The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) can be used to investigate suspected meningococcal infection, with rapid results. We became aware that Birmingham Health Authority was not being informed about certain patients on whom meningococcal PCR had been performed. To establish whether notification was overlooked in some patients with suspected meningococcal disease, or whether PCR was performed on patients in whom it was thought meningococcal disease was unlikely, we compared numbers of patients notified to us over six months who had PCR with numbers of patients not notified who had PCR. Records of notification in cases of eight infectious diseases in the "Servei Territorial de Salut Publica" of the Province of Barcelona, Spain, between 1982 and 1986 were reviewed. Time from onset of symptoms to notification, time from notification to completion of data collection, and time from onset to completion of the case investigation were analyzed. For the period from onset to notification, the shortest mean was registered for meningococcal infection (6.31 days) and the longest was for pulmonary tuberculosis (54.79 days). For time from notification to complete investigation, the shortes

Jenny Rose was a paediatric community nurse who regularly visited a child with a chronic lung condition who was being nursed at home. On one visit she noticed that the child's mother, Jane, appeared to be very pale and thin and was told that the mother had a severe gastric disorder with diarrhoea. From the description of the illness, Jenny thought that Jane might be suffering from typhoid. Jane worked as a cook in a restaurant, was unwilling to seek medical advice and intended going to work that night. Jenny was concerned that Jane could have a serious notifiable infectious disease and therefo

The development of a Brazilian National Surveillance System in 1975 led to a compulsory reporting of selected infectious diseases aiming to reduce the burden of these events in the country. However, shifts in the epidemiology of these diseases associated with modern life style, demand constant revision of surveillance activities. In this manuscript we present the epidemiology, trends and differential diagnosis of the following compulsory notifiable diseases in Brazil: Aids, dengue fever, hanseniasis, American tegumentary leishmaniasis, measles, rubella and congenital rubella syndrome and syphi

INTRODUCTION: Infectious disease surveillance in Victoria, Australia is based upon a legislated requirement for doctors and laboratories to notify suspected or diagnosed cases of specific conditions to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The department undertakes regular audits of notification practices in Victoria typically every two years. The objective of this particular audit was to describe notification practices in 2016 and 2017, assess the effect of enhanced surveillance programs (ESPs) on Indigenous status data completeness and provide a baseline assessment that can be

Effective public health control of meningococcal disease (meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia) is dependent on complete, accurate and speedy notification. Using capture-recapture techniques this study assesses the completeness, accuracy and timeliness of meningococcal notification in a health authority. The completeness of meningococcal disease notification was 94.8% (95% confidence interval 93.2% to 96.2%); 91.2% of cases in 2001 were notified within 24 hours of diagnosis, but 28.0% of notifications in 2001 were false positives. Clinical staff need to be aware of the public health implic

OBJECTIVE: To investigate if notification by the laboratories of a number of Group B diseases (meningococcal disease, whooping cough and hepatitis A) which according to the Communicable Disease Law of 999 must be reported to the local public health authority, would increase the number of reports and the speed at which the reports were made.
DESIGN: Comparative study.
METHOD: In the participating regions (Den Bosch and north-east Brabant) it was decided that the laboratories would notify the authorities of cases ofmeningococcal disease, whooping cough and hepatitis A. The notifications were c

INTRODUCTION: Infectious disease notification practices in Victoria were reviewed to identify areas for potential improvement.
METHODS: Confirmed or probable cases of certain infectious diseases required to be notified to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Victoria in 2013, excluding elevated blood lead, foodborne or water-borne illness with 2 or more related cases and chlamydial infection, were analysed according to: notification source of doctor ± laboratory vs. laboratory-only; routine follow-up by public health staff for selected conditions vs. not routine; priority for In

Epidemiological vigilance in Navarre covers 34 transmissible diseases, whose notification is compulsory, and epidemic outbreaks of any aetiology. Notification is carried out on a weekly basis by the doctors from paediatrics, primary and specialised level who suspect or diagnose any of these diseases. In 2003, 75.0% of all the possible notification reports (a weekly report for each doctor) were received, a percentage that has improved in the last five year period. In 2003, Influenza reached a rate of 48.9 cases per 1,000 inhabitants (Epidemic Index, EI: 0.91), showing an epidemic peak in Januar

A country-wide survey of consultants in communicable disease control (CCDCs) was conducted to assess the use of Section 16 of the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act, 1984 for the local notification of infectious diseases. A response rate of 84% was achieved. The results indicate that, although the power is generally little used, 24 local authorities have locally notifiable diseases and at least eight CCDCs are actively considering the use of Section 16. The power may be particularly valuable as an additional tool in the surveillance of 'clinically diagnosed' and locally troublesome infecti

Since 1998, the Epidemiological Survelliance System of Navarra has included the notification of 34 transmissible infectious diseases, to which are added epidemic outbreaks of any aetiology and cause. Reporting to the system is carried out on a weekly basis by every doctor who suspects, or diagnoses, any of these processes. In our autonomous community, Diseases of Compulsory Notification (DCN) are reported using standardised forms on a weekly basis to the Section of Infectious Diseases and Control of Outbreaks of the Public Health Institute. Notification is made by the doctors and/or paediatric

BACKGROUND: Partner notification has been practiced for decades, with substantial resources directed towards it, and with little evidence on whether it has made a public health impact on disease transmission. Most of the evaluations were not randomized controlled trials, and were conducted in the United States, prior to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. There are reasons to question whether partner notification for gonorrhoea and chlamydia is applicable to HIV. It is also questionable whether interventions for the developed world are applicable to the developing world.
OBJECTIVES: This review aims to co

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidiosis is a gastrointestinal disease affecting many people worldwide. Disease incidence is often unknown and surveillance of human cryptosporidiosis is installed in only a handful of developed countries. A genetic marker that mirrors disease incidence is potentially a powerful tool for monitoring the two primary human infected species of Cryptosporidium.
METHODS: We used the molecular epidemiological database with Cryptosporidium isolates from ZoopNet, which currently contains more than 1400 records with their sampling nations, and the names of the host species from whi

In May 1991 a decree supplementing the federal Epidemic Law concerning the mandatory notification of communicable diseases was implemented by the Ministry of Health in Saxony-Anhalt. This was updated and newly implemented in 1997. With implementation of the national Protection against Infection Act in 2001 further amendment of the state regulation (published in April 2005) be came necessary. The following diseases or laboratory evidence of the underlying pathogens, respectively, will now be notifiable with inclusion of the affected individual's name: aseptic meningitis, mumps, rubella, varicel

In Victoria, legislation clearly makes the notification of clinical or confirmed cases of meningococcal disease mandatory. Statistical modelling suggests that meningococcal disease is significantly under-notified, and that incorrect codes might be being ascribed to some in-patient episodes. The aims of this study were (i) to test the assumption that cases identified as non-notified cases were true cases, and (ii) to identify the reasons for non-detection on the hospital separation database and non-notification to the infectious diseases unit. Of 26 cases not identified on the in-patient datase

The System of Infectious Disease Notification (I.D.N.) encompasses the notification of 41 infectious transmissible diseases to which are added epidemic outbreaks of any etiology or cause. In Navarra, the I.D.N.'s are reported to the Section of Vigilance and Epidemiological Control of the Public Health Institute. A sharp increase of alimentary toxic-infections is observed due to two community outbreaks produced by Salmonella enteritidis that affected 410 persons. The incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis, 15.37 cases per 100,000 inhabitants has remained at the same levels as previous years and wi

OBJECTIVE: To better understand preferences and practices regarding partner notification of sexually transmitted infection (STI) among female, African-American adolescents.
METHODS: Participants completed a questionnaire and STI testing at baseline. Those diagnosed with Chlamydia or gonorrhea were recruited for a follow-up study, involving another questionnaire and repeat STI testing after three months.
RESULTS: At baseline, most participants (85.1%) preferred to tell their partner about an STI diagnosis themselves instead of having a health care provider inform him, and 71.0% preferred to b
