Parental consanguinity in Hong Kong.

INTRODUCTION: Consanguineous union increases the risk of genetic disorders in offspring. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of parental consanguinity in Hong Kong, and its effects on pregnancy, perinatal, and child health outcomes. METHODS: Pregnant women in consanguineous unions attending an obstetrics unit at a public hospital in Hong Kong were retrospectively studied. Their pregnancy, perinatal, and child health outcomes were compared with an ethnicity-matched control group of pregnant women in non-consanguineous unions. RESULTS: The overall prevalence

Prenatal genetic counseling and consanguinity.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalence of consanguineous patients at a Western European prenatal genetic counseling clinic and to describe demographic as well as health-related characteristics of this patient group. METHOD: Retrospective analysis of 1964 primary consultations at the Prenatal Genetic Counseling Outpatient Clinic at the Medical University of Vienna General Hospital in Austria. Characteristics of consanguineous patients were compared with those of a control group of not-related unions. RESULTS: A total of 8.9% (174/1964) of all patients lived in a consanguineous union, meaning

Consanguinity and apnea of prematurity.

Consanguinity, marriage between relatives, has been associated with perinatal mortality and morbidity. Apnea of prematurity is defined as the cessation of breathing for longer than 20 seconds or that of any duration if accompanied by cyanosis and sinus bradycardia, for infants born before 37 weeks of gestation. The objective of the study was to examine the association between consanguinity and apnea of prematurity in Greater Beirut, an area having a relatively high prevalence rate of consanguineous marriages. The study was cross-sectional. Between September 1, 1998, and March 31, 2001, 21723 n

Incidence of inherited metabolic disorders in southern Israel: a comparison between consanguinity and non-consanguinity communities.

BACKGROUND: Inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) are group of rare monogenic diseases, usually derived from reduced or absent activity in a single metabolic pathway. Most of the IMDs are inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. The incidence of IMDs varies from country to country and within different ethnic groups, but data is still scarce. Consanguinity rate among populations is highly contributor factor for IMDs incidence. There are no reports comparing the incidence of IMD in consanguineous and non-consanguineous populations from the same geographic region with the same diagnostic capabi

Consanguinity as an Adjunct Diagnostic Tool.

History of consanguinity is important in monogenic disorders as it supports autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. This case report illustrates the use of homozygosity mapping using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) microarray data to identify the causative gene in a case with Warburg Micro syndrome (WARBM). This syndrome has non-specific features like microcephaly and cataract; etiological diagnosis based on clinical features is not possible. Four causative genes are known for WARBM syndrome. In such a situation of autosomal recessive disorders of heterogeneous etiologies, SNP microarray

Parental consanguinity and the Majewski syndrome.

We report a female infant with the Majewski syndrome, one of a group of conditions characterised by short ribs, polydactyly, dwarfism, and early neonatal death. This syndrome seems to be extremely rare, with only five well documented cases reported and, including this case, nine recorded in all. The Majewski syndrome is considered to be recessively inherited, and this report adds further support to this hypothesis, as the infant was born to consanguineous parents.

Consanguinity and disorders of sex development.

Disorders of sex development (DSD) are defined as 'congenital conditions in which the development of chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomical sex is atypical' [Lee et al., Pediatrics 2006;118:e488-e500]. Studies conducted in Western countries, with low rates of consanguinity, show that truly ambiguous genitalia have an estimated incidence of 1:5,000 births. There are indications that the prevalence of DSD is higher in endogamous communities. The incidence of ambiguous genitalia in Saudi Arabia has been estimated at 1:2,500 live births; whilst in Egypt, it has been estimated at 1:3,000 live births.

Health effects of consanguinity in Pondicherry.

Of 1000 pregnant women studied, consanguinity was observed in 30.8%, with a higher frequency among women from rural areas, and among Hindus. In the consanguineous group, first cousin marriages were present in 47.4%, and uncle niece marriages in 23.4% of women. Coefficient of inbreeding was highest in Harijans (0.0258), followed by non-Brahmins (0.0220) and Brahmins (0.0204). Fertility was not influenced by consanguinity. There was a significantly higher rate of still births and infant mortality in consanguineous matings as compared with non-consanguineous. Total morbidity was higher in the con

Consanguinity in Lebanon: prevalence, distribution and determinants.

The union of individuals with a common ancestor may lead to serious health consequences in their offspring. Consanguinity is high in Middle Eastern communities; it was around 26% in 1988. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of consanguinity in Beirut and other Lebanese regions, and its associated factors in different subgroups. The cross-sectional study was performed on a convenience sample of married women in Lebanon. The women were administered a standardized questionnaire in a face-to-face interview by independent enquirers. Among 1556 women, the overall prevalence o

Bipolar affective puerperal psychosis associated with consanguinity.

Most clinical and genetic evidence suggests that puerperal psychosis is closely related to bipolar affective disorder. During a linkage study of bipolar disorder we ascertained a British family in which puerperal psychosis was associated with consanguinity in three sisters. All three subjects had lifetime RDC diagnoses of bipolar I or manic disorder. An inbred brother also had bipolar I disorder. The only female member of the sibship to escape puerperal psychosis was outbred. These findings are consistent with several genetic models for bipolar disorder in this family. The most interesting pos

Reproductive pattern in consanguineous and non-consanguineous marriages in La Cabrera, Spain.

BACKGROUND: Among determinants of the structure of human populations, consanguineous marriages can be useful in determining to what extent they influence the genetic structure of the population. This knowledge may be gained by comparing the reproductive performance of related and non-related couples. The population studied, La Cabrera, is a mountainous region in the Leon province (north-western Spain). It includes four neighbouring municipalities with similar geographic, climatic and ecological features with 37 parishes occupying an area of 784.2 km(2), of which only 1.5% is arable. The number

Consanguinity and severity of primary congenital glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the severity of primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) among children born of consanguineous marriage. METHODS: In this case-control study, the medical records of unrelated consanguineous patients and unrelated nonconsanguineous (control) PCG patients seen at a single tertiary eye care facility were retrospectively reviewed. Those with a minimum of 5 years' follow-up were included. Data collected included age at presentation, corneal diameter, axial length, corneal haze at presentation and its persistence after surgery, need for repeat surgery, and final visual acuity. RESULT

Genomic Testing, Unexpected Consanguinity, and Adolescent Parents.

This case study about an infant with epidermolysis bullosa and his fourteen-year-old mother involves pediatric genomic testing and concerns about the adolescent parent's decision-making capacity. Four commentaries explore ethics issues in the case, including the following challenges: The current ethics guidelines regarding informed decision-making for genomic testing and return of results have been relatively silent on how to involve parents who are minors in decision-making on behalf of their children. This lack of guidance can be particularly difficult for physicians when genetic test result

Consanguinity and the Risk of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is the most common autoimmune thyroid disease that may lead to hypothyroidism due to progressive destruction of the thyroid. The etiology of HT is unclear. However, it is associated with multiple genetic predispositions. Consanguinity has been associated with an increased susceptibility to different inherited conditions. This study investigated the association between consanguinity and risk of HT for the first time. METHODS: Using a case-control study design, 298 HT patients were compared with two subject groups: (i) 299 participants with non-HT hypoth
