New insights in Cercopithecinae spermatozoa.

Sperm morphometric and morphologic data have been shown to represent useful tools for monitoring fertility, improving assisted reproduction techniques and conservation of genetic material as well as detecting inbreeding of endangered primates. We provide here for the first time sperm morphologic and morphometric data from Cercopithecus neglectus, Cercopithecus cephus, Papio papio and critically endangered Cercopithecus roloway, as well as comparative data from other Cercopithecinae species, i.e. Allochrocebus lhoesti, Mandrillus sphinx and Papio anubis. Following collection from the epididymis

Microscopic organization of the ligamenta flava in Cercopithecinae.

The ligamenta flava have been investigated in Cercopithecus pygerythrus (vervet monkey) and C. mitis (blue monkey) at various levels of the vertebral column. It has been shown that in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions the topography of these ligaments differs. The cervical ligamenta flava do not extend over the intervertebral joints, while in the thoracic and lumbar regions they reinforce and fuse with the capsule. The ligamenta flava from T4 to S1 replace the interspinous ligaments by extending into the interspinous space. The ligamenta flava consist mostly of interwoven layers of ela

[Sublingual structures in primates. Part 1: Prosimiae, Platyrrhini and Cercopithecinae].

1. The sublingual structures of primates have been studied light-microscopically. There are 3 different sublingual structures in the species studied. The plica sublingualis occurs in all primates. The sublingual organ is a topographically modified plica sublingualis which occurs exclusively in Callicebus. A sublingua is present only in the prosimians. 2. The plica sublingualis contains the excretory ducts of the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands. The sublingua is ventrally adherent to the body of the tongue and is, with a few exceptions in Tupaia, characterized by a skeleton of cart

Sequence of eruption of permanent teeth and epiphyseal union in three species of African monkeys.

Sequences of eruption of teeth and union of epiphyses determined for three species of African Cercopithecinae. These sequences are highly scalable and are highly comparable between among the species. Some sex differences in sequence were found within each species. The sequences of epiphyseal union in these species of Old World monkeys are very similar to published sequences in New World monkeys and other groups of higher primates. It appears that there is a single pattern common to the Anthropoidea as a whole.

Bringing up baby: Developmental simulation of the adult cranial morphology of rungwecebus kipunji.

Rungwecebus kipunji is a recently discovered, critically endangered primate endemic to southern Tanzania. Although phenetically similar to mangabeys, molecular analyses suggest it is more closely related to Papio or possibly descended from an ancient population of baboon-mangabey hybrids. At present, only a single kipunji specimen, an M1-stage juvenile male, is available for study; thus, the cranial morphology of the adult kipunji is unknown. In this study, we used developmental simulation to estimate the adult kipunji's 3D cranial morphology. We examined variation in cercopithecine developmen

The phenetic affinities of Rungwecebus kipunji.

The kipunji, a recently discovered primate endemic to Tanzania's Southern Highlands and Udzungwa Mountains, was initially referred to the mangabey genus Lophocebus (Cercopithecinae: Papionini), but subsequent molecular analyses showed it to be more closely related to Papio. Its consequent referral to a new genus, Rungwecebus, has met with skepticism among papionin researchers, who have questioned both the robustness of the phylogenetic results and the kipunji's morphological distinctiveness. This circumstance has been exacerbated by the immaturity of the single available specimen (FMNH 187122)

Cladistic analysis of extant and fossil African papionins using craniodental data.

This study examines African papionin phylogenetic history through a comprehensive cladistic analysis of extant and fossil craniodental morphology using both quantitative and qualitative characters. To account for the well-documented influence of allometry on the papionin skull, the general allometric coding method was applied to characters determined to be significantly affected by allometry. Results of the analyses suggest that Parapapio, Pliopapio, and Papio izodi are stem African papionin taxa. Crown Plio-Pleistocene African papionin taxa include Gorgopithecus, Lophocebus cf. albigena, Proc

Shape variation in the facial part of the cranium in macaques and African papionins using geometric morphometrics.

Macaques are one of the most successful nonhuman primates, and morphological distinctions from their close relatives, African papionins, are easily detected by the naked eye. Nevertheless, evolutionary allometry often accounts for a large amount of the total variation and potentially hides and precludes the detection of morphological distinctions that exist between macaques and African papionins, thus distorting their phyletic comparison. Geometric morpgometric analyses were performed using landmark coordinates in cranial samples from macaques (N =  135) and African papionins (N =  152) to exa

Upper third molar internal structural organization and semicircular canal morphology in Plio-Pleistocene South African cercopithecoids.

Despite the abundance of cercopithecoids in the fossil record, especially in South Africa, and the recent development of morphometric approaches, uncertainties regarding the taxonomic identification of isolated cranio-dental specimens remain. Because cercopithecoids, nearly always found in stratigraphic association with hominin remains in Plio-Pleistocene deposits, are considered as sensitive ecological and chronological biomarkers, a significant effort should be made to clarify their palaeobiodiversity by assessing additional reliable morphological diagnostic criteria. Here we test the releva

Variation in scrotal color among widely distributed vervet monkey populations (Chlorocebus aethiops pygerythrus and Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus).

Vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops) exhibit bright blue scrotal skin which may function to mediate social interactions by acting as a socio-sexual signal. Previous research on scrotal coloration among vervet monkeys was limited to experimental work on captive Ch. a. sabaeus, the least colorful vervet subspecies, and two field studies of the more colorful Ch. a. pygerythrus. In a study of free-ranging and captive vervet monkeys in South Africa (Ch. pygerythrus), West Africa (Ch. a. sabaeus) and the Caribbean (Ch. a. sabaeus), we examined scrotal color variation across geographically distant s

A natural history of Chlorocebus dryas from camera traps in Lomami National Park and its buffer zone, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with notes on the species status of Cercopithecus salongo.

The natural history and taxonomic status of two central African primates, Cercopithecus dryas and Cercopithecus salongo have long been in question. Recent studies confirmed that C. dryas is a basal member of the savanna monkey clade, and that it prefers dense undergrowth in lowland rainforest. While these studies advanced our knowledge of this enigmatic species, key aspects of its natural history remain poorly documented. Furthermore, the lack of a field study that documents pelage patterns of both sexes and different age classes of C. dryas has led to a disagreement over the validity of C. sa

New craniodental fossils of papionin monkeys from Cooper's D, South Africa.

Papionin monkey fossils are common in the Plio-Pleistocene aged karst cave deposits northwest of Johannesburg in South Africa. These deposits have yielded important primate and other vertebrate fauna since their discovery in the early part of the 20th century. In this article, we describe new primate cranial and dental specimens from excavations at the site of Cooper's D in the Sterkfontein Valley that date to around 1.5 million years ago. Unlike other localities in southern Africa, most of the new fossils are referred to Theropithecus oswaldi oswaldi, an extinct gramnivorous monkey related to

Inferring Plio-Pleistocene southern African biochronology from facial affinities in Parapapio and other fossil papionins.

Buried in the same South African cave deposits as Australopithecus, fossil papionins have been referred to Parapapio (Pp. whitei, Pp. broomi, Pp. jonesi, Pp. antiquus), Papio (P. izodi, P. angusticeps, P. h. robinsoni), Theropithecus (e.g., T. darti), Gorgopithecus, or Dinopithecus on the basis of postcanine tooth size and descriptive morphology of the muzzle. The morphological patterns of variation that these papionins demonstrate can help to place the Australopithecus fossils into a biochronological context and provide valuable information for reconstructing regional Plio-Pleistocene turnove

Nonhuman primate models used to study pelvic inflammatory disease caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a global health concern that is associated with significant morbidity and is a major cause of infertility. Throughout history animals have been used for anatomical studies and later as models of human disease. In particular, nonhuman primates (NHPs) have permitted investigations of human disease in a biologically, physiologically, and anatomically similar system. The use of NHPs as human PID models has led to a greater understanding of the primary microorganisms that cause disease (e.g., Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorroheae), the pathogenesis of

APOBEC3G Splicing Defects in Nonhuman Primate Models Result in Disparate Viral Mutational Profiles Relative to Humans.

Nonhuman primates (NHPs), particularly macaques, are indispensable models for studying human infectious diseases due to their close immunological and physiological similarities. Understanding species-specific molecular differences is essential for maximizing the translational value of these models. Here we report that APOBEC3G (A3G) , a potent antiviral restriction factor and the major source of genetic variations in HIV, exhibits a widespread mRNA splicing defect in the Cercopithecinae subfamily, which includes the commonly used NHP models. Driven by intronic polymorphisms, this splicing defe

Discordant organ xenotransplantation in primates: world experience and current status.

The pig-to-primate model is increasingly being utilized as the final preclinical means of assessing therapeutic strategies aimed at allowing discordant xenotransplantation. We review here the world experience of both pig-to-human and pig-to-nonhuman primate organ transplantation. Eight whole organ transplants using discordant mammalian donors have been carried out in human recipients; only one patient was reported (in 1923) to have survived for longer than 72 hr. Therapeutic approaches in the experimental laboratory setting have included pharmacologic immunosuppression, antibody and/or complem

[Data on intestinal parasites of lower monkeys in the Adler apery].

Under captive conditions, a parasite fauna connected with the changes in ecological conditions, feeding, and mode of life is usually formed in monkeys. Species composition of the intestinal parasites has been investigated in six species of the monkeys (Macaca mulatta, M. fascicularis, M. nemestrina, Ceropithecus aethiops, Papio hamadryas, and P. anubis), which were born in the Adler apery and live there for a long time. A comparison with similar investigations carried out in the Sukhumi apery, where the climatic and keeping conditions are practically identical with those in the Adler apery, wa

Ontogeny, function, and scaling of the mandibular symphysis in papionin primates.

In vivo study of mastication in adult cercopithecine primates demonstrates a link between mandibular symphyseal form and resistance to "wishboning," or lateral transverse bending. Mechanical consideration of wishboning at the symphysis indicates exponentially higher stresses along the lingual surface with increasing symphyseal curvature. Lengthening the anteroposterior width of the symphysis acts to resist these higher loads. Interspecific adult cercopithecine allometries show that both symphyseal curvature and symphyseal width exhibit positive allometry relative to body mass. The experimental

Evolution of major histocompatibility complex G and C and natural killer receptors in primates.

Major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-G and -C molecules bear ligands to natural killer immunoglobulin receptors (KIR). MHC-G evolution in primates shows some anomalies. In New World monkeys MHC-G molecules show a high polymorphism and most likely are classical antigen presenters; they also cluster closer to MHC-E in a relatedness dendrogram. Their genes lack intron 2 deletion, which is typical of all other primates in regard to MHC-G. Medium-sized Eurasian-African monkeys (Cercopithecinae) show stop codons in exon 3: only MHC-G isoforms without exon 3 are possible. Big apes such as the orang
