Nonrespiratory diseases of stocker cattle.

Bovine respiratory disease is the most common health issue affecting stocker cattle. There are several nonrespiratory diseases that affect stockers. The more common diseases include rumen tympany, infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, coccidiosis, photosensitization, and foot rot. Accurate diagnosis, early treatment, and incorporating appropriate preventive measures can assist cattle production.

Metabolic Diseases in Beef Cattle.

Beef cattle are less prone to metabolic diseases as compared with dairy cattle; however, there are disease entities of concern in feedlot and cow-calf beef cattle operations. In one study, a prevalence of 2% was found for ruminant acidosis in a feedlot; however, there is little prevalence information published with regard to metabolic diseases in beef cattle.1 Metabolic diseases covered in this article are hypomagnesemia, ruminal acidosis, and all of the common sequelae, polioencephalomalacia, manganese deficiency, and protein-energy malnutrition (PEM).

[Frequency of neurologic diseases in cattle].

The cases of neurological diseases at the Institute of Animal Neurology, University of Berne, from 1985-1994 were assessed. During this period 532 cattle with neurological symptoms were examined. After 1980 differential diagnostic investigation of rabies negative brains were not pursued anymore and the number of examined cattle brains had declined to 25-30 per year. With the occurrence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in 1990 in Switzerland the number of cattle brains examined has increased to 75-80 yearly. The most frequently diagnosed neurological diseases found are BSE, followed by

Non-respiratory Diseases of Stocker Cattle.

Non respiratory diseases impact stocker cattle health and performance. Frothy bloat arises from high-protein forages and microbial shifts causing stable foam that blocks eructation; mitigation includes lower-risk forages, graze management, and continuous nonionic surfactants such as poloxalene. Interdigital necrobacillosis (foot rot) is a polymicrobial interdigital infection; breach of skin allows bacteria to cause cellulitis, septic arthritis, and lameness; therapy hinges on antibiotics, with prevention centered on environmental hygiene and possibly Fusobacterium necrophorum vaccination. Screening genetic diseases prevalence in Braunvieh cattle.

Heritable abnormalities can cause a reduction in productive performance, structural defects, or death of the animal. There are reports of hereditary abnormalities in Braunvieh cattle from several countries, but no evidence was found on their existence in Mexico. In this study, 28 genes associated with hereditary diseases were screened with the GGP-LD 30K array (GeneSeek®) in 300 Mexican registered Braunvieh animals. Allelic frequencies of the markers associated with illness were obtained for the following: citrullinaemia, spinal dysmyelination, spinal muscular atrophy, Brows Swiss fertility ha

Diseases of cattle in the Solomon Islands.

Between 1967 and 1977 a study was made of diseases of cattle in the Solomon Islands. Tuberculosis was found in only 3 herds and was eradicated by 1975. Brucellosis serology revealed very few reactors and by 1977 the herds involved were considered free of the disease. Significant serological reactions were found to Leptospira interrogans serovars pomona, hardjo, autumnalis and jez-bratislava. There was evidence that infectious bovine rhinotracheitis and mucosal disease were present. Seventeen parasites were identified of which Haematobia irritans exigua, Haemonchus placei, Oesophagostomum radia

Renal amyloidosis in cattle with inflammatory diseases.

BACKGROUND: The association of inflammatory diseases such as traumatic reticuloperitonitis (TRP), mastitis, metritis, and pododermatitis with renal amyloidosis in cattle is poorly described. HYPOTHESIS: Serum amyloid A (SAA) levels are elevated during inflammatory diseases, and renal amyloidosis is formed as a complication. ANIMALS: This study was conducted with 82 crossbred cattle with mastitis (n = 18 cows), metritis (n = 11 cows), TRP (n = 30 cows), and pododermatitis (n = 23 : 15 cows and 8 beef cattle). Ten clinically healthy cows served as controls. METHODS: Hematological, urinary, an

Diseases of yearling feedlot cattle in Colorado.

During all of 1974 we surveyed, for illnesses and deaths, about 407,000 yearling feedlot cattle. The morbidity was 5.1%, with a case mortality of 18.9% and a population mortality of 1.0%. Both morbidity and mortality were higher during fall and winter than during spring and summer. Of the 3,943 dead cattle, 1,988 were necropsied. The most prevalent diseases were: pneumonia, 48%; diphtheria, 6%; brisket disease, 6%; hemorrhagic colitis, 5%; riding injury, 4%; bloat, 3%; calculosis, 2%; endocarditis, 2%; abomasal ulcers, 2%; bovine viral diarrhea, 2%; embolic pulmonary aneurysm, 1%; and pulmonar

Diagnosis of causes of respiratory diseases in cattle.

Cattle with Pasteurella bronchopneumonia usually have a fever, abnormal respiratory sounds in the cranioventral lung fields, consolidation, pleuritis and abscesses. Lungworms primarily affect 4- to 6-month-old calves, which become febrile and dyspneic, with moist rales. Diagnosis is by fecal examination using the Baermann technic. Proliferative pneumonia usually affects stabled adults, which develop severe dyspnea and tachypnea. Diagnosis is by the history, clinical signs and lung biopsy. Acute bovine pulmonary emphysema is caused by ingestion of large amounts of L-tryptophan in lush pasture.

Retrospective study on cattle and poultry diseases in Uganda.

Cattle and poultry enterprises are among the major contributors to food security and socioeconomic empowerment of households in Uganda. However, various diseases constrain their productivity. A two-year retrospective study between April 2012 and March 2014 was conducted using records for cattle and poultry diseases diagnosed at the Central Diagnostic Laboratory (CDL) to determine prevalent diseases in Uganda. The laboratory received 836 samples from poultry (36.3%) and cattle (63.7%). Of the 836 samples, 47.5% had a definitive diagnosis of disease causation. Most of the cattle and poultry dise

Nutritional and dietary interrelationships with diseases of feedlot cattle.

Feedlot economics dictate that highly fermentable rations be fed, leaving the ruminant constantly on the edge of lactic acidosis. Consequently, a number of subtle changes in feed, environment, or management can tip the balance, causing ruminal acidosis. Even though the animal may not die from the immediate effects of a metabolic acidosis, there are sequelae such as mycotic rumenitis, hepatic abscesses, cauda vena cava thrombosis, and pulmonary arterial thromboemolism that may cause subsequent losses. Another condition, typically referred to as atypical interstitial pneumonia/acute bovine pulmo

Diseases of wapiti utilizing cattle range in southwestern Alberta.

Specimens from 28 wapiti (Cervus elaphus canadensis) were collected by hunters in southwestern Alberta in 1984. Various tests were performed to detect infections and conditions that could affect cattle sharing the range or cause disease in wapiti. Serum antibodies were present against leptospiral serovars autumnalis (25%), bratislava (4%), and icterohaemorrhagiae (8%), and the viruses of bovine virus diarrhea (52%), infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (45%), and parainfluenza type 3 (13%). No serological evidence of bovine respiratory syncytial virus, Brucella, Anaplasma, bluetongue virus, or ep

Resilience of Belgian Cattle Farmers Towards Infectious Diseases Outbreaks.

The study addresses the growing risk of infectious disease outbreaks in livestock by developing and applying a composite resilience index to evaluate the adaptive capacity of Belgian cattle farmers in implementing biosecurity measures (BSMs). The framework integrates three core dimensions, that is, implementation, feasibility and effectiveness, across three priority diseases representing distinct epidemiological profiles and transmission routes like brucellosis, bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) and foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). The analysis combines three data sources as follows: (i) a farm-level
