BACKGROUND: Classifying preterm birth as spontaneous or indicated is critical both for clinical care and research, yet the accuracy of classification based on different data sources is unclear. We examined the accuracy of preterm birth classification as spontaneous or indicated based on birth certificate data.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of 123 birth certificates from preterm births in Missouri. Correct classification of spontaneous or indicated preterm birth subtype was based on multi-provider (RN, MFM Fellow, MFM attending) consensus after full medical record review. A cat

BACKGROUND: In 1995, a program was begun at the University of South Alabama (USA) to improve the reporting of medical risk factors on birth certificates.
METHODS: Data on medical risk factors for USA Hospital and the remainder of the state for 1994 and 1996 were examined to observe the effects of the USA Medical Center program.
RESULTS: The number of medical risk factors reported changed markedly between 1994 and 1996 for most items and changed hardly at all for the remainder of the state. The changes for selected factors from 1994 to 1996 were as follows: anemia, 19 (0.4% of all birth certi

PURPOSE: Birth certificates are a convenient source of population data for epidemiologic studies. It is well documented, however, that birth certificate data can be highly inaccurate. Nonetheless, studies based on birth certificates are routinely analyzed without accounting for sources of data errors. We focused on the association between maternal cigarette smoking and cleft lip and palate based on birth certificate data.
METHODS: We adjusted odds ratio estimates simultaneously for exposure and outcome misclassification. We also calculated odds ratios adjusted for exposure misclassification o

The latest revision of the birth certificate features a new checkbox format designed to collect more effectively information for public health research. One of the new checkbox items, medical risk factors for this pregnancy, is designed to collect information on risk factors which result in adverse pregnancy outcomes. Data from 308,573 birth certificates filed in Alabama between 1988 and 1992 were analyzed. Although problems exist with the data collected for this item, useful information can be obtained to investigate important public health issues. First, the data can be used to determine the

In 1989, the state of Tennessee adopted a new birth certificate which incorporates changes recommended by the National Center for Health Statistics in the revised US Standard Certificate of Live Birth. The data now being collected are intended to provide improved information for understanding maternal and infant health issues. To assess data quality, the authors compared information reported on the 1989 Tennessee birth certificates with the same data obtained from an ongoing case-control study in which the delivery hospital medical records of mothers and infants were reviewed by trained nurse

The National Infant Mortality Surveillance (NIMS) project aggregated data provided by 53 vital statistics reporting areas--50 States, New York City, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico (subsequently called States)--from their files of linked birth and death certificates and compared individual States' total infant mortality experiences for the 1980 birth cohort by age at death, race, birth weight, and plurality. Therefore, it was essential to achieve maximum uniformity among the separate data sets and to specify when this uniformity could not be obtained. In working with these multiple s

OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to assess the validity of birth certificate data for estimating the association between maternal smoking and birth defects. The US standard birth certificate includes check boxes for maternal smoking and for 21 congenital anomalies. The sensitivity and specificity of birth certificate data have been studied, but previous studies have not addressed the validity of these data for estimating the association between birth defects and maternal smoking or other risk factors.
METHODS: US public-use natality data (1997-1998) were used to calculate the prevalence ratio (

BACKGROUND: Completeness of case ascertainment is a concern for all birth defects registries and generally requires a multisource approach. Using infant death certificates as one case ascertainment source may identify cases of birth defects that would have otherwise been missed. We sought to examine the utility of adding infant death certificates to the Florida Birth Defect Registry's (FBDR) case ascertainment methods and to determine what factors are associated with the registry's failure to capture infants that die from birth defects.
METHODS: FBDR cases from 1999 to 2006 were matched to a

OBJECTIVE: This study compares gestational age data obtained by clinical estimate with data calculated from the date of the last menstrual period (LMP) as recorded on birth certificates.
METHODS: The authors analyzed 476,034 computerized birth records from three overlap years, that is, those that contained both menstrual and clinical estimates of gestational age, concentrating on cases within the biologically plausible range of 20-44 weeks.
RESULTS: The overall exact concordance between the two measurements was 46%. For +1 week it was 78%, and for +2 weeks it was 87%. Incidence of prematurit

The decline in crime that occurred in the last decade of the 20th century was one of the most important societal changes in recent US history. In this paper, we leverage the sharp decline in violence that began in the 1990s to estimate the relationship between county-level murder rates and individual-level birth outcomes for Black, Hispanic, and White mothers. Using the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting data from 1992 to 2002 and individual-level data from more than 30,000,000 US birth certificates, we employ two-way fixed effects models with a rich set of controls to compare births to similar wom

This study linked birth certificates with Minnesota Medicaid deliveries in order to identify Medicaid births. This article describes the link between methodology and results. Medicaid claims from 1997 were used to identify women with a delivery code. Identifiers for these women were linked to birth certificate files, with a match rate of 93.2 percent. Women's match status did not differ by maternal age. Women in some border counties matched at much lower rates than the rest of the population. The methodology was effective in linking Medicaid and birth certificate data and will be implemented a

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a major cause of preventable mental retardation (1). The development and evaluation of programs for preventing FAS may be enhanced by timely and reliable estimates of the occurrence of this complex birth defect. In 1989, birth certificates were standardized nationally to include check-boxes for reporting FAS and other congenital abnormalities (2). These changes were implemented to improve the potential usefulness of birth certificates for timely and systematic population-based ascertainment of FAS and other abnormal conditions of the newborn (3). To assess the u

PURPOSE: To evaluate the validity of health plan and birth certificate data for pregnancy research.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted using administrative and claims data from 11 U.S. health plans and corresponding birth certificate data from state health departments. Diagnoses, drug dispensings, and procedure codes were used to identify infant outcomes (cardiac defects, anencephaly, preterm birth, and neonatal intensive care unit [NICU] admission) and maternal diagnoses (asthma and systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE]) recorded in the health plan data for live born deliveries betwee

National vital statistics reports : from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Health Statistics, National Vital Statistics System2008eng
OBJECTIVES: This report presents data for 2005 on checkbox items exclusive to the 2003 U.S. Standard Certificate of Live Birth. Information is shown for checkboxes in the following categories: Risk factors in this pregnancy, Obstetric procedures, Characteristics of labor and delivery, Method of delivery, Abnormal conditions of the newborn, and Congenital anomalies of the newborn. These categories are included on both the 1989 and the 2003 U.S. Standard Certificate of Live Birth; however, many of the specific checkbox items were modified, or are new to the 2003 certificate. Data on selected new
