Persistence and decontamination of surrogate radioisotopes in a model drinking water distribution system.

Contamination of a model drinking water system with surrogate radioisotopes was examined with respect to persistence on and decontamination of infrastructure surfaces. Cesium and cobalt chloride salts were used as surrogates for cesium-137 and cobalt-60. Studies were conducted in biofilm annular reactors containing heavily corroded iron surfaces formed under shear and constantly submerged in drinking water. Cesium was not detected on the corroded iron surface after equilibration with 10 and 100mgL(-1) solutions of cesium chloride, but cobalt was detected on corroded iron coupons at both initia

Application of radioisotopes in column chromatography on substituted celluloses--II. The separation of gold from silver, iron and other metals.

The chromatographic behaviour of several metals has been studied on columns of natural and substituted celluloses, by using radioisotopes. It has been found that gram and nanogram amounts of gold are not adsorbed on natural cellulose, and consequently gold can be separated from nanogram amounts of silver, iron, zinc, cadmium, chromium, manganese and cobalt. Gold has a limited tendency to form complexes with the functional groups of the celluloses, but the other metals mentioned formed very stable complexes. The results have also been compared with those obtained for mercury.

A national survey of radioisotope applications in Saudi Arabia.

OBJECTIVE: Radioisotopes play an important role in healthcare, industry, scientific research, and technological development. However, information on their utilization patterns, supply-chain challenges, radiation safety practices, and workforce development needs in Saudi Arabia remains limited. This study aimed to characterize radioisotope applications across major sectors, assess supply and safety-related challenges, and identify priorities for strengthening the resilience and sustainability of radioisotope use in the Kingdom. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted amon

Estimation and comparison of integral dose to target and organs at risk in three-dimensional computed tomography image-based treatment planning of carcinoma uterine cervix with two high-dose-rate brachytherapy sources: 60Co and 192Ir.

BACKGROUND: Iridium-192 (192Ir) has been a widely accepted radioisotope for high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy. Recently, Cobalt-60 (60Co) radioisotope with a longer half-life (5.26 years) has been gaining popularity due to economic and logistical reasons as compared with the traditional 192Ir. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the integral dose (ID) to the target and organs at risk (OARs) with two HDR brachytherapy sources in brachytherapy treatment of carcinoma uterine cervix to find appropriate HDR radioisotopes for clinical benefit. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospect

Nickel, cobalt and chromium-induced cytotoxicity and intracellular accumulation in human hacat keratinocytes.

Nickel, cobalt and chromium can induce allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and may provoke irritant reactions in the skin. This study aimed at investigating cytotoxicity and cell viability along with intracellular metal accumulation in HaCaT human keratinocytes exposed to soluble forms of nickel, cobalt or chromium. The EC50 (24 h) values as detected by MTT test were 30 microM for sodium chromate (Na2CrO4), 475 microM for cobalt chloride (CoCl2) and 600 microM for nickel chloride (NiCl2). Chromium chloride (CrCl3) was not toxic up to 1 mM. No clear effects were observed after 4 h, but 24-h treat

[Radiometric studies of eye tissues in experimental cobalt intoxication].

Accumulation of cobalt in eye tissues were examined in rabbits which received the radioactive isotope 60Co Cl2. The studies revealed that this metal is accumulated at first in iris, choroid and ciliary body and, in smaller amounts, in cornea, sclera and retina. The least amounts of cobalt were found in lens. The contents of uveal tract was comparable with that found in heart and lungs, i.e. the organs in which lesions are the most frequent in cobalt intoxication.

Metallopharmaceuticals in Therapy - A New Horizon for Scientific Research.

Coordination chemistry offers much scope for the design of novel and therapeutic agents, including metallopharmaceuticals. The widespread use of metal complexes as effective pharmaceuticals, e.g. cancer therapeutic, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic drugs or antimicrobial and diagnostic agents, demonstrates that the cytotoxicity of metal ions can be finely controlled via the appropriate choice of ligands. The successful targeting of radioisotopes again depends on the ligand design and metal oxidation state. The complexes of platinum, ruthenium, cobalt, copper and other d-block metal ions have be
