in individuals with aMCI and AD dementia compared to cognitively normal individuals (CNI), and to what extent such learning is related to AD biomarkers.MethodsA total of 28 individuals with AD dementia, 33 with aMCI, and 52 CNI performed a computerized task th

The relationship between learning disability, intelligence, and paired-associate learning.

Learning disabled (N = 45) and non-learning disabled (N = 39) third and fourth grade boys and girls were compared in four paired-associate situations. The situations respectively measured learning, memory, exemplar learning, and transfer. Intelligence was measured with the WISC-R. The data were nonnormal in distribution, and the results were thus analyzed parametrically for intelligence and group. What appears to be an interaction occurred. Intelligence facilitated performance for normals on the memory task but had a deleterious effect for the learning disabled Ss. The learning disabled high i

Neuroimaging of Fear-Associated Learning.

Fear conditioning has been commonly used as a model of emotional learning in animals and, with the introduction of functional neuroimaging techniques, has proven useful in establishing the neurocircuitry of emotional learning in humans. Studies of fear acquisition suggest that regions such as amygdala, insula, anterior cingulate cortex, and hippocampus play an important role in acquisition of fear, whereas studies of fear extinction suggest that the amygdala is also crucial for safety learning. Extinction retention testing points to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex as an essential region in

Associative learning in flying phobia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Modern learning theories suggest that particularly strong associative learning contributes to the etiology and maintenance of anxiety disorders, thus explaining why some individuals develop an anxiety disorder after a frightening (conditioning) event, whereas others do not. However, associative learning has rarely been investigated experimentally in specific phobias. The current study investigated associative learning in patients with flying phobia and healthy controls using a modified version of Olson and Fazio's associative learning paradigm (Olson & Fazio, 2001).

Trends in brain MRI and CP association using deep learning.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder that dissipates body posture and impairs motor functions. It may lead to an intellectual disability and affect the quality of life. Early intervention is critical and challenging due to the uncooperative body movements of children, potential infant recovery, a lack of a single vision modality, and no specific contrast or slice-range selection and association. Early and timely CP identification and vulnerable brain MRI scan associations facilitate medications, supportive care, physical therapy, rehabilitation, and surgical interventions to alleviat

Genome-wide association study-based deep learning for survival prediction.

Informative and accurate survival prediction with individualized dynamic risk profiles over time is critical for personalized disease prevention and clinical management. The massive genetic data, such as SNPs from genome-wide association studies (GWAS), together with well-characterized time-to-event phenotypes provide unprecedented opportunities for developing effective survival prediction models. Recent advances in deep learning have made extraordinary achievements in establishing powerful prediction models in the biomedical field. However, the applications of deep learning approaches in surv

Functionally segregated neural substrates for arbitrary audiovisual paired-association learning.

To clarify the neural substrates and their dynamics during crossmodal association learning, we conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during audiovisual paired-association learning of delayed matching-to-sample tasks. Thirty subjects were involved in the study; 15 performed an audiovisual paired-association learning task, and the remainder completed a control visuo-visual task. Each trial consisted of the successive presentation of a pair of stimuli. Subjects were asked to identify predefined audiovisual or visuo-visual pairs by trial and error. Feedback for each trial was given

The role of associative learning in sensitization.

In Pavlovian sensitization, conditioned stimuli are said to activate response modes (e.g., feeding, sexual, or fear), which result in an increase in the response to other stimuli that activate the same response mode. Pavlovian sensitization effects are likely to result from any encounter with a highly arousing stimulus, leading to high translational relevance for investigations of anxiety disorders, cognition, and the neurobiology of learning.

Perceived learning outcomes partly mediate the association between interactive features and adolescent satisfaction in documentary-based digital learning.

INTRODUCTION: Digital platforms increasingly present adolescents with documentary-based educational content that combines audiovisual narratives with navigation, feedback, personalization, and social interaction. However, the association between perceived interactive features and post-use satisfaction, including the possible mediating role of perceived learning outcomes, remains unclear. Guided by Uses and Gratifications Theory and Social Cognitive Theory, this study proposed an Interactive Affordance-Cognition-Outcome framework and examined whether perceived learning outcomes statistically me

Enhanced drug-disease association prediction through representation learning on similarity networks.

Drug repositioning has emerged as a promising strategy for accelerating therapeutic discovery by identifying novel indications for existing drugs. Recent graph representation learning methods have shown encouraging performance for drug-disease association prediction; however, many existing approaches directly utilize heterogeneous drug-disease networks during representation learning, potentially introducing label leakage and limiting generalizability. In this study, we propose similarity network-based representation learning for drug repositioning (SimNetRLDR), a similarity network-based repre

Global transfer learning pipeline for protein disease association in Alzheimer's disease.

Researchers have prioritized the study of protein-disease associations to decode triggers of clinical pathology and isolate high-value targets for drug development. Comprehensive modeling of genetic network dynamics is equally vital for advancing our functional understanding of these disorders. In this study, we applied a hierarchical, transfer-learning framework to address the challenge of protein-disease association prediction, specifically targeting scenarios with limited labeled data for specific diseases. We used Alzheimer's disease as a case study to demonstrate the efficacy of our propo

MicroNucML enables machine learning-based micronuclei segmentation and micronuclei-nuclei association.

Micronuclei (MN) are structures containing small DNA fragments that arise from mitotic errors or failed DNA repair and serve as markers of genome instability. MN are typically quantified manually or with threshold methods, which can be tedious and inaccurate, leading to variable success and throughput. By employing a two-phase labeling approach that uses polygon and brush segmentation, along with SAM2-based refinement, we developed a high-quality MN segmentation tool. Data augmentation capturing heterogeneity in image quality and color diversity enabled us to train a generalizable Mask region-

Frontal association cortex is engaged in stimulus integration during associative learning.

The frontal association cortex (FrA) is implicated in higher brain function. Aberrant FrA activity is likely to be involved in dementia pathology. However, the functional circuits both within the FrA and with other regions are unclear. A recent study showed that inactivation of the FrA impairs memory consolidation of an auditory fear conditioning in young mice. In addition, dendritic spine remodeling of FrA neurons is sensitive to paired sensory stimuli that produce associative memory. These findings suggest that the FrA is engaged in neural processes critical to associative learning. Here we
