One hundred and thirty-two patients known or suspected of allergy to house dust were skin-tested with pure extracts of four varieties of dust mites. The results show that both Dermatophagoides culinae and D. pteronyssinus probably played important parts in sensitizing susceptible people, as did Glycyphagus destructor and G. domesticus in some cases. In some patients these results enabled successful desensitization against the dust to be carried out, and for corticosteroid therapy to be stopped. Sensitization to house dust mites, storage mites and other common inhalation allergens was studied in 144 farmers using SPT and RAST. The study population was selected from a random sample of 808 farmers and consisted of 47 persons who had declared themselves to suffer from asthma, 63 persons who had reported respiratory symptoms, and 34 healthy persons without respiratory symptoms. After reviewing the experience of various authors we applied the Basophil Degranulation Test (BDT) in the study of sensitization to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, so as to evaluate its diagnostic use. Sequential measurements were made of total and specific serum IgE concentrations in an adult patient with severe atopic eczema. Up to recently the post-mortem diagnosis of anaphylaxis has been based solely on circumstantial evidence. BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) discontinuation data in children remain scarce.
OBJECTIVE: We sought for differences in the clinical efficacy of 3 vs. 5 yr of SCIT in children with dust mite respiratory allergy.
METHODS: We performed a 5-yr, phase IV prospective study. After the first year, the patients were randomized to 3 (IT3) or 5 yr of treatment (IT5).
