Chondrosarcoma is the second most common primary bone tumor, with >90% of cases representing the primary conventional subtype. In addition to arising de novo, conventional chondrosarcoma can arise secondary to a benign underlying lesion, such as enchondroma or osteochondroma. Symptoms are often characterized by focal, dull, aching pain to the affected region. Grade is a well-recognized prognostic factor in these tumors. Grade I lesions/atypical cartilaginous tumors rarely metastasize, rarely recur, and have a 10-year survival rate of >80%. By contrast, grade III lesions are associated with a p

The authors report a rare case of primary chondrosarcoma of the anterior mediastinum showing unusual pathological and clinical features, namely 1) the lack of any anatomical relationship between the tumor and cartilage-containing organs, and 2) an indolent behavior with long-term survival. In spite of early disease recurrence and repeated surgery, the patient is in good health five years after primary surgery. The reported case suggests that 1) primary chondrosarcomas of the anterior mediastinum may have a better prognosis than previously recognized, 2) the disease can remain confined within t

Analysis was made of 37 cases of chondrosarcoma of the maxilla or the mandible. The most common complaint at initial presentation was the presence of a mass. Pain was a presenting symptom in less than half of the patients. The usual roentgenographic appearance was an ill-defined radiolucency with mottled areas of calcification. When teeth were involved, some cases showed a widened periodontal membrane space on periapical dental radiographs. Histologically, the tumors usually showed recognizable cartilage and a lobular growth pattern, but cellular evidence of malignancy was often subtle. Radica

Chondrosarcoma is a rare entity of malignant tumor which arises from cartilaginous tissue, and the literatures on this disease are scarce. The first-line of treatment for cardiac chondrosarcoma is surgery. Due to early local recurrence and distant metastasis, the prognosis is poor even after complete surgical excision. We present a case of chondrosarcoma in the left atrium causing functional mitral stenosis which required urgent surgical intervention, and the successful treatment outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Chondrosarcoma of the larynx is a rare neoplasm generally observed on the cricoid. The purpose of this study was to define the most appropriate surgical management depending on tumor extension and histological grade.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three males and one female were treated for chondrosarcoma of the cricoid between 1990 and 2003 in the Ear, Nose and Throat department in Tours, France. There were three grade I tumors and one grade II tumor. Tumor resection by thyrotomy was performed in two patients, total laryngectomy in one and laser desobstruction in one.
RESULTS: The patient

Two cases of laryngeal chondrosarcoma are described. The first exhibited a fibrosarcomatous differentiation, which is a rare finding in chondrosarcoma and usually indicates poor prognosis. The second was found in a larynx six years after Teflon injections for the treatment of vocal cord paralysis. The possibility of Teflon as a tumorigenic factor in this case is raised.

A primary chondrosarcoma of the right main bronchus was removed by pneumonectomy in a 74-year-old woman. The presenting symptoms were dyspnea and cough with a lung mass evident for 18 months. She is well and free of tumor 16 months later. Only eight established cases of primary chondrosarcoma arising from the lung, and four originating from the tracheobronchial tree have been previously described. The long preoperative history and the outcome so far confirm the relatively less aggressive character of the tracheobronchial as compared to the lung subdivision of primary pulmonary chondrosarcoma.

A woman in her 70s reported to the outpatient department of our tertiary care hospital with chief complaints of painless swelling in the right cheek and palatal area. The patient was a known case of diabetes mellitus and hypertension on medications with controlled sugars and blood pressure. The swelling was 10×8 cm in size extending from right infraorbital region up to the lower mandible. CT demonstrated a permeative lytic pattern of bone destruction noted involving the hard palate and maxillary bone.Using the Weber Ferguson approach, a surgical resection was carried out under general anaesthe

The authors report 5 cases of chondrosarcoma of the hand brought together over a period of 20 years. The series comprises 3 men and 2 woman of average age 42 years. In two cases the tumour arose from degeneration in a preexisting lesion of Ollier's disease. Diagnosis was made on clinical and radiological criteria. Confirmation of the diagnosis by histological examination proved to be difficult in 2 cases. The treatment was surgical, with ray amputation in 3 cases and curettage with bone graft in the other 2. None of the patients had a recurrence at 4.5 years mean follow-up.

Enchondroma and chondrosarcoma are two of the most commonly encountered primary bone lesions in the typical radiology practice. The purpose of this article is to review the clinical, radiological, and pathological features that distinguish conventional chondrosarcoma from enchondroma. Chondrosarcoma is almost always associated with pain and tends to present in the axial skeleton of middle aged adults. Enchondroma tends to present in young adults in the appendicular skeleton, particularly the hands, and is often an incidental finding. Although both lesions have characteristic radiographic appea

BACKGROUND: Manifestation of chondrosarcoma (CS) in the head and neck region is rare but it is the most frequently encountered non-epithelial malignancy of the larynx. Since this tumor entity is frequently neglected, its characteristics including differential diagnosis and therapy will be discussed in the following.
PATIENTS: From 1975 to 1995, five cases with CS were diagnosed and treated in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, University of Kiel.
RESULTS: The medical history of this five patients (one woman, four men, average age: 71 years) varied from 9 months to

Chondrosarcomas are rare in cattle and none has been described in detail. A 30 cm diameter chondrosarcoma centred upon the costochondral junctions of the left 9th to 12th ribs of a 5-year-old Aberdeen Angus cow is described. In areas with a cartilaginous matrix the chondrocytes were plump, sometimes binucleate, sometimes bizarre, with occasionally 2 or more cells per lacuna. The other major matrix was loose and fibrillar, and the cells were spindle-shaped or stellate, with a moderate mitotic rate. Small areas appeared fibrosarcomatous. Both major types of matrix were present in the metastases,

A chondrosarcoma arising in the posterior cricoid plate is presented. The tumour gave rise to increasing inspiratory stridor: laryngectomy was performed. The tumour consisted of loose cartilaginous tissue with great predominance of highly differentiated cartilage cells and only small areas with nuclear polymorphism. This complicated the differential diagnosis between chondroma and highly differentiated chondrosarcoma. From the fact that the patient died from massive pulmonary metastases 3 1/2 years later, it is evident that the degree of malignancy of cartilaginous tumours should be determined

Extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is a rare malignancy. It is characteriged by a bimorphic histologic pattern, with a mesenchymal tissue mixed with malignant hyaline cartilage. It also has high incidence of local recurrence and distant metastasis. All cases have been reported fatal associated with this tumor in spite of complete surgical excision. A 35-year-old female presented with a palpable mass about 5 x 3 x 2.5 cm3 in size over her left forearm and was reported to be an extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma. Marginal resection followed by regional radiotherapy was done. No local

For chondrosarcoma, metastasis to the thyroid gland is extremely rare. The diagnosis and treatment of thyroid metastasis from chondrosarcoma are discussed here.We found a case of thyroid malignancy occurring after treatment of chondrosarcoma. We reviewed patient characteristics, histological presentations on initial chondrosarcoma and thyroid metastasis, treatments, times of recurrence and death. In addition, we searched Embase, PubMed, and ISI Web of Science databases (1996-2018) for articles published in the English language using the key words "chondrosarcoma" and "thyroid" and we reviewed

BACKGROUND: Intracranial extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcomas (MCSs) are rare tumors accounting for <0.16% of intracranial tumors. They are usually described as occurring in the age group of 20-30 years and are commonly found in the frontoparietal region arising from the falx and surrounding dura. We describe 3 cases at varying ages, locations, and outcomes.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 42-year-old woman with anterior one third falx-based lesion; a 7-year-old boy with mid one third falcine lesion with hyperostosis of bone, presenting in comatose stage; and a 52-year-old woman with left posterior

A 17-year-old female, who had diplopia and progressive gait disturbance, had been diagnosed as having a right parasellar mass lesion in 1986. Initial CT scan failed to show a parasellar space occupying lesion, although it was well demonstrated on MRI. No surgery was carried out at that time. Seven years later, she was hospitalized because of progressive gait disturbance, lower cranial nerves palsy, and cerebellar sign as well as the known right abducence palsy. At this time, CT scan exhibited a huge low density area with a marginal high density area suggesting calcification, which extended fro

Chondrosarcoma of the skull base is a rare neoplasm. The most common presenting symptoms are hoarseness, dysphagia, and diplopia, which is associated with palsies of cranial nerves X, IX, and VI. The temporal bone is the most common site of tumor origin, followed by the sphenoid bone. These tumors must be differentiated from chordoma, chondroid chordoma, osteogenic sarcoma, enchondroma, and meningioma. Diagnosis is made by patient history, radiologic imaging, and biopsy. The treatment is surgical excision followed by radiation therapy. Five-year survival rates for grades I, II, and III are 90,
