Oral language comprehension of young adults with low-level reading comprehension.

Significant difficulties in reading comprehension, despite attendance of compulsory schooling, are a worldwide phenomenon. While previous research on adults with low literacy skills focused primarily on their reading ability, less is known about their oral language skills. In this Brief Research Report, we present an investigation of the listening comprehension skills of a selected group of German-speaking young adults, whose reading comprehension is at a primary school level (n = 32, ages 16 to 19  years). In addition, the relationship between listening comprehension and reading comprehension

Exploring boundary conditions of the listening comprehension-reading comprehension discrepancy index.

Conversations about the nature of dyslexia and how dyslexia impacts reading and listening comprehension get to the heart of classification and identification models of dyslexia. Recently, this conversation has been expanded to include efforts to estimate the prevalence of dyslexia in the population through the introduction of a discrepancy index of listening comprehension and reading comprehension. This discrepancy index was proposed to serve as a proxy for dyslexia when estimating its prevalence in the population. Individuals whose reading comprehension is considerably lower than their listen

"Decoding versus comprehension": Brain responses underlying reading comprehension in children with autism.

Despite intact decoding ability, deficits in reading comprehension are relatively common in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, few neuroimaging studies have tested the neural bases of this specific profile of reading deficit in ASD. This fMRI study examined activation and synchronization of the brain's reading network in children with ASD with specific reading comprehension deficits during a word similarities task. Thirteen typically developing children and 18 children with ASD performed the task in the MRI scanner. No statistically significant group differences in functio

Pantomime comprehension and ideomotor apraxia.

In a prior study it was shown that apraxic patients with posterior infarctions that included the parietal lobe could not discriminate between gestures. In this study these observations were replicated using a nonverbal paradigm in which the subjects did not have to discriminate between gestures, but instead had to comprehend their meaning. Pantomimed acts on videotape were shown to six apraxic-aphasic patients, seven nonapraxic-aphasic patients, and six normal subjects. Four drawings were also shown, one of which matched the pantomime (for example, if the pantomime was of hammering, one drawin

Assessing comprehension of clinical research.

BACKGROUND: Comprehension and retention of study-related concepts by research subjects are understudied, particularly in certain areas of women's health such as menopausal hormone therapy (MHT). METHODS: In a multi-center trial of MHT, a 9-item participant comprehension questionnaire (PCQ) tested knowledge of key concerns relating to MHT at two study sites. The PCQ was administered at baseline. At study site1, PCQ was re-administered to assess information retention months later. Multivariable analyses assessed predictors of participant comprehension after adjusting for age, race, education, a

The relationship between comprehension of syntax and reading comprehension in cochlear implanted and hearing children.

OBJECTIVES: There is a large variation in the function of cochlear implanted children in language assessments. However, they usually have poorer performance in language abilities compared with their normal hearing peers. The purpose of the present study was to determine the relationship between syntax comprehension and reading comprehension in cochlear implanted and hearing children in the third to fifth grades of the elementary school and to identify the relationship between their reading comprehension and the age of receiving a cochlear implant as well as the duration of receiving speech the

Influences of individual, text, and assessment factors on text/discourse comprehension in oral language (listening comprehension).

We investigated the contributions of multiple strands of factors-individual characteristics (struggling reader status, working memory, vocabulary, grammatical knowledge, knowledge-based inference, theory of mind, comprehension monitoring), a text feature (narrative vs. expository genre), and question types (literal and inferential)-to one's performance on discourse comprehension in oral language (listening comprehension), using data from 529 second graders. Results from explanatory item response models revealed that substantial variance in listening comprehension was attributable to difference

Brain asymmetries in figurative language comprehension.

This chapter reviews the literature concerning the neural basis of three types of figurative expressions, namely, idioms, metaphors, and irony. Besides these three forms of language, which are the most investigated, many other types exist, differing in their linguistic structure and, consequently, in the corresponding comprehension processes. After defining the most common figurative expressions and showing how they differ in terms of linguistic properties, the chapter presents early studies that focused on the role of the right hemisphere (RH) in figurative language comprehension in general,

Cluster Headache and the Comprehension Paradox.

The chemoreflexes are important modulators of sympathetic activation. The peripheral chemoreceptors located in the carotid bodies respond primarily to hypoxaemia. Central chemoreceptors located in the region of the brainstem respond to hypercapnia. Activation of either the hypoxic or hypercapnic chemoreflex elicits both hyperventilation and sympathetic activation. During apnoea, when the inhibitory influence of stretch of the pulmonary afferents is eliminated, there is a potentiation of the sympathetic response to both hypoxia and hypercapnia. This inhibitory influence of the pulmonary afferen

Language comprehension in ape and child.

Previous investigations of the linguistic capacities of apes have focused on the ape's ability to produce words, and there has been little concern for comprehension. By contrast, it is increasingly recognized that comprehension precedes production in the language development of normal human children, and it may indeed guide production. It has been demonstrated that some species can process speech sounds categorically in a manner similar to that observed in humans. Consequently, it should be possible for such species to comprehend language if they have the cognitive capacity to understand word-

Predictive language comprehension in Parkinson's disease.

Verb and action knowledge deficits are reported in persons with Parkinson's disease (PD), even in the absence of dementia or mild cognitive impairment. However, the impact of these deficits on combinatorial semantic processing is less well understood. Following on previous verb and action knowledge findings, we tested the hypothesis that PD impairs the ability to integrate event-based thematic fit information during online sentence processing. Specifically, we anticipated persons with PD with age-typical cognitive abilities would perform more poorly than healthy controls during a visual world

Early Identification of Reading Comprehension Difficulties.

Most research on early identification of reading disabilities has focused on word reading problems and little attention has been given to reading comprehension difficulties. In this study, we investigated whether measures of language ability and/or response to language intervention in kindergarten uniquely predicted reading comprehension difficulties in third grade. A total of 366 children were administered a battery of screening measures at the beginning of kindergarten and progress monitoring probes across the school year. A subset of children also received a 26-week Tier 2 language interven

Listening comprehension across the adult lifespan.

OBJECTIVES: Although age-related declines in perceiving spoken language are well established, the primary focus of research has been on perception of phonemes, words, and sentences. In contrast, relatively few investigations have been directed at establishing the effects of age on the comprehension of extended spoken passages. Moreover, most previous work has used extreme-group designs in which the performance of a group of young adults is contrasted with that of a group of older adults and little if any information is available regarding changes in listening comprehension across the adult lif

[Speech therapy intervention in comprehension disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Most of the studies conducted on the subject of language pathologies have focused on the expressive aspect, but there is now generalised agreement on considering that most language disorders stem essentially from problems in the processes allowing input of verbal information provided by the environment. DEVELOPMENT: We analyse the processes that take place in a child's mind when faced with verbal production and the communicative intentions of others, in an attempt to understand the nature of their difficulties. CONCLUSIONS: The comprehension of oral language brings into play a

Connections Between Reading Comprehension and Word-Problem Solving via Oral Language Comprehension: Implications for Comorbid Learning Disabilities.

In this article, we discuss the approach adopted within the Vanderbilt University Learning Disabilities Innovation Hub, which focuses on students with higher-order comorbidity: students with concurrent difficulty with reading comprehension and word-problem solving. The aim of the Hub's Research Project is to test what we refer to as the higher-order comorbidity hypothesis: that language comprehension plays a critical role in reading comprehension and word-problem solving. In the Hub's study, we test the hypothesize that language comprehension offers a coordinated approach for improving both ou

Fluency Is Good, but Comprehension Is Better: The Impact of Fluency and Comprehension on Mathematical Word Problem Solving.

The impact of fluency and comprehension on mathematical word problem solving is explored using data on fifth-graders who took part in the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS). The Multiple Deficit Model (MDM) suggests that the impact of fluency and comprehension on mathematical word problem solving should be the same for students with and without dyslexia, even if they are at different levels in reading and mathematics. This study shows that students with poor fluency or comprehension score lower in word problems than typical readers. For all students with reading difficulties, the i

Grammatical comprehension in language and communication disorders.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) have traditionally been considered separate disorders, although some similarities and overlaps in certain aspects of language have been detected. In this paper, we compare the deficits in receptive grammar in these two disorders. We analyse the proportion of grammatical errors in relation to semantic complexity in 84 children divided into four groups: children with autism language impairment (ALI), with autism language normal (ALN), with DLD, and with typical development (TD), all groups with the same age of receptive voc

Multimodal measures of sentence comprehension in agrammatism.

Agrammatic or asyntactic comprehension is a common language impairment in aphasia. We considered three possible hypotheses about the underlying cause of this deficit, namely problems in syntactic processing, over-reliance on semantics, and a deficit in cognitive control. We tested four individuals showing asyntactic comprehension on their comprehension of syntax-semantics conflict sentences (e.g., The robber handcuffed the cop), where semantic cues pushed towards a different interpretation from syntax. Two of the four participants performed above chance on such sentences indicating that not al

Multimodal comprehension in left hemisphere stroke patients.

Hand gestures, imagistically related to the content of speech, are ubiquitous in face-to-face communication. Here we investigated people with aphasia's (PWA) processing of speech accompanied by gestures using lesion-symptom mapping. Twenty-nine PWA and 15 matched controls were shown a picture of an object/action and then a video-clip of a speaker producing speech and/or gestures in one of the following combinations: speech-only, gesture-only, congruent speech-gesture, and incongruent speech-gesture. Participants' task was to indicate, in different blocks, whether the picture and the word match
