Athetosis is a peculiar involuntary movement resulting from pathologic involvement of the basal ganglia. Although mechanism of this movement is still far from established, athetosis is clinically differentiated from chorea and dystonia. The purpose of this article is to review and summarise the classification of this involuntary movement disorder. This movement disorder is classified into double athetosis, chorea-athetosis, unilateral athetosis and pseudo-athetosis. The double athetosis is featured by increased muscle tonus and irregular small amplitude movement, which appears the most frequen…

Two patients with movement disorders associated with syringomyelia are described, one of whom developed unusual torticollis, and the other had choreoathetoid-dystonic movements of the hand and arm. In each case, the movements resolved with decompression of the syrinx. The literature is reviewed and possible mechanisms explored.

A case of typhoid fever with neuropsychiatric features is described. These comprised confusion and delirium, meningism, a single major convulsion and bilateral athetoic movements. Athetosis has not previously been described in typhoid fever and must now be added to the long list of neuropsychiatric manifestations of this disease.

Two cases of severe thyrotoxicosis are described. They both exhibited choreo-athetoid movements which were abolished by successful treatment of the thyrotoxicosis. It is suggested that the tremor of mild thyrotoxicosis is one end of a spectrum at which choreo-athetosis is at the most severe end. A tentative explanation of this hypothesis is given in the discussion.

Disorders of movement after hemiplegia have been described for more than a century, but their pathological anatomy and physiology have remained poorly understood because of ambiguous terminology and incomplete studies. We examined the brains of 5 patients which had been serially sectioned where there had been well documented pure motor hemiplegia acquired in childhood. In 4 patients handicapped by hemiathetosis the main lesion was partial destruction of the caudate nucleus and putamen. In the fifth case, where non-disabling involuntary movements only appeared in later life, there was gliosis o…

The clinical symptoms in a 10-year-old girl with progressive dystonic cerebral palsy are described. The biochemical findings were dominated by large amounts of glutaric acid in the urine. The disorder is caused by impairment of the degradation of glutaryl-CoA. A survey is given of the clinical and biochemical symptoms, based on the five cases reported so far. It is concluded that patients with progressive dystonic palsy should be examined for disorders in the metabolism of organic acids.

"Athetosis," from the Greek athetos, meaning "without fixed position," is a movement disorder first described by Hammond in 1871. The term described slow, irregular continual movements of the distal extremities. In 1983, Foley defined the athetoid syndrome as "a nonprogressive but evolving disorder due to damage to the basal ganglia of the full-term brain … [with] impairment of postural reflexes, arrhythmical involuntary movements, and dysarthria, [but] sparing … sensation, ocular movements and … intelligence." A decade later, "athetoid syndrome" was replaced by "dyskinetic cerebral palsy." In…

Two patients with intractable epilepsy who had been treated with various combinations of anticonvulsant drugs developed phenytoin encephalopathy. In both patients choreo-athetoid involuntary movements were prominent. Blood phenytoin concentrations were above 30 mug/ml. When phenytoin was given in smaller doses and its level in the blood fell the involuntary movements and other clinical manifestations disappeared.

The Marchiafava-Bignami disease, characterized by demyelination and necrosis of the corpus callosum, has typically been associated with chronic alcohol intake, and clinically has various symptoms and signs. However, several cases have been reported without alcohol association, and these - according to several publications - have some common points, such as preference for female, related to malnutrition, and radiological involvement of the splenium of the corpus callosum. We report a case of a patient with the characteristics described above and whose clinical manifestation was Athetosis. The a…

We describe 8 patients who presented with continuous, irregular movements occurring independently in individual fingers and, in some cases, … e was no other evidence of a progressive neurological disease. We classify the movement disorder as athetosis as described by Hammond and Shaw and the syndrome as mild athetoid cerebral palsy.

An Indian man with Wernicke's encephalopathy had nystagmus, pupillary changes and confusion, but the unusual and prominent features in his presentation were marked dystonia and choreo-athetosis, which responded rapidly to thiamine. The possible pathogenesis is discussed.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether resting metabolic rate (RMR) is higher or lower in adults with cerebral palsy compared with the RMR of cont … alysis, RMR was best predicted in the entire sample by fat-free mass and the presence or absence of athetosis (multiple R = .83, P < .001). The presence of cerebral palsy alone was not significantly correlated with RMR.
CONCLUSIONS: The increased energy requirements of adults with cerebral palsy can be partially explained by athetotic movements. In this sa …
