The formation of natural foci of trichinelliasis was shown to depend on the established biocenotic relations between carnivorous animals. A highly intensive transmission of the invasion was recorded in continental areas where predators suffer from the lack of food in winter. Identification of the isolated Trichinella samples using single-pair cross hybridization and isoenzyme identification methods showed that the parasites of predators are T. spiralis nativa on the Northern Caspian coast and T. s. nelsoni on the Southern coast.

In Iran, leptospirosis is endemic to Caspian Sea littoral. The disease appears as a seasonal infection mostly affecting people in rural areas involved in farming. We investigated the prevalence of this infection among suspected patients in Gilan Province by an indirect immunofluorescent assay (IFA), and two PCR protocols, a nested-PCR and a real-time PCR (qPCR), targeting rrs and lipL32 genes, respectively. Cercarial dermatitis is very common among rice farmers in the Caspian Sea area of Iran. The characteristic eggs of Orientobilharzia turkestanicum were found in the feces of a plowing bull. Fifty-six percent of uninfected Lymnaea gedrosiana maintained at 24-25 degrees C produced cercariae, identical to those from natural infections, 21 days after exposure to the miracidia obtained from the feces of the bull. Cercariae of O. turkestanicum from naturally infected L. gedrosiana produced dermatitis on the arm of one of us.

We investigated the bioavailability, mobility, and origin of heavy metals present in sediments from the Anzali Wetland. Chemical speciation of the metals was performed according to the Tessier method. Results indicated that Cd and As showed the highest level of bioavailability, whereas Cr showed the lowest level. Caviar (fish roe of sturgeon) may contain high levels of contaminants. An inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer and a direct mercury analyzer were used to assess the contents of four heavy metals (Hg, Se, Sn, and Ba) in caviar of wild Persian sturgeon sea foods. The levels of Hg ranged from 1.39 to 1.50 μg g(-1), Se from 0.90 to 1.10 μg g(-1), Sn from 0.23 to 0.33, and Ba from 0.71 to 1.17 µg g(-1). This study provides a multidisciplinary analysis of sediment-induced eutrophication in two coastal lagoons of the southern Caspian Sea, integrating hydrochemical assessments, remote sensing techniques, and sediment core investigations. This study aimed to geochemically investigate the sediments of the south Caspian Sea at different depths in summer and winter 2020.
