A historical review of Babesia spp. associated with deer in Europe: Babesia divergens/Babesia divergens-like, Babesia capreoli, Babesia venatorum, Babesia cf. odocoilei.

This review is intended to provide an overview of the occurrence and diversity of Babesia spp. in European deer. Babesiosis is an emerging vector-borne disease with negative implications on animal and public health. Cervidae are important hosts for Ixodidae ticks, playing a critical role in the epidemiology of the parasite. Deer are susceptible to different Babesia spp., some of them with zoonotic potential. The infection is usually asymptomatic with high prevalence rates, although some fatal cases due to B. capreoli and B. venatorum have been reported. In Europe, 3 main Babesia spp. have been

Babesia hegotelforum sp. nov., a zoonotic Babesia species previously referred to as Babesia sp. MO1.

A zoonotic Babesia species previously referred to as Babesia sp. MO1 is formally described and named here as Babesia hegotelforum sp. nov. This taxon is distinct from Babesia divergens based on genome-wide sequence divergence, phylogenetic placement, host associations, and clinical presentation. The parasite infects erythrocytes of humans, and eastern cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus), and is transmitted by Ixodes dentatus. The holotype consists of a Giemsa-stained thin blood smear and cryopreserved infected erythrocytes from the cloned isolate BML-Bh-B12 at ≤10 passages in continuous

Molecular epidemiological survey of Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, and Babesia sp. Mymensingh infections in Mongolian cattle.

Bovine babesiosis caused by Babesia species is an economically significant disease of cattle. Severe clinical babesiosis in cattle is caused by Babesia bovis, B. bigemina, and the recently discovered Babesia sp. Mymensingh. Mongolia is an agricultural country with a large cattle inventory. Although previous studies have detected active infections of B. bovis and B. bigemina in Mongolian cattle, only a few provinces were surveyed. Additionally, the endemicity of Babesia sp. Mymensingh in Mongolia remains unknown. We screened blood DNA samples from 725 cattle reared in 16 of the 21 Mongolian pro

Transfusion-transmitted Babesia spp.: bull's-eye on Babesia microti.

Babesia spp. are intraerythrocytic protozoan parasites of animals and humans that cause babesiosis, a zoonotic disease transmitted primarily by tick vectors. Although a variety of species or types of Babesia have been described in the literature as causing infection in humans, the rodent parasite Babesia microti has emerged as the focal point of human disease, especially in the United States. Not only has B. microti become established as a public health concern, this agent is increasingly being transmitted by blood transfusion: estimates suggest that between 70 and 100 cases of transfusion-tra

Serosurvey of Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina in cattle in Mongolia.

Mongolia is an agriculturally rich country with large livestock populations that contribute significantly to its national economy. However, the export market for live animals and livestock products is often constrained for various reasons including infectious diseases. Babesia bovis and B. bigemina, which are bovine hemoprotozoan parasites, cause severe forms of clinical babesiosis, in cattle. However, a country-wide survey to determine the exposure rates in various provinces in Mongolia was not conducted to determine the risk for infections with these parasite species. Therefore, we investiga

The enzymes of pyrimidine biosynthesis in Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina.

All six enzymes of de novo pyrimidine biosynthesis leading to the formation of UMP have been demonstrated in whole homogenates from two bovine Babesia species, B. bovis and B. bigemina. The specific activities of the respective enzymes were of the same order of magnitude as observed for the related parasite, Plasmodium berghei. The results indicate that both these parasites have the potential of obtaining their pyrimidine requirements by de novo synthesis. Subcellular fractionation established that dihydroorotate dehydrogenase, the fourth enzyme of the pathway, was of a particulate nature. Mam

Comparative genomics reveals unique features of two Babesia motasi subspecies: Babesia motasi lintanensis and Babesia motasi hebeiensis.

Parasites of the Babesia genus are prevalent worldwide and infect a wide diversity of domestic animals and humans. Herein, using Oxford Nanopore Technology and Illumina sequencing technologies, we sequenced two Babesia subspecies, Babesia motasi lintanensis and Babesia motasi hebeiensis. We identified 3,815 one-to-one ortholog genes that are specific to ovine Babesia spp. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that the two B. motasi subspecies form a distinct clade from other piroplasmas. Consistent with their phylogenetic position, comparative genomic analysis reveals that these two ovine Babesia spp.

Evolutionary analysis of Babesia vulpes and Babesia microti-like parasites.

BACKGROUND: The Babesia microti-like parasite is an emerging tick-borne piroplasm that has been detected in a range of hosts worldwide. Babesia vulpes, which is found in dogs and foxes, has been reclassified from B. microti-like parasites. The relationships among these B. microti-like parasites and B. vulpes with respect to host range and geographical origin have not been elucidated. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 27 raccoon dogs in South Korea and used to screen for B. microti-like parasites based on a PCR assay targeting the 18S rRNA gene of Babesia. For comparative purposes, in

Don't let sleeping dogs lie: unravelling the identity and taxonomy of Babesia canis, Babesia rossi and Babesia vogeli.

For most of the 20th century the causative agent of canine babesiosis, wherever it occurred in the world, was commonly referred to as Babesia canis. Early research, from the 1890s to the 1930s, had shown that there were three distinctly different vector-specific parasite entities occurring in specific geographical regions, that host response to infection ranged from subclinical to acute, and that immunity to one stock of the parasite did not necessarily protect against infection with other stocks. This substantial body of knowledge was overlooked or ignored for 50 years. In this review the fir

Postmortem small babesia-like morphology of Babesia canis - short communication.

Here we report a case of canine babesiosis with unusual morphology of the causative agent. A male, seven-week-old Labrador retriever puppy, exhibiting severe anaemia and haemoglobinuria, was presented at the Clinic of Internal Medicine in February 2011. The puppy was euthanised. The most relevant pathological changes were icterus, severe splenomegaly, generalised lymphadenopathy and haemoglobin nephrosis. Samples were collected from various organs for histology within one hour post mortem. Impression smears were also prepared from the spleen after overnight storage at 4 °C. Tissue sections and

Babesia hylomysci and Babesia microti: dexamethasone treatment of infected mice.

The effect of dexamethasone on Babesia hylomysci and B. microti was investigated in LACA mice. The drug enhanced both infections by depressing the immune mechanisms of the host when treatment was initiated before parasite inoculation, but had no effects on established and subpatent infections. The degree of parasitemia in the treated mice seemed to depend on the tropism of either parasite toward mature erythrocytes or reticulocytes. B. hylomysci, which favors mature erythrocytes, produced fulminating infections in treated mice. B. microti, which prefers reticulocytes, produced similar parasite

Biology of babesia.

Recent advances in the knowledge of the biology of the protozoan family Babesiidae is reviewed with special emphasis on those species which cause economically important diseases in cattle. The life cycle of Babesia of cattle is illustrated taking into account these recent advances. Areas of controversy in the life cycles still exist particularly over the presence or absence of a sexual cycle within the tick vector and of exoerythrocytic schizonts in the mammalian host. In the mammalian host, the major parasite division cycle occurs in erythrocytes and it is these stages which induce the pathog

Seroepidemiologic studies on Babesia caballi and Babesia equi infections in Japan.

Antibodies to Babesia caballi and Babesia equi were examined on a total of 2,019 horse serum samples that had been collected in 1971-1973 by the National Institute of Animal Health by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using recombinant proteins and by Western-blot analysis. Based on the criterion for positivity by ELISA, 5.4% (109/2,019) and 2.2% (44/2,019) had antibodies against B. caballi and B. equi, respectively. The ELISA-positive sera were further examined by Western blot; 30/109 for B. caballi and 2/ 44 for B. equi were positive for native B. caballi or B. equi, but none of them

Seroepidemiologic studies on Babesia equi and Babesia caballi infections in Brazil.

Horses from six stud farms representing the most frequent types of horse breeding in Brazil were tested for Babesia antibodies by the IFA test. The farms are located at the tropic of Capricorn at an altitude of 472-715 m where temperatures below 0 degrees C may occur. Horses of conventional stud farms were infested with Dermacentor nitens, Amblyomma cajennense, and Boophilus microplus. Infestation with Bo. microplus was associated with direct or indirect contact of horses with cattle, and was not detected at professional stud farms. At one large professional stud farm, only D. nitens was obser
