The handicapped child and child abuse.

For a group of children with handicaps, growth and development are also affected by abuse or neglect. Our understanding of the problems of the abused, handicapped child emerges from experience with 37 children with cerebral palsy who have been maltreated, coupled with a review of the literature in related areas. We identify the following four problems as crucial to the study of abuse and neglect to the child with handicaps: (1) abuse that causes handicaps, (2) abuse that occurs to the handicapped child, (3) compromises in care that can occur when the handicapped child becomes involved with the

Child Sexual Abuse Allegations in Child Custody, Child Visitation, and Child Protection Proceedings: A Scoping Review.

Allegations of child sexual abuse (CSA) in family law cases, such as child custody, child visitation, and child protection proceedings, present complex and sensitive challenges for legal and psychological decision-making. This scoping review synthesizes key findings from 47 empirical studies examining the prevalence, substantiation, and legal consequences of CSA allegations as well as typical case characteristics in this context. The empirical literature falls into three main clusters: Canadian studies using large national datasets from the late 1990s and 2000s; Australian court-based studies

Understanding Child-to-Child Harm: A National Analysis of Child Protection Responses.

Children may experience harm in diverse family contexts, including circumstances in which other young household members engage in harmful behaviors toward them. Despite child-initiated harm being prevalent and causing significant developmental impacts, these cases present unique challenges for recognition in current legal frameworks designed for adult perpetrators. This study examined patterns in substantiated reports involving children who harmed other children (CHOC) using National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System administrative data from 2018 to 2019. We documented state statutory and po

A child-to-child programme in rural Jamaica.

A child-to-child programme was carried out in six rural schools in Jamaica. School children in grades 4 and 5 were taught concepts of nutrition, environmental and personal hygiene, and child development. The children were encouraged to take messages home to their parents and improve the care of their younger siblings. Four hundred and twenty-three children and 90 mothers and guardians from four of the project schools were evaluated and compared with 199 children and 47 parents from two control schools. The project children showed higher scores on a test of knowledge in the topics at the end of

Child abuse: a study of the child's perspective.

This study ascertained the child's response to various types of abuse and neglect. With interviews and questionnaires for the staff of a child psychiatric unit, the mothers and the children involved, we assessed the severity, frequency and duration of physical abuse, verbal abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect or sexual abuse of children. The physically abused children accepted blame for mild but not severe mistreatment. Verbally and sexually abused children did not believe it was their fault if the mistreatment was moderately extensive but did if it was mild or severe. The relationship

SUBJECTS: Seventeen cases of fatal child abuse were reviewed with emphasis on autopsy findings and sociological data. RESULTS: All children who died were less than three years of age; nine were un

Child Neglect and the Broader Context of Child Victimization.

Using a pooled data set of two waves of the National Surveys of Children's Exposure to Violence, this study investigates links between indicators of socioeconomic resources and lifetime exposure to two different forms of child neglect (physical and supervisory), examines how neglect is associated with the risk of other types of victimization, and estimates the impact of neglect on trauma symptoms. Findings suggest that physical neglect is directly linked to economic stressors, while low parental education is consequential for both physical and supervisory neglect. Both types of neglect also we

Mother-child disagreement in reports of child anxiety: effects of child age and maternal anxiety.

The present study examined effects of maternal anxiety, child age, and their interaction on mother-child anxiety reporting disagreement while taking into account the direction of each informant's report relative to the other. Participants were 41 dyads of mothers and clinically anxious children aged 7-13. A hierarchical regression revealed a significant interaction between maternal anxiety and child age (β = .30, p < .05). A graph of this interaction indicated that when maternal anxiety is high and the child is older, maternal report of anxiety is relatively higher, and when maternal anxiety i

Maternal depression, child frontal asymmetry, and child affective behavior as factors in child behavior problems.

BACKGROUND: Despite findings that parent depression increases children's risk for internalizing and externalizing problems, little is known about other factors that combine with parent depression to contribute to behavior problems. METHODS: As part of a longitudinal, interdisciplinary study on childhood-onset depression (COD), we examined the association of mother history of COD, child frontal electroencephalogram asymmetry, and affective behavior with children's concurrent behavior problems. RESULTS: Children in the COD group had higher anxious/depressed and aggressive problems than did chi

[Child dyspnea].

The management of children dyspnea depends on the severity and symptomatology. The severity assessment requires knowledge of the standards of respiratory rate by age and signs of failure ventilatory mechanics. Recognize the time of dyspnea is important because it guides the diagnosis. Inspiratory dyspnea is most often due to viral laryngitis but an age of less than 6 months or no vaccination against Haemophilus should suggest other urgent diagnostics. Dyspnea with inspiratory and expiratory wheeze is a sign of tracheal damage and needs specialized hospital care. Expiratory dyspnea is the sign

Child maltreatment.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are in a unique position to identify and report child abuse. In the career of any practitioner, maltreated children (both physically abused and neglected) will present for management of injuries and infections. There must be a high level of vigilance for, and understanding of, mechanisms of injury and skill in sorting out inflicted injuries or evidence of neglect. Because of this, the medical community, society, state law, and the legal system place oral and maxillofacial surgeons in a position of expertise and accountability in the care of children.

Neurology, child.

Child Neurology concerns the study of the human nervous system during its development, as it is affected by conductivity, embryology and neuro-immunological factors in developmental brain disorders, coagulation disorders and the metabolism of nervous tissue. During a neurological examination the differential diagnosis depends on the localization of the symptoms within vision, strength, coordination, reflexes and sensation. Neurological disorders of the central nervous system may represent the cause of some mental illnesses, making hard to discriminate between the field of application proper of

[Child abuse].

It is estimated that in the Netherlands over 100.000 children per year are victims of child abuse. In more than 50% of the cases of physical abuse there is a trauma of the head and neck area. Therefore, it is likely that (without realizing it) dentists are regularly confronted with cases of child abuse. Dentists have an ethical duty to take positive action in cases of suspected child abuse. They may refer the patient to an oral surgeon, consult the family physician or ask the advice of the 'Advies- en Meldpunt Kindermishandeling' (Advice and Report Centre for Child Abuse). [Child orthopedics].

Children's fractures are a challenge to the treatment system, in that 17,000 children are treated in Denmark each year. The true burden on patients and society is unknown. It is estimated that 1000 new-born infants are treated for hip instability in Denmark per year, and 30 are diagnosed late. Ultrasound scanning is recommended for secondary screening and selective screening of children at risk. Identification of acetabular dysplasia followed by surgical correction could be an important prophylactic measure, with a potential reduction in expenses to society. To some extent, congenital clubfoot

Dehydration, in childhood as in adulthood, may origin from an inadequate water ingestion or an excessive water elimination. Causes may be found in fever, vomiting, scalds, pulmonary hyperventilation, diabetes. Water loss during acute diarrhea in children can be even 6-7 times higher in comparison with an healthy child. Together with water, electrolytes are lost. We differentiate dehydration in isonatremic d. (70% of cases), hyponatremic d. (10%) and hypernatremic d. (20%) basing on Sodium loss. Important dehydration causes severe clinical symptoms as shock, renal and cardiocirculatory failure,
