Carbon monoxide poisoning.

Despite established exposure limits and safety standards as well as the availability of carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, each year 50,000 people in the United States visit emergency departments for CO poisoning. Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur from brief exposures to high levels of CO or from longer exposures to lower levels. Common symptoms can include headaches, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, general malaise, and altered mental status. Some patients may have chest pain, shortness of breath, and myocardial ischemia, and may require mechanical ventilation and treatment of shock. Individuals p

Carbon monoxide poisoning.

OBJECTIVES: We studied the clinical profile and autopsy findings of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning encountered at a hospital located at the altitude of 5,000 ft above mean sea level. METHODS: Clinical and postmortem findings in 25 and 15 cases of accidental CO poisoning respectively were evaluated. The diagnosis was made on circumstantial evidences, definite history of "Bukhari" burning and positive Kunkel's test for carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb). Detailed routine investigations including pulse oxymetry, X-ray chest and electrocardiographical monitoring was carried out in all the 25 patients. Oxy

Occult carbon monoxide poisoning.

A syndrome of headache, fatigue, dizziness, paresthesias, chest pain, palpitations and visual disturbances was associated with chronic occult carbon monoxide exposure in 26 patients in a primary care setting. A causal association was supported by finding a source of carbon monoxide in a patient's home, workplace or vehicle; results of screening tests that ruled out other illnesses; an abnormally high carboxyhemoglobin level in 11 of 14 patients tested, and abatement or resolution of symptoms when the source of carbon monoxide was removed. Exposed household pets provided an important clue to th

Victim of carbon monoxide poisoning identified by carbon monoxide oximetry.

BACKGROUND: Carbon monoxide (CO) is known as a leading cause of unintentional poisoning death in many countries. Diagnosis is usually made by measuring carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), but due to the non-specific symptoms, the crucial step is considering CO poisoning. A possible solution might be screening emergency department (ED) patients. A cutaneous sensor that measures oxygen and CO saturation simultaneously could accomplish that. OBJECTIVES: We report a case in which CO-oximetry screening helped to identify CO poisoning in a patient with otherwise non-specific complaints presenting to a busy u

Carbon monoxide poisoning and phototherapy.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a leading cause of poison-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. By binding to hemoglobin and other heme-containing proteins, CO reduces oxygen delivery and produces tissue damage. Prompt treatment of CO-poisoned patients is necessary to prevent acute and long-term complications. Oxygen therapy is the only available treatment. Visible light has been shown to selectively dissociate CO from hemoglobin with high efficiency without affecting oxygen affinity. Pulmonary phototherapy has been shown to accelerate the rate of CO elimination in CO poisoned mice and

Parkinsonism after carbon monoxide poisoning.

Of 242 patients with carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning examined between 1986 and 1996, parkinsonism was diagnosed in 23 (9.5%). There were 11 men and 12 women. The age at onset ranged from 16 to 69 (mean 45.8) years, with the peak incidence during the 6th decade. The latency before the appearance of parkinsonism varied from 2 to 26 (median 4) weeks, but parkinsonism developed within 1 month after an acute insult in the majority of the patients. All showed encephalopathy with mildly to severely impaired cognitive functions during or immediately after delayed CO sequelae. The common symptoms were g

Hyperbaric oxygen for carbon monoxide poisoning.

BACKGROUND: Poisoning with carbon monoxide (CO) remains an important cause of accidental and intentional injury worldwide. Several unblinded non-randomized trials have suggested that the use of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) prevents the development of neurological sequelae. This has led to the widespread use of HBO in the management of patients with carbon monoxide poisoning. OBJECTIVES: To examine randomised trials of the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) compared to normobaric oxygen (NBO) for the prevention of neurologic sequelae in patients with acute carbon monoxide poisoning. [Headache secondary to carbon monoxide poisoning].

INTRODUCTION: Chronic intoxication due to carbon monoxide (CO) is a condition in which the frequency is underestimated since the clinical features are nonspecific. It is important since serious neurological sequelae may result: an extrapyramidal syndrome, dementia or a vegetative state. The diagnosis is established when there are venous blood levels of carboxyhemoglobin greater than 10%. Early treatment with hyperbaric O2 rapidly improves the symptoms and avoids the development of neurological sequelae. CLINICAL CASE: We report the case of a 30 year old woman who was admitted to hospital for

[Cardiologic aspects of carbon monoxide poisoning].

Carbon monoxide poisoning causes tissue hypoxia because of reduced transfer and altered release of oxygen by hemoglobin. Considering many case histories, we realized that symptoms and clinical signs of acute poisoning are mostly neurologic: coma, headache, dizziness, vomiting. On the contrary, it seems that myocardium, the other organ which mostly requires O2, is attacked in a "silent way". ECG in 5 patients with accidental carbon monoxide poisoning underlined that cardiac rate increased (3 of them presented tachyarrhythmias by atrial fibrillation) and the presence of more or less important al

Myositis associated with carbon monoxide poisoning.

INTRODUCTION: Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning causes hypoxia and inflammation, which could adversely affect muscle. We could find no published information about CO poisoning causing myositis. CASE REPORT: A 53-year-old previously healthy female semi truck driver had CO poisoning from a faulty diesel engine exhaust intermittently over three months, culminating in an episode of acute CO poisoning, with syncope after exiting the truck at the end of the three-month period. Neuropsychological symptoms immediately after the acute poisoning event were followed by the development of fatigue, weakness

[Gesture apraxia disclosing carbon monoxide poisoning].

In their natural environment, most bacteria preferentially live as complex surface-attached multicellular colonies called biofilms. Biofilms begin with a few cells adhering to a surface, where they multiply to form a mature colony. When conditions deteriorate, cells can leave the biofilm. This dispersion is thought to be an important process that modifies the overall biofilm architecture and that promotes colonization of new environments. In Caulobacter crescentus biofilms, extracellular DNA (eDNA) is released upon cell death and prevents newborn cells from joining the established biofilm. Thu

Intestinal infarction following carbon monoxide poisoning.

A 65 year old patient admitted with carbon monoxide poisoning developed acute pulmonary oedema during treatment with hyperbaric oxygen. After initial recovery he developed extensive intestinal ischaemia which rapidly led to death. It is suggested that intestinal vasoconstriction due to left ventricular failure made the gut much more vulnerable to the hypoxic effects of carbon monoxide than the brain and heart.

Narcolepsy mimicking suicidal carbon monoxide poisoning.

We present a case of narcolepsy mimicking suicidal carbon monoxide poisoning. The signs and symptoms of narcolepsy in this previously undiagnosed man were initially missed, which emphasizes the importance of extracting a detailed history of a decedent's behavior prior to his or her death. Narcoleptics are often involved in motor vehicle accidents. This report again demonstrates that narcolepsy and driving don't mix, even when the vehicle is stationary. We also briefly review the various sleep disorders.

Hemiplegia resulting from acute carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning can cause neurological complications such as movement disorders and cognitive impairment through hypoxic brain damage. Although peripheral neuropathy of the lower extremities is a known complication of CO poisoning, hemiplegia is very rare. In our case, a patient who developed left hemiplegia due to acute CO poisoning received early hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT). The patient had left hemiplegia and anisocoria at the beginning of HBOT. Her Glasgow coma score was 8. A total of five sessions of HBOT at 243.2 kPa for 120 minutes were provided. At the end of the
