The putative metal coordinating ligand cyanide was used to study the effects of modifications of the metal coordination sphere on the spectral properties and catalytic activity of cobalt and zinc carboxypeptidases. The absorption spectra of Co2+-carboxypeptidase B in the presence of cyanide pointed to a direct interaction of the ligands with the metal. OBJECTIVE: To assess the sensitivity and specificity of the serum carboxypeptidase B activation peptide in diagnosing and determining the severity of acute pancreatitis.
PATIENTS: Twenty consecutive patients with acute pancreatitis were studied on admission to the Emergency Room: 11 patients had mild pancreatitis, and 9 patients, severe pancreatitis. Twenty consecutive patients with non-pancreatic acute abdomen and 20 healthy subjects were also studied.

Serum carboxypeptidase B levels were measured in adult cows suffering from both acute and mild babesiosis caused by Babesia divergens. In severe infections serum carboxypeptidase B levels started to fall three days after infection and were significantly lower than both preinfection levels and those of mildly affected cows for a period of 10 days starting at the time of maximum parasitaemia. Normal levels were regained on the 23rd day after infection.

Serum carboxypeptidase B (SCPB) levels were measured in splenectomised calves and in non-splenectomised cattle infected with three virulent and one avirulent strains of Babesia bovis, and in splenectomised calves infected with virulent Babesia bigemina parasites. PURPOSE: We have previously done large-scale cDNA transfection screening on human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells and have identified 3,806 cDNA genes that possess the ability of either stimulating or inhibiting cell growth. In this study, we characterized one of these growth suppressor genes, carboxypeptidase of glutamate like-B (CPGL-B), in HCC.

In an effort to trace the evolutionary history of the pancreatic metalloexopeptidases, carboxypeptidase has been isolated from the cardia of the crayfish Astacus fluviatilis. The isolation procedure included affinity chromatography on a column of potato carboxypeptidase inhibitor covalently linked to Sepharose.
