Climate-based risk models for Fasciola hepatica in Colombia.

A predictive Fasciola hepatica model, based on the growing degree day-water budget (GDD-WB) concept and the known biological requirements of the parasite, was developed within a geographical information system (GIS) in Colombia. Climate-based forecast index (CFI) values were calculated and represented in a national-scale, climate grid (18 x 18 km) using ArcGIS 9.3. A mask overlay was used to exclude unsuitable areas where mean annual temperature exceeded 25 °C, the upper threshold for development and propagation of the F. hepatica life cycle. The model was then validated and further developed

Noise-controlled critical slowing down in forced neural and climate models.

Slowly forced nonlinear systems are known to exhibit delayed transitions beyond static bifurcation thresholds, a phenomenon that can be substantially modified by additive noise. In this work, we investigate how stochastic fluctuations modulate bifurcation delay and tipping dynamics in two representative models: the FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) neuronal excitable system and the Stommel model of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation collapse. Both systems are analyzed within a unified first-passage framework. For the FHN model, we combine deterministic delay scaling with channel-resolved first-pa

Projecting stock market impacts of climate change via rational bubble models.

In this paper, we develop a rational bubble model to quantify the susceptibility of global stock markets to future temperature rises. The approach builds on existing theory incorporating the unpredictable timing of future Black-Swan events alongside price risks that increase in line with global temperature. An alternative specification where climate-change risks are instead linked to atmospheric carbon dioxide levels is also given. The approach offers simplicity, transparency and allows national-level effects to be estimated. In the short term, prices are artificially inflated and volatility a

Potential malaria outbreak in Germany due to climate warming: risk modelling based on temperature measurements and regional climate models.

PURPOSE: Climate warming can change the geographic distribution and intensity of the transmission of vector-borne diseases such as malaria. The transmitted parasites usually benefit from increased temperatures as both their reproduction and development are accelerated. Lower Saxony (northwestern Germany) has been a malaria region until the 1950s, and the vector species are still present throughout Germany. This gave reason to investigate whether a new autochthonous transmission could take place if the malaria pathogen was introduced again in Germany. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The spatial distrib

Predicting Valley Fever Outbreaks: Novel Mechanistic Models Incorporating Climate and Ecological Interactions.

Coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever) is an environmentally acquired fungal infection endemic to the arid Americas, presenting a growing public health challenge as changing environmental patterns threaten to amplify exposure risks across both established and newly recognized endemic zones. Historically, forecasting efforts have relied on statistical correlations with meteorological variables. These phenomenological models often fail to capture the complex, non-linear interactions between the saprobic (environmental) and parasitic (host) life cycles of Coccidioides, particularly under non-stationar

Assessing the climate impact of dairy farming: Incorporation of climate modelling and food-feed competition.

Dairy production is a major source of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, especially non‑carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Climate impact assessments of dairy farming need to account for differences between short- and long-lived GHGs, and for the net contribution of dairy production to human food supply. Based on survey data from 48 confined dairy farms in Henan, China, we found that in the production of one kg of human-edible protein (HEP) in milk and meat, an average of 18.1 kg CO2, 1.16 kg methane (CH4) and 0.03 kg nitrous oxide (N2O) were emitted. Results from a reduced-complexity climate

Dynamical-generative downscaling of climate model ensembles.

Regional high-resolution climate projections are crucial for many applications, such as agriculture, hydrology, and natural hazard risk assessment. Dynamical downscaling, the state-of-the-art method to produce localized future climate information, involves running a regional climate model (RCM) driven by an Earth System Model (ESM), but it is too computationally expensive to apply to large climate projection ensembles. We propose an approach combining dynamical downscaling with generative AI to reduce the cost and improve the uncertainty estimates of downscaled climate projections. In our fram

A scalable climate health justice assessment model.

This paper introduces a scalable "climate health justice" model for assessing and projecting incidence, treatment costs, and sociospatial disparities for diseases with well-documented climate change linkages. The model is designed to employ low-cost secondary data, and it is rooted in a perspective that merges normative environmental justice concerns with theoretical grounding in health inequalities. Since the model employs International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) disease codes, it is transferable to other contexts, appropriate for use across sp

Climate-driven models of leptospirosis dynamics in tropical islands from three oceanic basins.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonosis which remains poorly known despite its epidemic potential, especially in tropical islands where outdoor lifestyle, vulnerability to invasive reservoir species and hot and rainy climate constitute higher risks for infections. Burden remains poorly documented while outbreaks can easily overflow health systems of these isolated and poorly populated areas. Identification of generic patterns driving leptospirosis dynamics across tropical islands would help understand its epidemiology for better preparedness of communities. In this study, we aim to m

Climate-based models for West Nile Culex mosquito vectors in the Northeastern US.

Climate-based models simulating Culex mosquito population abundance in the Northeastern US were developed. Two West Nile vector species, Culex pipiens and Culex restuans, were included in model simulations. The model was optimized by a parameter-space search within biological bounds. Mosquito population dynamics were driven by major environmental factors including temperature, rainfall, evaporation rate and photoperiod. The results show a strong correlation between the timing of early population increases (as early warning of West Nile virus risk) and decreases in late summer. Simulated abunda

Scale effects in species distribution models: implications for conservation planning under climate change.

Predictions of future species' ranges under climate change are needed for conservation planning, for which species distribution models (SDMs) are widely used. However, global climate model-based (GCM) output grids can bias the area identified as suitable when these are used as SDM predictor variables, because GCM outputs, typically at least 50x50 km, are biologically coarse. We tested the assumption that species ranges can be equally well portrayed in SDMs operating on base data of different grid sizes by comparing SDM performance statistics and area selected by four SDMs run at seven grid siz

Predicting future tropical theileriosis risk in China using tick distribution and climate models.

Tropical theileriosis, caused by Theileria annulata, is a tick-borne protozoan disease with high morbidity and mortality rates. While climate change and expanding livestock trade may increase transmission risks, the spatial distribution dynamics of tropical theileriosis in China under future climate scenarios remain poorly understood. This study aimed to predict the future distribution dynamics of tropical theileriosis in China by integrating climate variables and tick vector distribution data. We developed two MaxEnt-based prediction frameworks: one incorporating 19 climatic variables alone,

Climate sensitivity and relative humidity changes in global storm-resolving model simulations of climate change.

The climate simulation frontier of a global storm-resolving model (GSRM; or k-scale model because of its kilometer-scale horizontal resolution) is deployed for climate change simulations. The climate sensitivity, effective radiative forcing, and relative humidity changes are assessed in multiyear atmospheric GSRM simulations with perturbed sea-surface temperatures and/or carbon dioxide concentrations. Our comparisons to conventional climate model results can build confidence in the existing climate models or highlight important areas for additional research. This GSRM's climate sensitivity is

Prediction of Oncomelania hupensis distribution in association with climate change using machine learning models.

BACKGROUND: Oncomelania hupensis is the sole intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum. Its emergence and recurrence pose a constant challenge to the elimination of schistosomiasis in China. It is important to accurately predict the snail distribution for schistosomiasis prevention and control. METHODS: Data describing the distribution of O. hupensis in 2016 was obtained from the Yunnan Institute of Endemic Disease Control and Prevention. Eight machine learning algorithms, including eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), generalized boosting model

Time series models for prediction of leptospirosis in different climate zones in Sri Lanka.

In tropical countries such as Sri Lanka, where leptospirosis-a deadly disease with a high mortality rate-is endemic, prediction is required for public health planning and resource allocation. Routinely collected meteorological data may offer an effective means of making such predictions. This study included monthly leptospirosis and meteorological data from January 2007 to April 2019 from Sri Lanka. Factor analysis was first used with rainfall data to classify districts into meteorological zones. We used a seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model for univariate predicti

Climate change, crop yields, and undernutrition: development of a model to quantify the impact of climate scenarios on child undernutrition.

BACKGROUND: Global climate change is anticipated to reduce future cereal yields and threaten food security, thus potentially increasing the risk of undernutrition. The causation of undernutrition is complex, and there is a need to develop models that better quantify the potential impacts of climate change on population health. OBJECTIVES: We developed a model for estimating future undernutrition that accounts for food and nonfood (socioeconomic) causes and can be linked to available regional scenario data. We estimated child stunting attributable to climate change in five regions in South Asi

Modeling Climate Suitability of the Western Blacklegged Tick in California.

Ixodes pacificus Cooley & Kohls (Acari: Ixodidae), the primary vector of Lyme disease spirochetes to humans in the far-western United States, is broadly distributed across Pacific Coast states, but its distribution is not uniform within this large, ecologically diverse region. To identify areas of suitable habitat, we assembled records of locations throughout California where two or more I. pacificus were collected from vegetation from 1980 to 2014. We then employed ensemble species distribution modeling to identify suitable climatic conditions for the tick and restricted the results to land c

Modelling recent and future climatic suitability for fasciolosis in Europe.

Fasciola hepatica is a parasitic worm responsible for fasciolosis in grazed ruminants in Europe. The free-living stages of this parasite are sensitive to temperature and soil moisture, as are the intermediate snail hosts the parasite depends on for its life-cycle. We used a climate-driven disease model in order to assess the impact of recent and potential future climate changes on the incidence of fasciolosis and to estimate the related uncertainties at the scale of the European landmass. The current climate appears to be highly suitable for fasciolosis throughout the European Union with the e

Modelling the ecological niche of hookworm in Brazil based on climate.

The distribution of hookworm in schistosomiasis-endemic areas in Brazil was mapped based on climate suitability. Known biological requirements of hookworm were fitted to data in a monthly long-term normal climate grid (18 x 18 km) using geographical information systems. Hookworm risk models were produced using the growing degree day (GDD) water budget (WB) concept. A moisture-adjusted model (MA-GDD) was developed based on accumulation of monthly temperatures above a base temperature of 15 °C (below which there is no lifecycle progression of Necator americanus) conditional on concurrent monthly
