Resistance of eels (Gymnothorax) to the venom of sea kraits (Laticauda colubrina): a test of coevolution.

Eels of the genus Gymnothorax from the Pacific are selectively preyed upon by banded sea kraits (Laticauda colubrina) and have been reported to sustain massive doses of sea krait venom without ill effect. By contrast, the present study found that Gymnothorax moringa from the Caribbean, where no sea snakes occur, are sensitive to sea krait venom, with doses as low as 0.01 mg dry wt of venom/kg wet wt of eel resulting in signs of envenomation, and doses as small as 0.1 mg/kg proving to be lethal. These observations suggest that the resistance of Pacific Gymnothorax to sea krait venom results fro

Active Flavonoids from Colubrina greggii var. greggii S. Watson against Clinical Isolates of Candida spp.

Candida albicans is the most commonly implicated agent in invasive human fungal infections. The disease could be presented as minimal symptomatic candidemia or can be fulminant sepsis. Candidemia is associated with a high rate of mortality and high healthcare and hospitalization costs. The surveillance programs have reported the distribution of other Candida species reflecting the trends and antifungal susceptibilities. Previous studies have demonstrated that C. glabrata more frequently presents fluconazole-resistant strains. Extracts from Mexican plants have been reported with activity a

Mycorrhizal technology and phosphorus in the production of primary and secondary metabolites in cebil (Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan) seedlings.

BACKGROUND: The application of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can increase the growth and concentration of primary and secondary metabolites in several plant species. Cebil (Anadenanthera colubrina), a medicinal plant, benefits from mycorrhizal association, but the influence of the symbiosis on the production of its bioactive compounds is unknown. In this study the effect of mycorrhizal inoculation and phosphorus (P) supply on the production of primary and secondary metabolites in cebil seedlings was determined. RESULTS: The production of proteins and carbohydrates in terms of both concen

A bite by the emerald snake, Hapsidophrys smaragdinus Schlegel, 1837 (Colubridae, Colubrinae) causing atopic eczema with comments on the formal documentation of non-front-fanged snakebites.

The mixed quality evidence about non-front-fanged snake bites has included unsupported speculation and presumption; the possible role of atopy and/or primary hypersensitivity have often been prematurely discounted. Described is a medically insignificant bite by a captive African emerald snake, Hapsidophrys smaragdinus Schlegel, 1837 (Colubridae, Colubrinae) that caused the development of moderate Type IV hypersensitivity; the 44-year-old male victim experienced persistent pruritis and an erythematous bite site maculopapular dermatitis that slowly resolved and required 6 days for full resolutio

Local envenoming by the coinsnake or Asian racer, Hemorrhois nummifer and mountain racer or leopard snake, Hemorrhois ravergieri (Serpentes: Colubridae, Colubrinae) in Iran: A reminder of the importance of species identification in the medical management of snakebites.

In Iran, there are approximately 4500-6500 snakebites per year, but fortunately only 3-9 of these are fatal. However, in some population centers such as Kashan city (Isfahan Province, central Iran), approximately 80% of snakebites are attributed to "non-venomous" snakes that are often comprised of several species of non-front-fanged snakes (NFFS). NFFS comprise a diverse group that constitute approximately 2900 species belonging to an estimated 15 families. We report here two cases of local envenoming from H. ravergieri, and one from H. nummifer that occurred in Iran. The clinical effects cons

Analysis of Colubroidea snake venoms by liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry: evolutionary and toxinological implications.

The evolution of the venomous function of snakes and the diversification of the toxins has been of tremendous research interest and considerable debate. It has become recently evident that the evolution of the toxins in the advanced snakes (Colubroidea) predated the evolution of the advanced, front-fanged delivery mechanisms. Historically, the venoms of snakes lacking front-fanged venom-delivery systems (conventionally grouped into the paraphyletic family Colubridae) have been largely neglected. In this study we used liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (LC/MS) to analyze a large numbe

An immunocytochemical study of endocrine pancreas of snakes.

The pancreas from eleven species of snakes representing both advanced and primitive families has been investigated for the presence of eleven regulatory peptides reported to occur in the mammalian endocrine pancreas. Of the eleven peptides studied, insulin, pancreatic glucagon and somatostatin were present in endocrine cells within the islets of all the species investigated. The neuropeptide, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, was located within nerve terminals innervating the islets in the Boidinae, Colubrinae, Elaphidae and Crotalidae but absent from the Natricinae investigated. No immunorea

Enhancement of the antibiotic activity of aminoglycosides by extracts from Anadenanthera colubrine (Vell.) Brenan var. cebil against multi-drug resistant bacteria.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of ethanol (EEAC) and hexane (HFAC) extracts from the stem bark of Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan var. cebil alone or in combination with aminoglycosides against multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the extracts were determined by using microdilution assay. For the evaluation of extracts as modulators of antibiotic resistance, MICs of neomycin and amikacin were determined in presence or absence of each compound at sub-inhibitory concentrations. Both EEAC and HFAC did not show ant

Fatal Sea Snake Envenomation.

A 23-year-old man working on a prawn trawler off the Northern Australian coast was bitten on the right hand by a black-banded sea snake (Laticauda colubrina), resulting in the rapid onset of ptosis, blurred vision, and respiratory difficulties with convulsions, loss of consciousness, and death. Resuscitation was unsuccessful. No antivenom was available because of the remote location. At autopsy, a small puncture wound was identified on the middle interphalangeal joint of the right little finger. No other significant abnormalities were detected. ANTIFUNGAL POTENTIAL OF PLANT SPECIES FROM BRAZILIAN CAATINGA AGAINST DERMATOPHYTES.

Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex, or Trichophyton spp. are the main etiologic agents of dermatophytosis, whose treatment is limited by the high cost of antifungal treatments, their various side effects, and the emergence of resistance amongst these species. This study evaluated the in vitro antidermatophytic activity of 23 crude extracts from nine plant species of semiarid vegetation (caatinga) found in Brazil. The extracts were tested at concentrations ranging from 1.95 to 1,000.0 mg/mL by broth microdilution assay against the reference strains T. rubrum ATCC 28189

Evolution of Three-Finger Toxin Genes in Neotropical Colubrine Snakes (Colubridae).

Snake venom research has historically focused on front-fanged species (Viperidae and Elapidae), limiting our knowledge of venom evolution in rear-fanged snakes across their ecologically diverse phylogeny. Three-finger toxins (3FTxs) are a known neurotoxic component in the venoms of some rear-fanged snakes (Colubridae: Colubrinae), but it is unclear how prevalent 3FTxs are both in expression within venom glands and more broadly among colubrine species. Here, we used a transcriptomic approach to characterize the venom expression profiles of four species of colubrine snakes from the Neotropics th

Exploring the clinical relevance of "Angico Gum": an effective biopolymer for topical protection of oesophageal mucosa in gastroesophageal reflux disease patients.

OBJECTIVES: Angico gum (AG) (Anadenanthera colubrina var. Cebil [Griseb.] Altschul) is utilized by some Brazilian communities to alleviate symptoms from gastroesophageal reflux disease. Here, we aimed to investigate the "in vitro" topical protective capacity of AG on human esophageal mucosa. METHODS: Biopsies of the distal esophageal mucosa were collected from 35 patients with heartburn (24 non-erosive and 11 with erosive oesophagitis (EE)) and mounted in Üssing chambers. AG was applied topically, followed by exposure with acid solution (pH 2.0 or pH 1.0), where transepithelial electrical res

Development of 21 polymorphic microsatellite markers for the black-banded sea krait, Laticauda semifasciata (Elapidae: Laticaudinae), and cross-species amplification for two other congeneric species.

The genus Laticauda (Reptilia: Elapidae), commonly known as sea kraits, is venomous marine amphibious snakes distributed throughout the south and southeast Asian islands and mostly found in coastal waters. To facilitate genetic studies, we have developed microsatellite loci for L. semifasciata using the 454 GS-FLX pyrosequencing technique. A total of 65,680 sequences containing a minimum of five repeat motifs were identified from 451,659 reads. Among 80 loci containing more than nine repeat units, 34 primer sets (42.5%) produced strong PCR products, of which 21 were polymorphic among 36 sample
