How does green finance accelerate the shift to energy revolution in developing countries?

This study aims to analyze the effects of green finance on the energy transition in 63 developing countries over the period 2000-2022. We address this assessment by using fixed effects (OLS and Driscoll-Kraay), followed by Lewbel (2012) and Kiviet (2020) instrumentation strategies to manage endogeneity. We found evidence that green finance enhances energy transition in developing countries, and that this effect is mediated by green technologies, human capital, and ecosystem conservation. Additional results reveal that economies with higher levels of government efficiency, political stability,

Does financial sector development mitigate power sector-based carbon dioxide emissions to establish environmental sustainability in BRICS?

Since the BRICS bloc accounts for around half of global carbon-dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with energy use. Thus, mitigating CO2 emissions is critically important not only to promote environmental sustainability across this bloc, but also for the sake of improving global environmental conditions as a whole. Accordingly, this study evaluates whether financial sector development is likely to enable the BRICS countries to curtail emissions associated with their power sectors, while controlling for their natural resource dependency, renewable energy adoption, institutional quality, and inte

Can efficient use of energy tackle the non-complementary linkages between natural resource reliance and environmental sustainability?

Natural resource-abundant countries often confront the issue of non-complementarity between natural resource reliance and environmental sustainability establishment. Hence, this study considers data from 38 natural resource-reliant countries from Africa and the Middle East to check if making efficient use of energy can tackle this non-complementary relationship. Precisely, this study explores whether energy efficiency gains would help these countries to directly reduce their per capita Carbon-dioxide (CO2) emission levels, and also indirectly exert emission-reducing impacts by offsetting CO2 e

A domain knowledge-enhanced lightweight transformer for automatic identification of land-use conflicts in territorial spatial planning texts.

Implicit information on land use conflicts in territorial spatial planning texts directly affects the coordination and implementability of planning schemes. Traditional manual interpretation approaches have low efficiency, high omission rates, and inadequate standardization, making them difficult to use for full-process review of massive multi-source planning texts under multi-plan integration. To address this problem, this study proposes a lightweight Transformer-based framework for automatic land use conflict identification by integrating domain prior features with deep semantic encoding. On the normative roles of biodiversity and naturalness in conservation.

Nature is an opaque concept. Consequently, the term biodiversity conservation has replaced nature conservation in most conservation contexts. We review the conceptual indeterminacies that plague the terms nature and natural but then show that comparable difficulties plague biodiversity. Then, we provide a new theory that sorts out the respective normative roles of naturalness and biodiversity within the ecocentric-intrinsic school of conservation. This is an elaboration on the conservation philosophy presented by Saltz and Cohen (2023). They presented a 3-tiered normative scheme: ultimate valu

Disclosure dilemmas: How environmental information influences corporate financing.

Difficult and costly financing has served as a significant constraint on enterprise development, particularly due to the elevated financing costs associated with heavily polluting enterprises. Currently, the capital market is imperfect, and the economic and legal systems are inadequate. Consequently, enterprises disclose less environmental information, or information of low quality, leading to asymmetric information in the market. Investors will certainly curtail their ventures, which increases capital costs, aggravating the problem of financing constraints in the market. This paper considers

Environmental Vertical Management Reform and the strategic response of corporate green innovation.

We examine whether strengthened regulatory independence promotes substantive green innovation or instead results in a decoupling between observable green innovation responses and underlying technological capability. The reform's impact is primarily concentrated in resource-based cities, where regulatory pressure is most salient. Specifically, while the reform increases green patent applications, it has no robust effect on patent grants or R&D investment. The joint pattern of increased environmental fines and no robust expansion in observed general government subsidies is consistent with the en

Optimizing Rainwater Harvesting Site and Structure Suitability Using Geospatial, Multi-Influencing Factor, and Analytic Hierarchy Process Approaches.

Rainwater harvesting (RWH) is an essential practice for water conservation, improved water resource management, and water-related hazards mitigation in mountainous areas. Selection of a suitable site and an appropriate structure of the RWH facility are vital for improving water availability and agricultural productivity under all circumstances, particularly due to climate change-related hydrological uncertainty. It is challenging to evaluate and analyze RWH sites across diverse conditions worldwide, particularly in remote, inaccessible mountainous areas where these sites have significant impac

How investment and technological innovation interact with resource rents to affect environmental sustainability in MENA countries?

Countries need to explore novel strategies that support environmental sustainability while preserving economic stability, even as they struggle with the effects of climate change and the depletion of natural resources. This study aims to analyze how investment and technological innovation interact with oil and natural resource rents to affect environmental sustainability in MENA countries. Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) was adopted in the study because it offers unbiased, accurate, and efficient estimators of long-term connections by taking endogeneity bias and serial correlatio

Natural resources modulate the nexus between environmental shocks and human mobility.

In the context of natural resource degradation, migration can act as means of adaptation both for those leaving and those supported by remittances. Migration can also result from an inability to adapt in-situ, with people forced to move, sometimes to situations of worse or of the same exposure to environmental threats. The deleterious impacts of resource degradation have been proposed in some situations to limit the ability to move. In this contribution, we use remote sensed information coupled with population density data for continental Africa to assess quantitatively the prevalence of migra

Enhancing the SWAT model for creating efficient rainwater harvesting and reuse strategies to improve water resources management.

Rain barrels/cisterns are a type of green infrastructure (GI) practice that can help restore urban hydrology. Roof runoff captured and stored by rain barrels/cisterns can serve as a valuable resource for landscape irrigation, which would reduce municipal water usage and decrease runoff that other stormwater infrastructures need to treat. The expected benefits of rainwater harvesting and reuse with rain barrels/cisterns are comprehensive but neither systematically investigated nor well documented. A comprehensive tool is needed to help stakeholders develop efficient strategies to harvest rainwa

Socio-hydrological analysis: a new approach in water resources management in western Iran.

Human consumption patterns have a significant impact on the amount of available water. However, the human effect on water resources is perceived to have been poorly studied. For the effective management of water resources, social and hydrological components should be studied. To fill this gap, the aim of this study was to investigate the socio-hydrological system of the Gavshan Dam in western Iran. Therefore, the qualitative method and root cause analysis (RCA) were used to investigate the causes of the imbalance between water consumption and water resources. Root cause analysis was used to in

Unifying bright spots research for people and nature.

Understanding how systems thrive against the odds is increasingly important in an era of accelerating ecological and social change. Bright spots, cases that outperform expectations under local constraints, offer a lens for learning from success within broader patterns of decline. Yet progress in this field has been limited by inconsistent definitions, fragmented methods and the absence of an integrative framework for systematic learning and application. Here we synthesize more than 70 studies spanning ecology, conservation, resource use, food production and sustainability science to assess how

Enhancing vulnerability, reliability, and resilience of integrated green-grey networks via multi-objective optimization and multi-scale assessment of redundancy strategies.

Legacy drainage infrastructure increasingly fails to accommodate escalating runoff volumes induced by climate change. While Integrated Green-Grey Network (IGGN) have emerged as sustainable alternatives, existing research lacks a comprehensive assessment of redundancy strategies within these systems. To address this gap, this study proposes a multi-objective optimization framework using NSGA-II to balance Life Cycle Cost (LCC), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and rationality of system (Rat_Sys). The optimized IGGN are subsequently reinforced with redundant paths and parallel conduits, followed by

Understanding vulnerabilities and resilience in circular business ecosystems.

This study investigates the vulnerabilities that emerge in Circular Business Ecosystems (CBE) and their impact on ecosystem resilience. CBEs, characterized by collaborative networks of interdependent actors, are increasingly recognized as strategic approaches for achieving circular value propositions. However, these ecosystems are exposed to perturbations that can undermine their effectiveness and resilience. Drawing on a four-year qualitative, multiple-case study involving 19 firms across two distinct CBEs, this research adopts a vulnerability lens and socioecological and economic perspective

Is economic freedom a panacea for environmental sustainability? Global and regional evidence.

Environmental degradation continues to escalate globally, significantly threatening the world economy. The need to design and implement appropriate policies to address environmental degradation (CO2 emissions) has resulted in many studies examining the socioeconomic and institutional factors that affect CO2 emissions. While previous studies have examined various factors influencing CO2 emissions, there is limited evidence on how economic institutions impact it. This study explores the influence of economic institutions on CO2 emissions using panel data from 119 countries from 2000 to 2021 usin

Stress in mangrove forests: Early detection and preemptive rehabilitation are essential for future successful worldwide mangrove forest management.

Mangrove forest rehabilitation should begin much sooner than at the point of catastrophic loss. We describe the need for "mangrove forest heart attack prevention", and how that might be accomplished in a general sense by embedding plot and remote sensing monitoring within coastal management plans. The major cause of mangrove stress at many sites globally is often linked to reduced tidal flows and exchanges. Blocked water flows can reduce flushing not only from the seaward side, but also result in higher salinity and reduced sediments when flows are blocked landward. Long-term degradation of fu

Addressing water scarcity to support climate resilience and human health.

Water scarcity is projected to affect half of the world's population, gradually exacerbated by climate change. This article elaborates from a panel discussion at the 2023 United Nations Water Conference on "Addressing Water Scarcity to Achieve Climate Resilience and Human Health." Understanding and addressing water scarcity goes beyond hydrological water balances to also include societal and economic measures. We consider five categories of health impacts resulting from deteriorating water qualities and quantities: (1) water-related diseases and water for hygiene, (2) malnutrition and water fo
