[Ballistocardiography as a part of cardiac function research].

Provided an overview of materials on the history of the formation method ballistocardiography for diagnosis of cardiovascular disease, an assessment of its current status and prospects for further development. Investigation of the physiological changes in the myocardium by recording ballistocardiogram acquires greater relevance since the existing knowledge in the field of cardiac diagnosis were obtained using instruments that do not meet modern requirements. Although the results of previous studies and define the basic characteristics ballistocardiography nonetheless update and clarification o…

Contactless continuous heart rate monitoring system using ballistocardiography.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the world and is a serious problem. In the case of cardiopulmonary arrest due to myocardial infarction, the survival rate is as low as 13.3% one month after resuscitation, which birthed the need for continuous heart monitoring. In this study, we develop a Ballistocardiogram (BCG) measurement system using a load cell installed on a chair and a heart rate estimation algorithm that is robust to waveform changes, with the aim of constructing a non-contact heart rate acquisition system. The proposed system was evaluated by utilizing data ob

Investigating Cardiorespiratory Interaction Using Ballistocardiography and Seismocardiography-A Narrative Review.

Ballistocardiography (BCG) and seismocardiography (SCG) are non-invasive techniques used to record the micromovements induced by cardiovascular activity at the body's center of mass and on the chest, respectively. Since their inception, their potential for evaluating cardiovascular health has been studied. However, both BCG and SCG are impacted by respiration, leading to a periodic modulation of these signals. As a result, data processing algorithms have been developed to exclude the respiratory signals, or recording protocols have been designed to limit the respiratory bias. Reviewing the pre…

Non-Intrusive Sleep Staging with Integration of Ballistocardiography and Audio Signals.

This paper investigates the use of audio analysis alongside non-intrusive sensors to measure cardiorespiratory parameters for sleep stage classification. A ballistocardiogram (BCG) detected cardiorespiratory signals through vibrations on the mattress, while an Apple Watch Ultra 2 used optical sensors on the wrist for measurement. The cardiorespiratory signals were processed with non-linear methods and autocorrelation functions to create a dataset from the entire system, which was then trained in a long short-term memory (LSTM) model to classify sleep stages. The output was validated using a po

Deep learning-based ballistocardiography reconstruction algorithm on the optical fiber sensor.

Ballistocardiography (BCG) is a vibration signal related to cardiac activity, which can be obtained in a non-invasive way by optical fiber sensors. In this paper, we propose a modified generative adversarial network (GAN) to reconstruct BCG signals by solving signal fading problems in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). Based on this algorithm, additional modulators and demodulators are not needed in the MZI, which reduces the cost and hardware complexity. The correlation between reconstructed BCG and reference BCG is 0.952 in test data. To further test the model performance, we collect speci…

Accuracy improvement for heart rate monitoring from bed-based ballistocardiography signals with motion artifacts.

BackgroundBallistocardiography (BCG)-based heart rate (HR) monitoring faces accuracy degradation due to motion artifacts, limiting its practical deployment.ObjectiveThis study aims to enhance HR estimation reliability under motion-contaminated conditions while ensuring real-time performance.MethodsA hybrid system integrating adaptive filtering and enhanced continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is developed. The framework localizes motion segments (95.1% accuracy) and employs spectral reconstruction via magnitude-frequency nullification to restore HR from contaminated windows. Computational latenc…

Apple Watch Sleep and Physiological Tracking Compared to Clinically Validated Actigraphy, Ballistocardiography and Polysomnography.

This paper investigates the performance of the latest Apple Watch (Series 8, released September 2022) in comparison with research grade devices. The Apple Watch was compared to wrist worn actigraphy, non-contact ballistocardiography (BCG) placed in the bed and evaluated with polysomnography (PSG) as a reference system. Sleep analysis and individual cardiorespiratory parameters were measured from the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch performed well for identifying sleep-wake states but had difficulty identifying the sleep stages compared to the reference PSG system. Physiological parameters obtained…

Automated Detection of Hypertension Using Continuous Wavelet Transform and a Deep Neural Network with Ballistocardiography Signals.

Managing hypertension (HPT) remains a significant challenge for humanity. Despite advancements in blood pressure (BP)-measuring systems and … sent distinct symptoms and may be difficult to diagnose from standard physiological signals. Hence, ballistocardiography (BCG) signal was used in this study to detect HPT automatically. The processed signals from BCG were converted into scalogram images using a continuous wavelet transform (CWT) and were then fed into a 2-D convolutional neural network model (2D-CNN). …

A pilot validation study of contactless ballistocardiography versus polysomnography for sleep and respiratory assessment in older adults.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the agreement between a contactless ballistocardiography (BCG) based sleep monitoring device and polysomnography (PSG) in assessing sleep macrostructure and respiratory parameters in older adults. METHODS: Seventeen male participants (aged 50-80 years) underwent overnight PSG, while being simultaneously monitored using the BCG device. Parameters assessed included sleep latency, total sleep time (TST), durations of light sleep (N1 + N2), deep sleep (N3), rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and derived non rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, along with apnoea-hypopnea inde…

Validation of Dozee, a Ballistocardiography-based Device, for Contactless and Continuous Heart Rate and Respiratory Rate Measurement.

Long-term acquisition of respiratory and heart signals is useful in a variety of applications, including sleep analysis, monitoring of respiratory and heart disorders, and so on. Ballistocardiography (BCG), a non-invasive technique that measures micro-body vibrations caused by cardiac contractions as well as motion caused by breathing, snoring, and body movements, would be ideal for long-term vital parameter acquisition. Turtle Shell Technologies Pvt. Ltd.'s Dozee device, which is based on BCG, is a contactless continuous vital parameters monitoring system. It is designed to measure Heart Rate…
