Bacillus cereus-induced myonecrosis.

A patient with an incomplete amputation due to a crush injury to his arm developed a myonecrosis with Gram-positive rods noted on muscle and wound aspirates. The patient was treated for a probable Clostridium perfringens infection but culture results proved the organism to be Bacillus cereus. In light of the reported resistance of Bacillus cereus to penicillin, this case serves to emphasize the importance of expanded empiric coverage with high-dose penicillin and an aminoglycoside pending the return of culture and sensitivity results.

Bacillus cereus and related species.

Bacillus cereus is a gram-positive aerobic or facultatively anaerobic spore-forming rod. It is a cause of food poisoning, which is frequently associated with the consumption of rice-based dishes. The organism produces an emetic or diarrheal syndrome induced by an emetic toxin and enterotoxin, respectively. Other toxins are produced during growth, including phospholipases, proteases, and hemolysins, one of which, cereolysin, is a thiol-activated hemolysin. These toxins may contribute to the pathogenicity of B. cereus in nongastrointestinal disease. B. cereus isolated from clinical material othe

Analytical methods for Bacillus cereus and other Bacillus species.

Bacillus cereus can give rise to two distinct forms of foodborne disease, the emetic and the diarrhoeal syndromes. The emetic syndrome is believed to be associated with an emetic toxin pre-formed in food. Cooked rice is the most common vehicle, and the symptoms are similar to those of Staphylococcus aureus intoxication. The diarrhoeal type is caused by an enterotoxin and the symptoms generally parallel those of the Clostridium perfringens food poisoning. The heat resistance of B. cereus spores and the non-fastidious nature of the organism facilitates its survival and/or growth in a wide variet

The Bacillus cereus Group: Bacillus Species with Pathogenic Potential.

The Bacillus cereus group includes several Bacillus species with closely related phylogeny. The most well-studied members of the group, B. anthracis, B. cereus, and B. thuringiensis, are known for their pathogenic potential. Here, we present the historical rationale for speciation and discuss shared and unique features of these bacteria. Aspects of cell morphology and physiology, and genome sequence similarity and gene synteny support close evolutionary relationships for these three species. For many strains, distinct differences in virulence factor synthesis provide facile means for species a

Bacillus cereus food intoxication and toxicoinfection.

Bacillus cereus is one of the leading etiological agents of toxin-induced foodborne diseases. Its omnipresence in different environments, spore formation, and its ability to adapt to varying conditions and produce harmful toxins make this pathogen a health hazard that should not be underestimated. Food poisoning by B. cereus can manifest itself as an emetic or diarrheal syndrome. The former is caused by the release of the potent peptide toxin cereulide, whereas the latter is the result of proteinaceous enterotoxins (e.g., hemolysin BL, nonhemolytic enterotoxin, and cytotoxin K). The final harm

Bacillus cereus causing intratumoral brain abscess.

We report a case of intratumoral brain abscess due to Bacillus cereus in an adult male patient, which was managed successfully with excision of lesion and piperacillin-tazobactam for the duration of 5 weeks. To the best of our knowledge, this is a first case report of B. cereus infection leading to intratumoral brain abscess in a patient with a history of steroid administration by the intravenous route.

Bacillus cereus, a volatile human pathogen.

Bacillus cereus is a Gram-positive aerobic or facultatively anaerobic, motile, spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium that is widely distributed environmentally. While B. cereus is associated mainly with food poisoning, it is being increasingly reported to be a cause of serious and potentially fatal non-gastrointestinal-tract infections. The pathogenicity of B. cereus, whether intestinal or nonintestinal, is intimately associated with the production of tissue-destructive exoenzymes. Among these secreted toxins are four hemolysins, three distinct phospholipases, an emesis-inducing toxin, and prote

[Septic pneumonia caused by Bacillus cereus].

The authors describe the case of a 3-year old girl whose septic pneumonia was caused by B. cereus and developed following serial viral and bacterial infections, which produced assumably transient immunoppressed condition. Attention is drawn to the possibility of serious diseases caused by faculative bacteria in certain cases. The increasing pathological significance of bacteria existing in the soil is pointed out and the importance of hemoculture examination is stressed.

Bacillus cereus cellulitis from contaminated heroin.

Concern exists over recent unexplained deaths among intravenous drug users. This report describes a patient with crepitant cellulitis who was admitted complaining of severe pain in the right forearm. Ultrasonography demonstrated gas in the tissues and he was referred for early surgical debridement of the arm. He was treated with intravenous benzyl penicillin, gentamicin and metronidazole and made a full recovery. Aspirate samples grew Bacillus cereus, morphologically similar to the isolate obtained from a sample of the patient's own heroin. Antibiogram and API 50CHB profiles were also similar.

Genome differences that distinguish Bacillus anthracis from Bacillus cereus and Bacillus thuringiensis.

The three species of the group 1 bacilli, Bacillus anthracis, B. cereus, and B. thuringiensis, are genetically very closely related. All inhabit soil habitats but exhibit different phenotypes. B. anthracis is the causative agent of anthrax and is phylogenetically monomorphic, while B. cereus and B. thuringiensis are genetically more diverse. An amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis described here demonstrates genetic diversity among a collection of non-anthrax-causing Bacillus species, some of which show significant similarity to B. anthracis. A novel Bacillus cereus bacteriophage DLn1 and its endolysin as biocontrol agents against Bacillus cereus in milk.

Bacillus cereus is a common foodborne pathogen that causes vomiting and diarrheal symptoms. Due to its spore-forming ability, B. cereus can resist physical sterilization and possess a relatively high contamination level in dairy products; therefore, it is necessary to develop an efficient strategy to control the growth of B. cereus. In this study, a novel bacteriophage, named DLn1, was isolated and characterized, and its endolysin was expressed. Morphological and genomic analyses revealed that the phage is a new species belonging to the Northropvirinae subfamily of the Salasmaviridae family. T

The Food Poisoning Toxins of Bacillus cereus.

Bacillus cereus is a ubiquitous soil bacterium responsible for two types of food-associated gastrointestinal diseases. While the emetic type, a food intoxication, manifests in nausea and vomiting, food infections with enteropathogenic strains cause diarrhea and abdominal pain. Causative toxins are the cyclic dodecadepsipeptide cereulide, and the proteinaceous enterotoxins hemolysin BL (Hbl), nonhemolytic enterotoxin (Nhe) and cytotoxin K (CytK), respectively. This review covers the current knowledge on distribution and genetic organization of the toxin genes, as well as mechanisms of enterotox
