Bartonella-associated infections.

Bartonella-associated infections occur in immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients. The spectrum of diseases caused by Bartonella species has expanded and now includes cat-scratch disease, bacillary angiomatosis, bacillary peliosis, bacteremia, endocarditis, and trench fever. Most Bartonella-associated infections that occur in North America and Europe are caused by B. henselae or B. quintana. The domestic cat serves as the major reservoir for B. henselae; the reservoir for the modern day B. quintana infection remains unknown. Methods used to diagnose Bartonella-associated infections incl

Bartonella (Rochalimaea) quintana infections.

Bartonella (formerly Rochalimaea) quintana is the etiological agent of trench fever, a disease extensively reported during the World Wars. Recent molecular biology approaches have allowed dramatic extension of the spectrum of Bartonella infections. B. quintana is now also recognized as an etiological agent of fever and bacteremia, endocarditis, bacillary angiomatosis, and chronic lymphadenopathy. Human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients and/or homeless people are the most vulnerable to infection. Poverty and louse infestation were the main epidemiological factors associated with B. quint…

Paleomicrobiology of Bartonella infections.

Studying ancient infectious diseases is a challenge, as written contemporary descriptions, when available, are often imprecise and do not allow for accurate discrimination among the pathogens endemic at that time. Paleomicrobiology offers a unique access to the history of these infections by identifying precisely the causative agents. Body louse-transmitted infections are amongst the most epidemic diseases in history, especially in war and famine periods. Of these, Bartonella quintana was detected by suicide PCR in 4000-year-old human remains, thus representing the oldest evidence to date of a

[News on Bartonella infections].

The review specifies 25 Bartonella species known so far and describes epidemiology and pathogenesis of Bartonella infections which are classified using patient symptomatology including culture-negative endocarditis. Microbiological diagnosis and significant principles of antibiotic therapy of Bartonella infections are also stated.

Laboratory diagnosis of Bartonella infections.

Bartonella species are pathogens of emerging and reemerging significance, causing a wide array of clinical syndromes. In North America and E … ease of use and a high level of reproducibility, however ideal antigens for use in the diagnosis of Bartonella infections have not been clearly identified. Continued work to define antigenic targets of the human response to infection and incorporation of these into a widely available EIA will provide a cost-effective tool for the clinician and epidemiologist alike. Due …

[Unusual manifestations of Bartonella infections].

The authors review the cases of two patients with an atypical form of cat scratch disease. The first case exhibited ileocoecal and hepatoportal lymphadenitis, and the second case the emerging symptoms of a non-specific granulomatous process in the middle third of the right forearm, which caused a differential-diagnostic problem. Establishment of a diagnosis was possible only on the basis of the disease process and the pathological, serological and histopathological pictures of the lymphatic glands after other causes of the lymphadenopathy had been excluded. Following two weeks of antibiotic tr

[Infections dues to Bartonella spp.].

The genus Bartonella now includes four species which may infect humans : B. bacilliformis, B. quintana, B. henselae, and B. elizabethae. B. bacilliformis, the agent of Carrion's disease, was the only species of the genus since 1993 when Rochalimaea species were removed from the genus Rochalimaea and included in the genus Bartonella, within the family Bartonellaceae. B. quintana is the etiologic agent of trench fever, bacillary angiomatosis, septicemia, endocarditis, and chronic lymphadenopathy. B. henselae is responsible for bacillary angiomatosis, peliosis of the liver or the spleen, septicem

Bartonella infections and HIV disease.

Successful assessment and treatment of Bartonella in HIV-seropositive people depends on nursing's fundamental role in the management of these bacterial infections. Bartonella species are responsible for a variety of infections, including cat scratch disease and bacillary angiomatosis, which can be debilitating to people living with AIDS. This paper provides an overview of the clinical presentation and nursing management of Bartonella infection in PLWAs. The author discusses common diagnostic procedures, treatment strategies, and the nurse's role in caring for patients with a Bartonella infecti

[Bartonella henselae and its infections].

In recent years the number of identified Bartonella species has increased rapidly and several species in Bartonella genus isolated from various mammalian reservoirs were recognized as zoonotic agents in humans. Three Bartonella species are considered to be pathogenic for humans; B. henselae, B. quintana and B. bacilliformis. B. henselae causes asymptomatic intraerythrocytic bacteraemia in the feline reservoir host and is the most important zoonotic species as the cause of human diseases including cat scratch disease, bacillary angiomatosis, bacillary peliosis, bacteraemia, endocarditis and neu

Bartonella infections: diverse and elusive.

Children with young cats, HIV-infected patients with low CD4 counts, and lice-infested homeless people are among those with an increased risk. Clinical presentation varies with the infecting Bartonella species and the host. Treatment for cat-scratch disease is supportive; macrolide therapy is an appropriate choice for other Bartonella infections.
