Towards an experimental cognitive science of CBT.

The increasing focus on cognitive processes as therapeutic targets has not yet been matched by a cognitive science base sufficiently developed to guide clinical practice. It is argued that the papers in this special issue represent evidence of progress towards this desirable goal. Collectively, they illustrate research techniques aimed at specifying the nature of cognitive operations likely to increase the risk of emotional disorders, and the introduction of experimental methods for their modification. Emergent themes include the suggestion that negative thought content, such as that experienc

The Role of Cognitive Sophistication in Science Capital.

Science capital, a collection of science-related forms of capital, promotes access to and utilization of scientific information, which is integral in a time of flourishing anti-science attitudes. Nonetheless, it is not yet known which individual-level characteristics are associated with science capital. The present study links sociological concepts of science capital to the psychological study of individual differences by examining the role of cognitive sophistication in science capital. Participants (n = 146) completed an online survey. To assess cognitive sophistication, we used measures ass

Amyloid PET and cognitive decline in cognitively normal individuals: the SCIENCe project.

We examined the relationships between amyloid-β PET and concurrent and longitudinal cognitive performance in 107 cognitively normal individuals with subjective cognitive decline (age: 64 ± 8 years, 44% female, Mini-Mental State Examination score 29 ± 1). All underwent 90-minute dynamic [18F]florbetapir PET scanning and longitudinal neuropsychological tests with a mean follow-up of 3.4 ± 3.0 years. Receptor parametric mapping was used to calculate [18F]florbetapir binding potential (BPND), and we performed linear mixed models to assess the relationships between global [18F]florbetapir BPND and

Not every model in cognitive science is (or should be) mechanistic.

Haueis and Colaço (H&C) label all models as cognitive. However, just because cognitive science is so-called doesn't mean that all models are. When type differences are ignored, an argument runs the risk of prescribing a monist modeling strategy. In their case: mechanistic. Such a prescription is empirically inadequate and overly restrictive, as modeling in cognitive science relies on many modeling types.

Subjective Cognitive Impairment Cohort (SCIENCe): study design and first results.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to describe the Subjective Cognitive Impairment Cohort (SCIENCe) study design, to cross-sectionally describe participant characteristics, and to evaluate the SCD-plus criteria. METHODS: The SCIENCe is a prospective cohort study of subjective cognitive decline (SCD) patients. Participants undergo extensive assessment, including cerebrospinal fluid collection and optional amyloid positron emission tomography scan, with annual follow-up. The primary outcome measure is clinical progression. RESULTS: Cross-sectional evaluation of the first 151 participants (age 64 ± 8, 44% fe

Integrating science, practice and reflexivity--cognitive therapy with driving phobia.

The scientist-practitioner model has long been espoused within cognitive behavioural psychotherapy. The study includes an evaluation of the efficacy of cognitive therapy for driving phobia. Assessment, formulation and practical treatment of this common problem are also reported. Self-report measures evaluated results. Eight of the 10 consecutive cases improved significantly and reported that the intervention was acceptable. A reflexive analysis of the research findings and the influences on the first author's practice as a researcher and practitioner are also explored. Recommendations for futu

Science Teachers' Perceptions and Cognitive Structures About Skill-Based Questions.

The study investigates how Turkish science teachers view and understand skill-based questions (SBQs). SBQs aim to assess higher-order cognitive skills, such as critical thinking and problem-solving, in line with global standards like PISA and TIMSS. The data collected via the Word Association Test (WAT) revealed teachers' conceptual frameworks and attitudes toward SBQs. The most frequently associated terms were 'cognitive based' and 'culturally context consistency'. Teachers expressed mixed perceptions, with concerns about SBQs' alignment with international standards, literacy, validity, and t

Subjective cognitive decline and self-reported sleep problems: The SCIENCe project.

We aim to investigate the frequency and type of sleep problems in memory clinic patients with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and their association with cognition, mental health, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers. Three hundred eight subjects (65 ± 8 years, 44% female) were selected from the Subjective Cognitive Impairment Cohort (SCIENCe) project. All subjects answered two sleep questionnaires, Berlin Questionnaire (sleep apnea) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (sleep quality) and underwent a standardized memory clinic work-up. Representation in natural and artificial agents: an embodied cognitive science perspective.

The goal of the present paper is to provide an embodied cognitive science view on representation. Using the fundamental task of category learning, we will demonstrate that this perspective enables us to shed new light on many pertinent issues and opens up new prospects for investigation. The main focus of this paper is on the prerequisites to acquire representations of objects in the real world. We suggest that the main prerequisite is embodiment which allows an agent--human, animal or robot--to manipulate its sensory input such that invariances are generated. These invariances, in turn, are t

Neural and Cognitive Underpinnings of Counterintuitive Science and Math Reasoning in Adolescence.

Reasoning about counterintuitive concepts in science and math is thought to require suppressing naive theories, prior knowledge, or misleading perceptual cues through inhibitory control. Neuroimaging research has shown recruitment of pFC regions during counterintuitive reasoning, which has been interpreted as evidence of inhibitory control processes. However, the results are inconsistent across studies and have not been directly compared with behavior or brain activity during inhibitory control tasks. In this fMRI study, 34 adolescents (aged 11-15 years) answered science and math problems and

The Intersection of Cognitive Ability and HIV: A Review of the State of the Nursing Science.

Neurocognitive problems have been endemic to the HIV epidemic since its beginning. Four decades later, these problems persist, but currently, they are attributed to HIV-induced inflammation, the long-term effects of combination antiretroviral therapy, lifestyle (i.e., physical activity, drug use), psychiatric, and age-associated comorbidities (i.e., heart disease, hypertension). In many cases, persons living with HIV (PLWH) may develop cognitive problems as a function of accelerated or accentuated normal aging and lifestyle rather than HIV itself. Nonetheless, such cognitive impairments can in

State of the Science: Culturally Adapted Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Asian Americans.

Asian Americans are proportionately the fastest-growing racial group in the United States yet remain among the least likely to seek mental health services, often facing significant cultural and structural barriers. This state-of-the-science review synthesizes existing research on culturally adapted psychotherapy, with a focus on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for Asian American populations. Meta-analytic findings suggest that culturally adapted interventions, particularly those that utilize deep structural adaptations (e.g., those that incorporate cultural values, beliefs and worldviews),

From Puzzle to Progress: How Engaging With Neurodiversity Can Improve Cognitive Science.

In cognitive science, there is a tacit norm that phenomena such as cultural variation or synaesthesia are worthy examples of cognitive diversity that contribute to a better understanding of cognition, but that other forms of cognitive diversity (e.g., autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder/ADHD, and dyslexia) are primarily interesting only as examples of deficit, dysfunction, or impairment. This status quo is dehumanizing and holds back much-needed research. In contrast, the neurodiversity paradigm argues that such experiences are not necessarily deficits but rather are natural refle

Understanding depressive rumination from a cognitive science perspective: the impaired disengagement hypothesis.

Persisting negative thoughts are considered a hallmark of depression. Recent information-processing approaches have begun to uncover underlying mechanisms of depressive rumination. Despite marked advances in this area, there is a lack of integration between psychopathology and cognitive (neuro) science research. We propose the 'impaired disengagement' hypothesis as a unifying framework between both approaches. The core tenet of our model is that prolonged processing of self-referent material is due to impaired attentional disengagement from negative self-referent information. We discuss empiri

Experimental pain processing in individuals with cognitive impairment: current state of the science.

Cognitive impairment (CI) can develop during the course of ageing and is a feature of many neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. Many individuals with CI have substantial, sustained, and complex health care needs, which frequently include pain. However, individuals with CI can have difficulty communicating the features of their pain to others, which in turn presents a significant challenge for effective diagnosis and treatment of their pain. Herein, we review the literature on responsivity of individuals with CI to experimental pain stimuli. We discuss pain responding across a large num

Publication and other reporting biases in cognitive sciences: detection, prevalence, and prevention.

Recent systematic reviews and empirical evaluations of the cognitive sciences literature suggest that publication and other reporting biases are prevalent across diverse domains of cognitive science. In this review, we summarize the various forms of publication and reporting biases and other questionable research practices, and overview the available methods for probing into their existence. We discuss the available empirical evidence for the presence of such biases across the neuroimaging, animal, other preclinical, psychological, clinical trials, and genetics literature in the cognitive scie

Science of Learning Strategy Series: Article 8, Managing Cognitive Load to Maximize Learning.

The science of learning (learning science) is an interprofessional field that concerns itself with how the brain learns and remembers important information. Learning science has compiled a set of evidence-based strategies, such as distributed practice, retrieval practice, interleaving, elaboration, and contextual learning, which are quite relevant to continuing professional development (CPD). Spreading out study and practice separated by cognitive breaks (distributed practice), testing oneself to check mastery and memory of previously learned information (retrieval practice), mixing the learni
