Using individual birth history data from the Sudan Fertility Survey, 1979, parity-related differences in fertility are demonstrated, as well as differences between socioeconomic groups. Rural women, women with no education and those married to uneducated husbands show rapid parity progression and its cumulative effects on fertility which are consistent over all birth intervals. Urban women, women with some education and those married to educated husbands, however, go rapidly through their second and third birth intervals and then more slowly at higher parities. A limitation of the study was th

A cross-sectional study was conducted from September to March 1993 at maternity ward of Jimma Hospital to asses the pattern and determinants of birth interval and the role of contraceptive in influencing the length of birth interval. The information was collected by use of pre-tested questionnaire from 415 mothers by three midwives trained for this purpose. The variables examined were: information on parity, use of contraceptive methods during the preceding birth intervals, breast feeding and some demographic variables such as age, martial status, education. Pregnancy outcome variables such as

Pregnancy burdens maternal folate reserves. Postpartum restoration to normal folate values may take up to 1 year. Maternal folate deficiency during early pregnancy has been hypothesized as a cause of schizophrenia in the offspring. We investigated whether the risk of schizophrenia is increased in persons conceived shortly after another birth. A population-based cohort was established of 1.43 million persons born in Denmark between 1950 and 1983, yielding 17.6 million person-years of follow-up. Schizophrenia in cohort members (5095 cases) and their siblings and parents was identified by linkage

The importance of the length of preceding birth intervals for the survival chances of young children has been established, but the debate concerning the causal biomedical or behavioral mechanisms continues. This article uses data from 17 Demographic and Health Surveys to investigate the effect of birth intervals on child mortality: Anthropometry of children, recent morbidity of children, and use of health services are examined in addition to child survival data for children born in the five years before the survey. Various methodological approaches are used to investigate the relative importan

We describe a regression-based approach to the modelling of age-, order-, and duration-specific period fertility, using retrospective survey data. The approach produces results that are free of selection biases and can be used to study differential fertility. It is applied to Demographic and Health Survey data for Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe to investigate differential trends in fertility by education. Parity progression fell and the intervals following each birth lengthened between the 1970s and 2000s in all four countries. Fertility fell most among women with secondary education.

There have been widely documented beneficial role of vaginal Lactobacillus species as an important biomarker for vaginal health and healthy pregnancy progression. When translating this to clinical settings, pregnant women with low proportions of Lactobacillus and commensurately high proportion of rich and highly diverse abnormal microbiota are most likely to encounter negative pregnancy outcome such as preterm birth and postpartum complications. However, multiple literatures have also addressed this notion that the absence of a Lactobacillus-dominated microbiota does not appear to directly imp

In a Norwegian, prospective study we investigated breast cancer risk in relation to age at, and time since, childbirth, and whether the timing of births modified the risk pattern after delivery. A total of 23,890 women of parity 5 or less were diagnosed with breast cancer during follow-up of 1.7 million women at ages 20-74 years. Results, based on Poisson regression analyses of person-years at risk, showed long-term protective effects of the first, as well as subsequent, pregnancies and that these were preceded by a short-term increase in risk. The magnitude and timing of this adverse effect d

Objective: To explore the impact of interpregnancy interval (IPI) after a singleton live birth on preterm birth based on natural IPI data. Methods: Data were obtained from the Guangxi Population Health Information Business Application Platform. The analysis included women with two consecutive singleton deliveries between 2018 and 2023 from 81 medical institutions in Nanning City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Maternal demographic characteristics and delivery outcome data were collected. The association between IPI and preterm birth was assessed using logistic regression model, with subgrou

To examine the effect of the interval between maternal cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and conception on the risk of congenital CMV infection, the congenital CMV infection rate was evaluated relative to the intervals between deliveries in young women. Among mothers who seroconverted between deliveries, the rate of congenital CMV infection among their offspring was highest when the delivery interval was < or =24 months. However, the risk of transmission remained elevated for women with delivery intervals of 25-48 months and for those with delivery intervals >48 months apart.

The preterm birth of immature triplets before 28 weeks is associated with excess morbidity and mortality risks attributable to extreme immaturity. We report a case of fraternal triplets in preterm labor in which the second and third triplet births were delayed 11 days after the first birth, at 26 4/7 weeks' gestation. The later-born sibs were heavier at birth and throughout their neonatal course in the hospital and suffered less severe complications as compared to the first-born triplet. Delayed birth intervals of triplets in preterm labor should be considered to improve perinatal salvage of i

This study examines the magnitude and shape of the interpregnancy interval (IPI) effect on three pregnancy outcomes: preterm low birthweight (PRETERM-LBW), intrauterine growth-retardation low birthweight (IUGR-LBW), and fetal loss (LOSS). A multinomial logistic regression model is estimated, based on data from the 1988 National Survey of Family Growth which contains pregnancy histories. The results indicate that both short and long intervals raise the risk of IUGR-LBW and LOSS, net of sociodemographic and behavioral variables, but IPI effects on PRETERM-LBW are not clear.

BACKGROUND: Short birth-to-pregnancy intervals have been associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. Racial disparities in short birth-to-pregnancy intervals and adverse perinatal outcomes are also well known. However, little is known about birth-to-pregnancy intervals among African-born black women in the US and risk factors that contribute to short birth-to-pregnancy intervals in this population.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the risk and associated risk factors of short birth-to-pregnancy intervals among African-born black women in Washington State.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study

Across the developing world labor-saving technologies introduce considerable savings in the time and energy that women allocate to work. Hormonal studies on natural fertility populations indicate that such a reduction in energetic expenditure (rather than improved nutritional status alone) can lead to increased ovarian function. Other qualitative studies have highlighted a link between labor-saving technology and behavioral changes affecting subsequent age at marriage, which may affect fertility. This biodemographic study was designed to investigate whether these physiological and behavioral c

AIM: To examine the association between the birth-to-birth interval (BIB) and maternal depressive symptoms at 1 month postpartum, while adjusting for prior postpartum depressive symptoms and other confounders measured during the previous pregnancy.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of multiparous women (parity = 2) who delivered their first and second children at a tertiary perinatal center in Japan. The study was restricted to women whose second delivery occurred in 2018-2024 with available outcome data (n = 1144). BIB was defined as the interval in months between the first

BACKGROUND: Most evidence for interpregnancy interval (IPI) and adverse birth outcomes come from studies that are prone to incomplete control for confounders that vary between women. Comparing pregnancies to the same women can address this issue.
METHODS: We conducted an international longitudinal cohort study of 5,521,211 births to 3,849,193 women from Australia (1980-2016), Finland (1987-2017), Norway (1980-2016) and the United States (California) (1991-2012). IPI was calculated based on the time difference between two dates-the date of birth of the first pregnancy and the date of conceptio

OBJECTIVE: The automated reticulocyte parameters (absolute reticulocyte count, immature reticulocyte fraction (IRF) and reticulocyte hemoglobin content (RET-He)) are of value in managing adults and older children with a variety of hematological disorders. However, the lack of reference intervals for these parameters in neonates and young infants has limited their application to that population.
STUDY DESIGN: During a span of 12 months (29 May 2014 to 5 May 2015), a convenience sample of reticulocyte parameters were run from clinically ordered complete blood counts (CBCs) of infants within the
