Extended magenta aurora as revealed by citizen science.

During large geomagnetic storms, red auroras are typically observed from low-latitude countries such as Japan. The color arises from a specific emission line of oxygen atoms at high altitudes. However, during the May 10-11th 2024 superstorm, magenta auroras were observed above Japan instead of the typical red. In this study, we demonstrate that the magenta hue is created by a mixture of red (O) and a blue (N2+) aurora at extremely high altitudes. The blue color originates from the N2+ first negative emission band caused by both resonant scattering of the upwelling molecular ions and heavy part

Estimating disease vector population size from citizen science data.

Citizen science projects have the potential to address hypotheses requiring extremely large datasets that cannot be collected with the financial and labour constraints of most scientific projects. Data collection by the general public could expand the scope of scientific enquiry if these data accurately capture the system under study. However, data collection inconsistencies by the untrained public may result in biased datasets that do not accurately represent the natural world. In this paper, we harness the availability of scientific and public datasets of the Lyme disease tick vector to iden

Citizen science-based biodiversity monitoring in oil palm plantations.

Agricultural expansion is one of the main threats to global biodiversity. Yet, many wildlife species survive, and sometimes even thrive, in agricultural landscapes that retain patches of natural ecosystems. This paradox is evident in tropical oil palm (Elaeis guineensis, Jacq.) plantations that have both replaced tropical forest and other species-rich ecosystems, but can also function as wildlife habitat, especially if fragments of natural ecosystems are retained. There is an urgent need to understand how to manage and monitor wildlife in these landscapes. The lack of large, quantitative datas

Success factors for citizen science projects in water quality monitoring.

Attempts to monitor the quality of freshwater resources on a global scale unveil huge data lacks. Involving citizens in data collection has potential to resolve this lack of water quality data. However, it is widely unclear which factors drive the success of citizen science activities. Based on a systematic literature review of 56 peer-reviewed research articles, we identify three sets of factors for successful citizen science projects in water quality monitoring: (i) attributes of citizens (knowledge and experience in collecting data, awareness of environmental problems, motivation, and socio

Long-distance observations: integrating atmospheric optics, meteorology, and citizen science.

Long-distance observations (LDOs)-the visual or photographic documentation of terrestrial objects from distances often exceeding the geometric horizon-are an emerging interdisciplinary field. However, a robust scientific basis that integrates empirical records with atmospheric physics is currently lacking. This study establishes such a methodology by combining a systematic typology of LDOs with a quantitative analysis of their controlling physical factors. The methodology integrates numerical simulations with analyses of photographic case studies from dedicated observer communities, including

Volunteers' diverse and unexpected knowledge practices in contributory citizen science.

BACKGROUND: The most common environmental citizen science program type, often called “contributory” citizen science, invites volunteers to help with data collection. But is that all their volunteers do? Previous research has tended to consider the knowledge practices of citizen scientists from the perspective of program organizers, or has paid attention to knowledge as simply content (that is, the input, output, and outcomes of programs). There is a need to better understand knowledge practices as experienced by citizen scientists. This exploratory and ethnographic study investigated the knowl

Emerging technologies in citizen science and potential for insect monitoring.

Emerging technologies are increasingly employed in environmental citizen science projects. This integration offers benefits and opportunities for scientists and participants alike. Citizen science can support large-scale, long-term monitoring of species occurrences, behaviour and interactions. At the same time, technologies can foster participant engagement, regardless of pre-existing taxonomic expertise or experience, and permit new types of data to be collected. Yet, technologies may also create challenges by potentially increasing financial costs, necessitating technological expertise or de

Machine learning to support citizen science in urban environmental management.

Machine learning (ML) and citizen science (CS) are increasingly prevalent and rapidly evolving approaches to studying and managing environmental challenges. Municipal and other governance actors can benefit from technology advances in ML and public engagement benefits of CS but must also address validity and other quality assurance concerns in their application to particular management contexts. In this article, we take up the pervasive challenge of urban litter to demonstrate how ML can support CS by providing quality assurance in the regulatory context of California's stormwater program. We

Integrating Citizen Science into Advanced Practice Nursing education: a contemporary challenge.

Advanced Practice Nursing is internationally recognised as an innovative model of practice that expands the traditional scope of nursing by integrating specialised knowledge, advanced clinical skills, and greater autonomy in clinical decision-making. Within this model, research competence is recognised as a strategic pillar for consolidating Advanced Practice Nursing practice. Citizen Science, in turn, represents an innovative approach that promotes the active involvement of citizens throughout the research process, strengthening the alignment between research priorities and community needs. Citizen science chlorine surveillance during the Flint, Michigan federal water emergency.

Rising incidence of waterborne diseases including Legionellosis linked to low chlorine residuals in buildings and the availability of inexpensive testing options, create an opportunity for citizen science chorine monitoring to complement sampling done by water utilities. University researchers and Flint residents coordinated a citizen science chlorine surveillance campaign in Flint, Michigan in 2015-19, that helped expose the nature of two deadly Legionnaires Disease outbreaks in 2014-2015 during the Flint Water Crisis and progress of system recovery during the Federal emergency. Citizen science informs human-tick exposure in the Northeastern United States.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne disease is the result of spillover of pathogens into the human population. Traditionally, literature has focused on characterization of tick-borne disease pathogens and ticks in their sylvatic cycles. A limited amount of research has focused on human-tick exposure in this system, especially in the Northeastern United States. Human-tick interactions are crucial to consider when assessing the risk of tick-borne disease since a tick bite is required for spillover to occur. METHODS: Citizen scientists collected ticks from the Northeastern US through a free nationwide progra

Citizen science-Large Language Model alliance for automatic assessment of river hydromorphology.

Hydromorphological assessment is a fundamental component of river ecosystem evaluation and management, yet standardized field protocols such as the River Habitat Survey (RHS) require trained personnel and substantial field effort. This study investigates whether multimodal large language models (LLMs) can support preliminary hydromorphological screening based solely on photographic documentation of river reaches originating from citizen science datasets. A dataset of 60 river sections previously assessed using the RHS field protocol was used as a reference. For each reach, photographic images

Beyond Balance: An Ethnography of Validity and Engagement in Citizen Science Practice.

Citizen science (CS) is often characterized as involving inherent trade-offs between scientific validity and public engagement. While existing literature has documented these competing imperatives, less is known about the concrete organizational mechanisms that enable their coexistence. Based on ethnographic fieldwork at the Israel Center for Citizen Science (ICCS), this article examines how hybrid knowledge production is sustained not by resolving this tension, but by structuring it. ICCS functions as a unique scientific site where the primary 'instruments' are communities of human participan

Use of Citizen Science to Determine Prey Partitioning Between Two Coastal Raptors.

In order to effectively conserve a species, it is often important to understand the ecological niche it occupies, and the resources required to sustain it. For predators, prey is typically the most important resource, and predators either outcompete for or partition resources to secure long-term food security. Raptors have been shown to utilise both strategies. However, demonstrating competition and prey partitioning between raptors is difficult. Traditional diet collection methods can be prohibitively time-consuming over large spatial areas and biased towards breeding individuals and nest sit

A citizen-science-enabled catalogue of the vaginal microbiome and associated factors.

Understanding the composition and function of the vaginal microbiome is crucial for reproductive and overall health. Here we established the Isala citizen-science project to analyse the vaginal microbiomes of 3,345 women in Belgium (18-98 years) through self-sampling, 16S amplicon sequencing and extensive questionnaires. The overall vaginal microbiome composition was strongly tied to age, childbirth and menstrual cycle phase. Lactobacillus species dominated 78% of the vaginal samples. Specific bacterial taxa also showed to co-occur in modules based on network correlation analysis. Notably, the

Citizen science reveals landscape-scale exposures to multiazole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus bioaerosols.

Using a citizen science approach, we identify a country-wide exposure to aerosolized spores of a human fungal pathogen, Aspergillus fumigatus, that has acquired resistance to the agricultural fungicide tebuconazole and first-line azole clinical antifungal drugs. Genomic analysis shows no distinction between resistant genotypes found in the environment and in patients, indicating that at least 40% of azole-resistant A. fumigatus infections are acquired from environmental exposures. Hotspots and coldspots of aerosolized azole-resistant spores were not stable between seasonal sampling periods. Th
