Industrial chemicals and the horse.

Poisoning resulting from exposure to a wide variety of industrial chemicals is not a common occurrence in horses, but it does happen on occasion. A wide range of toxicosis can occur from a wide range of industrial pollutants, such as dioxin, carbon tetrachloride, and tetrachloroethylene, to heavy metals, such as cadmium and zinc. The equine practitioner must consider industrial chemical toxicosis in differential diagnoses and work with a reputable veterinary diagnostic laboratory to confirm or rule out industrial chemical poisoning.

Chemicals used by the poultry industry.

The safe and effective use of chemicals within the live production phases of the poultry industry requires the implementation of integrated health programs. Chemical programs will vary with regard to phase, intended usage, and method and frequency of application. The term "chemicals" herein presented excludes drugs and non-nutritive feed additives, with primary emphasis on sanitation products (i.e., detergents, disinfectants, sanitizers, deodorizers, descalers, and possible combinations), pesticides (i.e., insecticides and rodenticides), and brief mention of soil litter treatments for environm

Fate of chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals in landfills.

One component of preparedness for a chemical attack is planning for the disposal of contaminated debris. To assess the feasibility of contaminated debris disposal in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills, the fate of selected chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and toxic industrial chemicals (TICs) in MSW landfills was predicted with a mathematical model. Five blister agents [sulfur mustard (HD), nitrogen mustard (HN-2), lewisite (L), ethyldichloroarsine (ED), and phosgene oxime (CX)], eight nerve agents [tabun (GA), sarin (GB), soman (GD), GE, GF, VX, VG, and VM], one riot-control agent [CS], and

The spectrum of allergic disease in the chemical industry.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the types of allergic responses which can be seen among employees working in the chemical industry. METHODS: This is a review of current literature. RESULTS: Although allergic reactions are more frequently attributed to protein exposure, there is increasing evidence that certain chemicals can produce allergic disease for each of the four types of allergic reactions described by Gell and Coombs. Type I hypersensitivity reactions are seen with certain low-molecular-weight chemicals. Type II hypersensitivity reactions, exemplified by Goodpasture's syndrome, have been ass…

[Studies on the evaluation of exposure to industrial chemicals].

Among the biological exposure indices of lead, lead in plasma was the most direct indicator of current exposure. Lead mobilized into plasma as well as in urine could be used as an indicator of the internal dose of lead. The ratio of non-treated to restored activity of delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALA-D) was a more specific index than ALA-D activity itself at low levels of lead exposure, excluding the familial or genetic variation in the activity. The methods using HPLC for determining heme intermediate improved the evaluation of the lead effect: delta-aminolevulinic acid in plasma, b

A review of the genotoxicity of the industrial chemical cumene.

The purpose of this review is to evaluate the literature on the genotoxicity of cumene (CAS # 98-82-8) and to assess the role of mutagenicity, if any, in the mode of action for cumene-induced rodent tumors. The studies reviewed included microbial mutagenicity, DNA damage/ repair, cytogenetic effects, and gene mutations. In reviewing these studies, attention was paid to their conformance to applicable OECD test guidelines which are considered as internationally recognized standards for performing these assays. Cumene was not a bacterial mutagen and did not induce Hprt mutations in CHO cell cult

The healthy worker effect in US chemical industry workers.

BACKGROUND: Occupational studies typically observe a 20% deficit in overall mortality, broadly characterized as the healthy worker effect (HWE). Components of the HWE may be addressed by various analytical approaches. AIMS: To explore the HWE in a modern industrial cohort. METHODS: Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were calculated for 114,683 US chemical industry employees, who worked at least 3 days between 1960 and 2005. RESULTS: SMRs were 79 (95% confidence interval 78-80) for all causes, 81 (95% confidence interval 79-82) for heart disease, 70 (95% confidence interval 67-73) for non-…

Toxicological aspects of chemical hazards in the rubber industry.

Only three recognized strong carcinogens are used in the Swedish rubber industry: mineral oil, ethylene thiourea, and trichloroethylene. Besides, many curing agents, accelerators, antioxidants/antiozonants, and retarders may possess mutagenic and/or carcinogenic activity and may thus contribute to the total cancer risk in the rubber industry. Irritating compounds as well as modifiers of biotransformation further contribute to the complex exposure panorama of the rubber industry. Cancer risks in the work environment of the rubber industry can probably be more effectively reduced by general sani

[Industrial noise and presbyacusia in the determination of hearing damage: studies in chemical industry workers].

An audiometric investigation was carried out on 710 workers of a chemical plant in order to ascertain the role of industrial noise and presbysocio-acusia in causing hearing loss. The workers underwent an audiometric test both aerial and via bone, in a sound-proof chamber, after a 16-hour rest from noise. The subjects also answered a questionnaire on nonoccupational noise exposure and previous hearing and dysmetabolic disorders. Noise exposure was assessed on the basis of a cumulative exposure index obtained for each subject by multiplying the mean daily exposure level by seniority in the job.

[Occupational digestive diseases in chemical industry workers of West Siberia].

The high incidence of chronic digestive diseases is recorded in chemical industry workers exposed to the isolated action of noxious substances. The aim of the investigation was to make a hygienic assessment of the risk for occupational digestive diseases in chemical industry workers exposed to a combination of noxious drugs. The working conditions and the prevalence of digestive diseases were studied in 4120 workers engaged in chemical and auxiliary processes. Under the isolated action of noxious substances, the workers had an average of 35% increase in the incidence of digestive diseases than…

[Chronic pyelonephritis in workers of chemical industry: pathogenesis and treatment].

The examination of 500 workers engaged in the production of chemicals detected chronic pyelonephritis in 81 (16%) of them. Such occupational hazards as furnace-charge dust, fly-powder, calcium petre in the air, intensify their toxic action on workers in high temperature and humidity (54-67%) at workplace and provoke pyelonephritis. An experimental model of pyelonephritis was developed in animals exposed to the above environmental hazards. Ceruloplasmin added to combined treatment of chronic pyelonephritis relieves endotoxicosis by reducing content of middle-mass molecules in blood plasma.

Bioflocculation: chemical free, pre-treatment technology for the desalination industry.

Rapid sand filtration (RSF), proceeded by chemical coagulation and flocculation, is a commonly used, effective pretreatment in the desalination industry. We designed and tested a novel, large pilot-scale, two-stage granular Rapid Bioflocculation Filter (RBF) based on a first-stage Bioflocculator (BF) unit followed by a mixed-media bed filter (MBF). The BF filter bed consisted of an extremely porous volcanic Tuff granular medium which provided an enlarged surface area for microbial development and biofilm proliferation. We compared the efficiency of the pilot RBF to that of a full-scale RSF, op
