Contextual F0 cues can outweigh talker F0 cues in fricative perception.

Listeners use information in the speech signal as well as linguistic and real-world knowledge to tackle the immense variability of speech. Here, we focus on the use of contextual and talker-bound fundamental frequency (F0) cues during the perception of voiceless fricatives' center of gravity (CoG). In Experiment 1, Dutch participants heard the sentence Nu komt het woord ?ok ("Now comes the word ?ok") where "?" denotes a fricative from a synthetic /s-ʃ/ continuum in three carrier F0 conditions (low, mid, high), and indicated whether they heard the high-CoG /sɔk/ "sock" or the low-CoG /ʃɔk/ "(to

Cues they use: clinicians' endorsement of risk cues in predictions of dangerousness.

Clinical predictions of violence are a necessary part of clinical practice despite extensive literature validating the use of actuarial rather than clinical prediction. The current study examined clinicians' use of risk cues in predictions of violence. Clinicians identified several risk cues as significant in clinical assessments of risk, including a history of assaults, hostility, medication noncompliance, paranoid delusions, presence of psychosis, and family problems. However, further results indicated that clinician-endorsed risk cues lack predictive power in the present sample.

Sensory modality of smoking cues modulates neural cue reactivity.

RATIONALE: Behavioral experiments have demonstrated that the sensory modality of presentation modulates drug cue reactivity. OBJECTIVES: The present study on nicotine addiction tested whether neural responses to smoking cues are modulated by the sensory modality of stimulus presentation. METHODS: We measured brain activation using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 15 smokers and 15 nonsmokers while they viewed images of smoking paraphernalia and control objects and while they touched the same objects without seeing them. RESULTS: Haptically presented, smoking-related stimuli i

Multiple axon guidance cues establish the olfactory topographic map: how do these cues interact?

Each primary olfactory neuron stochastically expresses one of approximately 1000 odorant receptors. The total population of these neurons therefore consists of approximately 1,000 distinct subpopulations, each of which are mosaically dispersed throughout one of four semi-annular zones in the nasal cavity. The axons of these different subpopulations are initially intermingled within the olfactory nerve. However, upon reaching the olfactory bulb, they sort out and converge so that axons expressing the same odorant receptor typically target one or two glomeruli. The spatial location of each of th

Prequit fMRI responses to pleasant cues and cigarette-related cues predict smoking cessation outcome.

INTRODUCTION: The reasons that some smokers find it harder to quit than others are unclear. Understanding how individual differences predict smoking cessation outcomes may allow the development of more successful personalized treatments for nicotine dependence. Theoretical models suggest that drug users might be characterized by increased sensitivity to drug cues and by reduced sensitivity to nondrug-related natural rewards. We hypothesized that baseline differences in brain sensitivity to natural rewards and cigarette-related cues would predict the outcome of a smoking cessation attempt. MET

Physical Cues Drive Chondrogenic Differentiation.

BACKGROUND: Cellular differentiation occurs in a complicated microenvironment containing multiple components including soluble factors and physical cues. In addition to biochemical composition, physical cues are also crucial in determining cellular behaviors. OBJECTIVE: To better understand the interaction between physical signals and cells, we discuss the effects of physical cues on cellular behaviors, especially chondrogenic differentiation in vitro. Furthermore, the mechanisms by which these physical signals are transmitted from the extracellular matrix into the cell are also considered.

Attentional capture by dynamic cues.

Attention orients to an object that abruptly onsets, because the object's appearance alters the visual scene. In this report, the question was whether there would, similarly, be attentional prioritization of an existing object that changes its dynamic status. Attention may be deployed immediately to the object because its new dynamic status, potentially, also could alter the visual environment. This report focused on the capture capacity of an object--made up of four spots--that abruptly began rotating, thereby endowing it with two dynamic features: motion-onset, apparent when the object trans

Multisensory cues improve sensorimotor synchronisation.

Synchronising movements with events in the surrounding environment is an ubiquitous aspect of everyday behaviour. Often, information about a stream of events is available across sensory modalities. While it is clear that we synchronise more accurately to auditory cues than other modalities, little is known about how the brain combines multisensory signals to produce accurately timed actions. Here, we investigate multisensory integration for sensorimotor synchronisation. We extend the prevailing linear phase correction model for movement synchronisation, describing asynchrony variance in terms

Spatially dynamic binaural cues have a larger influence on auditory stream segregation than static cues.

Auditory scene analysis is the process used to separate and integrate acoustic information into representations of auditory objects. Spatial cues play a critical role in this process, but questions remain regarding how these cues influence auditory stream segregation. The ABA stream segregation paradigm capitalizes on a bistable stimulus capable of eliciting perception of a single (integrated) auditory stream, or two separate (segregated) auditory streams with equal probability. Here, perceptual bistability was used to assess the effectiveness of interaural level (ILD), time (ITD), and correla

When less is more: single selfhood-related cues elicit higher selfhood ratings than multiple cues.

INTRODUCTION: In everyday social cognition, people reliably tend to anthropomorphize non-human agents or ascribe to them features associated with selfhood. In prior research, we showed that individuals often (over-)generalize from a single behavioral indicator of selfhood, such as learning ability or attentional sharing, to the assumption that other, unobserved indicators of selfhood are also present. This suggests that even minimal cues may be sufficient to activate a broader selfhood concept and its associated implications. METHOD: Here, we tested the prediction that single selfhood cues ar

The Presence of Chemical Cues Likely Alters Motivation, Rather than Perception of Weak Visual Cues.

Animals encounter information simultaneously, combining input from multiple sensory systems before responding behaviorally. When cues in different sensory modalities interact, they may have direct impacts on sensory perception, allowing the animal to perceive stimuli that it would otherwise have missed, or the cues may instead impact motivation, tightly honing the animal's focus onto a stimulus or distracting it. Here, we investigated how interacting chemical and visual cues affected behavior in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio). Chemical cues can enhance the visual perception of zebrafish directl

The familiar-size cue to depth under reduced-cue viewing conditions.

The familiar-size cue to perceived depth was investigated in five experiments. The stimuli were stationary familiar objects viewed monocularly under otherwise completely darkened visual conditions. Perceived depth was measured directly with the method of verbal report and indirectly with the head-motion procedure. Although the familiar-size cue influenced verbal reports of the distances of the objects, it did not determine perceived depth as assessed with the head-motion procedure. These findings support the claim that familiar size is not a major determinant of perceived depth, and that cogni

Psychopathy and gaze cueing.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Psychopathic traits - and especially callous affective features - have been linked to altered processing of others' emotional expressions, and to reduced attention to the eyes. Despite the importance of gaze cueing (i.e., the tendency to orient attention toward where someone else is looking) for social functioning, few studies have investigated relationships between psychopathic traits and gaze cueing, and whether facial emotional expression influence these relationships, obtaining mixed results. To address this gap, the present study aimed to evaluate associations b

Fluency as a Cue to Authenticity.

The quest for authenticity is a potent existential striving. Commonly defined as knowing and living in accordance with one's perceived "true self," we propose that authenticity may also be inferred from ambient feelings of fluency, or the subjective feeling of ease that corresponds to one's immediate experience, mental processing, or physical action. We report four studies (N = 1,465) supporting this idea. Study 1 shows that fluency during a recent activity predicts subjective authenticity beyond other relevant variables. Study 2 demonstrates that participants' recalled fluent experiences also

The shading cue in context.

The shading cue is supposed to be a major factor in monocular stereopsis. However, the hypothesis is hardly corroborated by available data. For instance, the conventional stimulus used in perception research, which involves a circular disk with monotonic luminance gradient on a uniform surround, is theoretically 'explained' by any quadric surface, including spherical caps or cups (the conventional response categories), cylindrical ruts or ridges, and saddle surfaces. Whereas cylindrical ruts or ridges are reported when the outline is changed from circular to square, saddle surfaces are never r

Vocal Cues to Male Physical Formidability.

Animal vocalizations convey important information about the emitter, including sex, age, biological quality, and emotional state. Early on, Darwin proposed that sex differences in auditory signals and vocalizations were driven by sexual selection mechanisms. In humans, studies on the association between male voice attributes and physical formidability have thus far reported mixed results. Hence, with a view to furthering our understanding of the role of human voice in advertising physical formidability, we sought to identify acoustic attributes of male voices associated with physical formidabi

Cues for Haptic Perception of Compliance.

For the perception of the hardness of compliant materials, several cues are available. In this paper, the relative roles of force/displacement and surface deformation cues are investigated. We have measured discrimination thresholds with silicone rubber stimuli of differing thickness and compliance. Also, the influence of the finger span is assessed. When compliance is expressed as the Young's modulus, the thresholds in the different conditions follow Weber's law with a Weber fraction of 15 percent. When the surface deformation cue was removed, thresholds more than trebled. Under the assumptio

Effects of self-relevant cues and cue valence on autobiographical memory specificity in dysphoria.

Reduced autobiographical memory specificity (rAMS) is a characteristic memory bias observed in depression. To corroborate the capture hypothesis in the CaRFAX (capture and rumination, functional avoidance, executive capacity and control) model, we investigated the effects of self-relevant cues and cue valence on rAMS using an adapted Autobiographical Memory Test conducted with a nonclinical population. Hierarchical linear modelling indicated that the main effects of depression and self-relevant cues elicited rAMS. Moreover, the three-way interaction among valence, self-relevance, and depressio

Decline in cue-provoked craving during cue exposure therapy for smoking cessation.

INTRODUCTION: Based on the principles of Pavlovian learning and extinction, cue exposure therapy (CET) involves repeated exposure to substance-associated cues to extinguish conditioned cravings and reduce the likelihood of relapse. The efficacy of CET is predicated on successful extinction, yet the process of extinction in CET trials has rarely been demonstrated. This study explored the extinction process using a cue-reactivity paradigm in smokers undergoing multiple CET sessions as part of a comprehensive smoking cessation treatment. METHODS: The sample comprised 76 moderately dependent, tre
