Sustainable Elastomers from Renewable Biomass.

Sustainable elastomers have undergone explosive growth in recent years, partly due to the resurgence of biobased materials prepared from renewable natural resources. However, mounting challenges still prevail: How can the chemical compositions and macromolecular architectures of sustainable polymers be controlled and broadened? How can their processability and recyclability be enabled? How can they compete with petroleum-based counterparts in both cost and performance? Molecular-biomass-derived polymers, such as polymyrcene, polymenthide, and poly(ε-decalactone), have been employed for constru

Fracture of liquid crystal elastomers.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are anisotropic, viscoelastic materials integrating polymer networks and liquid crystals. While their mechanical responses have been extensively studied, their fracture behavior remains largely unexplored. Specifically, the effect of the deformation-director coupling on LCE fracture paths is unknown, and fracture criteria for LCEs are not yet established. To address this gap, we combine experimental and theoretical approaches to investigate fracture propagation in LCEs. We stretch edge-cracked monodomain LCE samples, recording their stress-stretch responses and

Energy conversion in magneto-rheological elastomers.

Magneto-rheological (MR) elastomers contain micro-/nano-sized ferromagnetic particles dispersed in a soft elastomer matrix, and their rheological properties (storage and loss moduli) exhibit a significant dependence on the application of a magnetic field (namely MR effect). Conversely, it is reported in this work that this multiphysics coupling is associated with an inverse effect (i.e. the dependence of the magnetic properties on mechanical strain), denoted as the pseudo-Villari effect. MR elastomers based on soft and hard silicone rubber matrices and carbonyl iron particles were fabricated a

Toughening Self-Healing Elastomers with Chain Mobility.

Enhancing fracture toughness and self-healing within soft elastomers is crucial to prolonging the operational lifetimes of soft devices. Herein, it is revealed that tuning the polymer chain mobilities of carboxylated-functionalized polyurethane through incorporating plasticizers or thermal treatment can enhance these properties. Self-healing is promoted as polymer chains gain greater mobility toward the broken interface to reassociate their bonds. Raising the temperature from 80 to 120 °C, the recovered work of fracture is increased from 2.86 to 123.7 MJ m-3. Improved fracture toughness is rea

Anisotropic colloidal micromuscles from liquid crystal elastomers.

Monodomain liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are new materials uniquely suitable for artificial muscles, as they undergo large reversible uniaxial shape changes, with strains of 20-500% and stresses of 10-100 kPa, falling exactly into the dynamic range of a muscle. LCEs exhibit little to no fatigue over thousands of actuation cycles. Their practical use has been limited, however, owing to the difficulty of synthesizing components, achieving consistent alignment during cross-linking across the whole material and often a high nematic-isotropic phase transition temperature. The most widely studied

Permeation of lipophilic drugs through synthetic elastomers.

Permeability studies were carried out with three lipophilic drugs, namely, phenytoin and primidone (both widely used in the treatment of epilepsies and convulsive disorders), and dapsone (a sulfone antimicrobial agent used in the treatment of leprosy and to a lesser extent in dermatitis herpetiformis) through silica-filled poly(dimethyl siloxane) (Silastic) membranes, and anisotropic membranes of poly(ether-urethane)/poly(dimethyl siloxane) block copolymer (Avcothane, Cardiothane). These polymers are used in medical implants and in various cardiovascular devices. While both polymers were perme

Mechanically Robust Photo-responsive Liquid Crystal Elastomers.

Photoresponsive liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are promising for applications in soft robotics and smart devices owing to their precise controllability and excellent stability. However, their practical utility is often hampered by limitations such as notably inferior mechanical properties, a single shape memory effect, and inadequate recyclability. To address these challenges, we developed a photoresponsive liquid crystal-polyurethane interpenetrating polymer network (IPN-0.75) that exhibits outstanding mechanical performance, including an ultrahigh tensile stress of 44 MPa and a fracture st

Toughening 3D printed elastomers using mechanophore crosslinkers.

Elastomeric materials are widely used in industrial application sectors including construction, automotives, soft robotics, and biomedicine. Light-based three-dimensional (3D) printing enables the manufacturing of elastomeric polymer networks with geometric and functional customizability beyond the capabilities of traditional manufacturing methods. These 3D printed polymer networks often suffer from premature mechanical failure of the material that limits their viability in load-bearing applications. One approach to toughen elastomers is to employ non-covalent additives as sacrificial bonds in

Elastic, strong and tough ionically conductive elastomers.

Stretchable elastic materials with high strength, toughness, and good ionic conductivity are highly desirable for wearable devices and stretchable batteries. Unfortunately, limited success has been reported to attain all of these properties simultaneously. Here, we report a family of ionically conductive elastomers (ICEs) without compromise between mechanical properties (high stiffness, reversible elasticity, fracture resistance) and ionic conductivity, by introducing a multiple network elastomer (MNE) architecture into a low T g polymer. The ICEs with the MNE architecture exhibit a room te

Direct Integration of Electrospun Polycaprolactone Fibers with Polydimethylsiloxane: Influence of Elastomer Formulation on Fiber-Elastomer Adhesion.

The increasing use of complex medical devices has intensified the need for reliable integration of multiple biocompatible materials. Silicone elastomers are widely used in implantable devices and frequently combined with materials designed to support cell growth. In such hybrid systems, robust interfacial adhesion is essential for mechanical stability and functional performance. In this study, electrospun poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) fibers were deposited directly onto two silicone elastomers, RTV 4420 and Sylgard 184, to form mechanically integrated bilayer structures. Adhesion of the electrosp

Amino alcohol-based degradable poly(ester amide) elastomers.

Currently available synthetic biodegradable elastomers are primarily composed of crosslinked aliphatic polyesters, which suffer from deficiencies including (1) high crosslink densities, which results in exceedingly high stiffness, (2) rapid degradation upon implantation, or (3) limited chemical moieties for chemical modification. Herein, we have developed poly(1,3-diamino-2-hydroxypropane-co-polyol sebacate)s, a new class of synthetic, biodegradable elastomeric poly(ester amide)s composed of crosslinked networks based on an amino alcohol. These crosslinked networks feature tensile Young's modu

Biomedical silicone elastomers as carriers for controlled release.

Biomedical silicone elastomers have been studied for their potential application as carriers for controlled release of drugs, since these materials display a unique combination of properties, which might be favorable to the above use. A two component silicone gel system was used and various cross-linker ratio was applied, in order to produce networks with varying crosslink density. Swelling experiments in toluene were run in order to evaluate the network characteristics. The silicone elastomer was loaded with salicylic acid and propranolol hydrochloride and their delivery in distilled water wa

Superstretchable, yet stiff, fatigue-resistant ligament-like elastomers.

Ligaments are flexible and stiff tissues around joints to support body movements, showing superior toughness and fatigue-resistance. Such a combination of mechanical properties is rarely seen in synthetic elastomers because stretchability, stiffness, toughness, and fatigue resistance are seemingly incompatible in materials design. Here we resolve this long-standing mismatch through a hierarchical crosslinking design. The obtained elastomer can endure 30,000% stretch and exhibit a Young's modulus of 18 MPa and toughness of 228 MJ m-3, outperforming all the reported synthetic elastomers. Further

Effects of outdoor weathering on facial prosthetic elastomers.

Physical weathering is usually responsible for the degradation of maxillofacial prosthetic elastomers and the replacement of prostheses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of outdoor weathering on the physical properties of four nonpigmented facial prosthetics after 1 year of exposure. In addition, simple mathematical models were developed to correlate the measured properties with irradiation time, including parameters with physical meaning. Three different medical-grade polydimethyl siloxanes (PDMSs) and an experimental chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) were examined in thi

3D-Printed, Ultrastretchable Polychloroprene Elastomers via Thiol-ene Photopolymerization.

Polychloroprene is a foundational high-performance synthetic elastomer known for its exceptional chemical stability, resistance, and mechanical properties, making it useful in many important applications ranging from aerospace seals to medical devices. Despite its widespread use, polychloroprene is almost exclusively processed by using thermal cure agents. Herein, we report the first-ever successful ultraviolet (UV) curing and three-dimensional (3D) printing of polychloroprene networks. Leveraging thiol-ene click chemistry, solid polychloroprene was dissolved in a solvent and UV-cured with var

Thyroplasty using a silicone elastomer implant.

Silicone has been used in a variety of forms as a replacement for soft tissue for more than three decades in the United States. The safety of this practice has come under scrutiny recently as our knowledge of the local, systemic, and immune effects of silicone has expanded. Contrary to what was once thought, silicone is not biologically inert. Silicone elastomer, however, has not been implicated in the development of systemic immune disease or carcinogenesis. The evidence to date supports the continued use of silicone elastomer implants in the larynx. It is clear, however, that continued inves

Frustrated smectic liquid crystal elastomers as multifunctional mechanical metamaterials.

Auxetics are materials that show a negative Poisson's ratio, i.e. thickening when under tensile strain. The discovery of nematic liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) as molecular auxetic materials was a paradigm-shift in the design of mechanical metamaterials as they are tuneable, transparent, scalable, non-porous and facile to fabricate. Here, we report that smectic LCEs extend known synthetic molecular auxetics to a second family. The LCEs are acrylate-based, lightly crosslinked ( ~ 8 mol%) and polymerised in the nematic phase of a precursor mixture. The resulting smectic-A LCEs exhibit correlat
