PROBLEM/CONDITION: Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which is transmissible by ingestion of fecally contaminated food or water. Cyclosporiasis is most common in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. In the United States, foodborne outbreaks of cyclosporiasis have been linked to various types of imported fresh produce (e.g., basil, raspberries, and snow peas). Validated molecular typing tools, which could facilitate detection and investigation of outbreaks, are not yet available for C. cayetanensis.
PERIOD COVERED: 2011-2015.

We compared the epidemiologic characteristics of cyclosporiasis and cryptosporidiosis in data from a cohort study of diarrhea in a periurban community near Lima, Peru. Children had an average of 0.20 episodes of cyclosporiasis/year and 0.22 episodes of cryptosporidiosis/year of follow-up. The incidence of cryptosporidiosis peaked at 0.42 for 1-year-old children and declined to 0.06 episodes/child-year for 5- to 9-year-old children. In contrast, the incidence of cyclosporiasis was fairly constant among 1- to 9-year-old children (0.21 to 0.28 episodes/child-year). Likelihood of diarrhea decrease

Cyclosporiasis, caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis, is a rare opportunistic infection, particularly in immunosuppressed patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Its clinical presentation may mimic IBD, with chronic diarrhea and anemia resistant to standard therapy. We report the case of a 24-year-old woman with ulcerative colitis (UC) and a history of liver transplantation, treated with vedolizumab and immunosuppressants. Despite endoscopic remission, she experienced persistent abdominal pain, diarrhea, and iron deficiency anemia. Escalation of biologic therapy was ineffective. After exc

Cyclosporiasis is an emerging worldwide infection caused by an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite, Cyclospora cayetanensis. In immunocompetent patients, it is mainly manifested by self-limited diarrhea, which is persistent and may be fatal in immunocompromised patients. The standard treatment for cyclosporiasis is a combination of two antibiotics, trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole. Gastrointestinal, haematologic and renal side effects were reported with this combination. Moreover, sulfa allergy, foetal anomalies and recurrence were recorded with no alternative drug treatment option. In

AbstractIn June 2026, Michigan identified a cyclosporiasis outbreak; the number of reported cases substantially exceeded the usual number of seasonal reports. As of July 22, 2026, 6065 cases had been reported across 69 of Michigan's 83 counties, with dates of illness onset ranging from May 10 through July 18, 2026. Food history data, obtained from 51.3% of patients, indicated that iceberg lettuce and consumption at one restaurant chain were potential exposure sources. This report describes Michigan's ongoing outbreak investigation.

The apicomplexan parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis causes seasonal foodborne outbreaks of the gastrointestinal illness cyclosporiasis. Prior to the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic, annually reported cases were increasing in the USA, leading the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to develop a genotyping tool to complement cyclosporiasis outbreak investigations. Thousands of US isolates and 1 from China (strain CHN_HEN01) were genotyped by Illumina amplicon sequencing, revealing 2 lineages (A and B). The allelic composition of isolates was examined at each locus. Two nuclear loci (CD

AIDS is characteristically associated with several intracellular enteric protozoan infections that often cause chronic and sometimes fatal intractable large-volume diarrhea. Until the AIDS epidemic, several of these parasitic infections were almost unknown as causes of human disease. This article reviews the diseases produced by cryptosporidia, isospora, cyclospora, and microsporidia in humans.

Cyclospora cayetanensis (C. cayetanensis), an opportunistic intracellular coccidian, is responsible for chronic debilitating diarrheal outbreaks possessing life-threatening penalties, especially in immunocompromised patients. The solemn therapeutic agents against cyclosporiasis are limited by their grave effects and high recurrence rate. The current study aimed to utilize greenly synthesized selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and evaluate their therapeutic efficacy on cyclosporiasis in immunosuppressed murine models. They were biosynthesized proficiently using Alcaligenes faecalis and characterize

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of cyclosporiasis is currently based on the microscopic detection of oocysts, which may provide invalid results. The availability of simple, objective immunological screening tests would facilitate epidemiological studies of cyclosporiasis. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify the antigens of Cyclospora cayetanensis oocysts and their validity in serodiagnosis.
METHODS: According to parasitological and molecular diagnoses, three study groups were specified. Group (G) I included 30 patients with cyclosporiasis, GII included 12 patients with other parasitic

Cyclosporiasis results from an infection of the small intestine by Cyclospora parasites after ingestion of contaminated food or water, often leading to gastrointestinal distress. Recent developments in temporally linking genetically related Cyclospora isolates demonstrated effectiveness in supporting epidemiological investigations. We used 'temporal-genetic clusters' (TGCs) to investigate reported cyclosporiasis cases in the United States during the 2021 peak-period (1 May - 31 August 2021). Our approach split 655 genotyped isolates into 55 genetic clusters and 31 TGCs. We linked two large mul

BACKGROUND: Cyclospora cayetanensis is a foodborne coccidian protozoan that causes prolonged, often relapsing watery diarrhea. Once considered largely a travel-associated infection, it has become a recurring cause of large, domestically acquired, produce-associated outbreaks in temperate countries. The 2026 US season was the largest on record and prompted a CDC Health Advisory, placing substantial numbers of solid organ transplant (SOT) and hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients at risk of exposure.
AIM: To provide a practical, transplant-specific approach to the diagnosis, treatment,

Cyclospora spp. is an important cause of traveler's diarrhea or water and food-borne diarrhoeal diseases. We present an interesting but rare case report of cyclosporiasis in a 51-year-old male who had undergone renal allograft transplant six years ago. He also had a past history of tuberculosis, cytomegalovirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and hepatitis C infection and was being treated with immunosuppressants. The patient had a prolonged history of gastrointestinal manifestations with recent acute onset of watery diarrhea associated with abdominal cramps. Sto

BACKGROUND: Transmission dynamics of Cyclospora cayetanensis in endemic areas and the factors associated with soil contamination remain unclear. The effects of environmental factors on Cyclospora have been insufficiently studied, particularly in South America, thus a Venezuelan community was studied to profile risk factors for infection.
METHODS: A cross-sectional stool survey of 732 individuals was conducted. For Cyclospora screening, an acid-fast-stained smear of formalin-ethyl acetate concentrate and ultraviolet (UV) epifluorescence examination of a wet mount were used. Water (n=14), soil

In early June 2023, the Alabama Department of Public Health identified five laboratory-confirmed cyclosporiasis case reports with a common patient exposure of eating at one Mexican-style restaurant. Common signs of cyclosporiasis include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and loss of appetite. Although most illnesses are self-limited, antibiotic treatment can prevent relapsing illness. Onset of illness for the initial five patients occurred during May 26-30. An outbreak investigation was initiated on June 7. Routine case investigations and case finding through the restaurant's food delivery s
