Blastocystis hominis is a unicellular organism found commonly in the intestinal tract of humans and many other animals. Very little is known of the basic biology of the organism, and controversy surrounds its taxonomy and pathogenicity. There morphological forms (vacuolar, granular, and ameboid) have been recognized, but recent studies have revealed several additional forms (cyst, avacuolar, and multivacuolar). The biochemistry of the organism has not been studied to any extent, and organelles and structures of unknown function and composition are present in the cells. Several life cycles have

Blastocystis hominis (B. hominis) remains the most common parasite identified through stool examination. A clinician will undoubtedly encounter the presence of this parasite numerous times in their career. Thus, it is vital to know if this organism is a 'friend or foe', or in other words, whether it is a commensal or a pathogen. This will help clinicians decide whether to treat or not. This literature review discusses the best available evidence of the association of B. hominis and two diseases- irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Particularly, focus has been p

Blastocystis hominis (B. hominis) is a cosmopolitan pro- tozoa which parasitizes the human large intestine. This parasite had been considered to be commensal of the large intestine for a long time, because even an intense invasion may be asymptomatic. However, this species is now being regarded as a parasitic organism. In this paper the latest data concerning the epidemiology, diagnostics and treatment of B. hominis invasion have been cited and discussed.

Acute urticaria has many causative factors, which may include infections, medications (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, contraceptives and others), insect bites, physical stimuli, allergens or underlying systemic disorders. Blastocystis spp, although ubiquitous in developing countries, is rarely implicated in causing disease in the developed world. The authors present a case of acute urticaria caused by Blastocystis hominis (protozoon parasite) in an elderly farmer in rural United States. This case vignette emphasizes the importance of checking stool for ova and parasites to

Blastocystis hominis (B. hominis) is a parasite of uncertain role in human disease. It may be identified during a workup for gastrointestinal symptoms, usually in stools. The clinical consequences of B. hominis infection are mainly diarrhea and abdominal pain as well as nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, anorexia, vomiting, weight loss, lassitude, dizziness, and flatulence. Case reports and series have suggested a pathogenic role of B. hominis in causing intestinal inflammation. Also some studies have suggested that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndro

Several reports have appeared that either support or deny the importance of the protozoan Blastocystis hominis as an intestinal pathogen in humans. In this report, we describe the clinical characteristics of B. hominis and its response to therapy in hospital employees found to have the parasite on routine screening of stools. During the study, 49 patients with B. hominis were identified, and 413 stools were examined from these patients. Twenty-nine patients were asymptomatic (59%), and 20 had symptoms of bloating, flatulence, soft/loose stools, or constipation. Of these 20 patients, 10 had sym

The history of B. hominis is unique. Few infectious agents have provoked the many misconceptions that plague this enigmatic parasitic ameba. Conflicting descriptions of its nature and pathogenesis have continued throughout the 20th century. As seen by the greatly expanded number of reports in recent years, B. hominis is now a major subject of study, particularly for evidence of disease causation. Physicians are treating patients with intestinal disease caused by B. hominis. Many mild cases resolve in about 3 days without treatment, but others are acute and chronic disease is common. As with E.

Blastocystis homonis is a common human parasite of uncertain role in human disease. Approximately equal numbers of reports implicate it and exonerate it as a pathogen. Genetic diversity in B. hominis was investigated using riboprinting to study sequence variation in the small subunit ribosomal RNA genes of 30 randomly selected isolates. Extensive sequence variation was discovered in B. hominis ribosomal RNA genes and this species consists of at least seven morphologically identical but genetically quite distinct organisms. If only a subset of the B. hominis variants have the potential to cause

Blastocystis hominis, an intestinal organism of uncertain taxonomic position, has long been considered nonpathogenic. Some recent studies suggest, however, that it may be associated with diarrhea and may respond to treatment with iodoquinol or metronidazole. To investigate this possibility, we identified 148 persons whose stools contained this organism. Of this number, 32 had at least 6 stool examinations performed. Twenty-seven of the 32 persons were later found to have greater than or equal to 1 recognized pathogens--Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia or Dientamoeba fragilis--and, after

INTRODUCTION: Celiac disease (EC) not diagnosed or treated affect histological, immunological and nutritional status of patients who suffer it. These changes allow infection by parasites that cause no symptoms in immunocompetent patients, such as Blastocystis hominis (Bh). OBJETIVE. To analyze the presence of Bh in symptomatic celiac patients and describe the clinical, histological, immune and nutritional status in these patients. MATERIAL AND METHOD An observational descriptive cross sectional study was performed. Thirty symptomatic celiac patients (18 women, mean age 41 years old, range 19-6

Blastocystis hominis is an enteric protozoan associated with clinical illness. To determine the prevalence of intestinal injury in patients with B. hominis infection, the authors prospectively evaluated 18 patients with B. hominis infection by endoscopy and a test of intestinal permeability. Seventeen patients had gastrointestinal symptoms. Colonic mucosa appeared normal by lower endoscopy in 12 of 13 patients, and was friable slightly in 1. Duodenal mucosa was normal by upper endoscopy in nine patients. Pathologic examination of mucosal biopsy specimens did not demonstrate evidence of mucosal

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis hominis is an intestinal parasite known since long. It is cosmopolitan and lives in the colon. It is still the subject of controversy regarding its pathogenicity and possibly opportunistic character.
AIM: We exhibit in this article the results obtained for 4 years on the epidemiological, clinical and biological character and opportunistic Blastocystis hominis, often overlooked in the examination of parasitological laboratories city.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 3257 stool examination (PSE), performed in the Mycology Laboratory of Parasitology of the Char

OBJECTIVE: To seek a better pathway and proper number of parasites for Blastocystis hominis (B.h) infection in normal and immunocompromised ICR mice.
METHODS: (1) 10(4), 10(5) and 10(6) B.h, cultured in RPMI 1640 medium from 3 generations were used to infect mice through oral and rectum; (2) 10(6) B.h were used to infect immunocompromised mice through rectum. The reproduction of B.h in gastrointestinal tract and the pathologic changes in the tissues were observed.
RESULTS: Mice were infected by B.h through either oral or rectum. The infected immunocompromised mice showed slow locomotion, dep

We describe a unique case of severe Blastocystis hominis infection in an elderly man with severe dehydration, marked leukocytosis and hypoalbuminaemia after antibiotic treatment for right pneumonia. The patient recovered after treatment with metronidazole. This case presentation demonstrates the ability of B. hominis to induce severe gastrointestinal manifestations and general deterioration, particularly in light of the controversy surrounding its possible potential pathogenicity. We believe, therefore that aggressive treatment with metronidazole should be instituted, following demonstration o

We studied the occurrence of the parasite Blastocystis hominis in 1066 stool specimens from patients with diarrhoea, and investigated the relationship between the presence of B. hominis in the faeces and the age of patients. The parasite was recovered from 3.7% samples, but as the sole species of micro-organism in the stool it was recovered from 1% samples. There was no statistically significant difference in the number of B. hominis-positive stools between the younger and the older patients (P < 0.25), yet in the latter, B. hominis was more frequently identified as the only species of micro-o
