Replacement of Enterococcus faecalis by Enterococcus faecium as the predominant enterococcus in UK bacteraemias.

OBJECTIVES: To review temporal changes in the proportions of different Enterococcus species recorded in two UK bacteraemia surveillance systems. Antibiotic resistance trends were also considered. METHODS: We reviewed data for enterococci from 2001 to 2019 in: (a) the BSAC Resistance Surveillance Programme, which collected up to 7-10 bloodstream enterococci every year from each of 23-39 hospitals in the UK and Ireland and tested these centrally; and (b) PHE bacteraemia surveillance, using routine results from NHS microbiology laboratories in England. RESULTS: BSAC surveillance, based upon 206

Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis bacteremia: acquisition and outcome.

The incidence of enterococcal bacteremia due to Enterococcus faecium is increasing. To understand the clinical significance of E. faecium bacteremia, we compared 16 patients who were bacteremic due to E. faecium to 56 patients who were bacteremic due to Enterococcus faecalis. E. faecium bacteremia developed most frequently in severely ill patients with fever or hypothermia accompanied by CNS, cardiovascular, and/or pulmonary dysfunction, while E. faecalis bacteremia occurred most often in less seriously ill patients. Nosocomial acquisition, cancer, neutropenia, renal insufficiency, current cor

In vitro activity of phenothiazine derivatives in Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium.

The antimicrobial activity of the phenothiazine derivatives thioridazine and prochlorperazine have been evaluated with 11 Enterococcus faecalis strains and 9 Enterococcus faecium strains, originating from human infections and animal faecal flora. We found that all E. faecalis and E. faecium strains, regardless of their susceptibility to commonly used antibiotics, were inhibited by thioridazine at a concentration of 16-32 microg/ml and by prochlorperazine at a concentration of 32-64 microg/ml. Combinations of the antibiotics vancomycin or ampicillin and thioridazine and prochlorperazine at subi

In vitro adherence of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium to urinary catheters.

The in vitro adherence of ten strains of Enterococcus faecalis and ten strains of Enterococcus faecium to siliconized latex urinary catheters and to silicone elastomer was evaluated. Bacterial suspensions (2.5x10(5) cfu/ml) in tryptic soy broth containing 0.5 cm segments from each type of catheter were incubated at 37 degrees C. At specified intervals, the segments were washed to remove nonadherent bacteria and sonicated for 1 min, and colony-forming units were quantified. Bacterial adherence occurred rapidly, reaching maximal peaks after 24 h of incubation. Enterococcus faecium adherence to b

Vancomycin-resistant enterococcus.

Vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) rapidly is becoming a significant cause of nosocomial infections. VRE lives in the environment (e.g., bedside tables, side rails, door knobs) for five to seven days, making transmission difficult to eliminate. Patients who are immunosuppressed or are receiving multiple antibiotics are particularly susceptible to developing VRE infections. Nursing management is the cornerstone of prevention and treatment. Nurses need to identify patients at risk, maintain isolation, and educate patients, family members, and other healthcare team members.

Enterococcus Phage vB_EfaS_HEf13 as an Anti-Biofilm Agent Against Enterococcus faecalis.

Enterococcus faecalis is a Gram-positive bacterium that is frequently found in the periapical lesion of patients with apical periodontitis. Its biofilm formation in root canal is closely related to the development of refractory apical periodontitis by providing increased resistance to endodontic treatments. Phage therapy has recently been considered as an efficient therapeutic strategy in controlling various periodontal pathogens. We previously demonstrated the bactericidal capacities of Enterococcus phage vB_EfaS_HEf13 (phage HEf13) against clinically-isolated E. faecalis strains. Here, we in

Gut Microbiota Predict Enterococcus Expansion but Not Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus Acquisition.

Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) is a leading cause of hospital-acquired infections and continues to spread despite widespread implementation of pathogen-targeted control guidelines. Commensal gut microbiota provide colonization resistance to VRE, but the role of gut microbiota in VRE acquisition in at-risk patients is unknown. To address this gap in our understanding, we performed a case-control study of gut microbiota in hospitalized patients who did (cases) and did not (controls) acquire VRE. We matched case subjects to control subjects by known risk factors and "time at risk," defin

Antibacterial potential of five phages in controlling Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium.

BACKGROUND: Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis are opportunistic pathogens that form an increasing concern for hospital-acquired infections due to their natural and acquired antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Although phage therapy has gained global interest as a response to emerging AMR, Enterococcus remains an understudied target for phage therapy. In this context, we aimed to isolate Enterococcus-specific phages and study their in vitro infection efficacy when combined into cocktails, in the presence of antibiotics and human serum and against bacterial biofilms. RESULTS: We isolat

Risk Factors for Acute Cholangitis Caused by Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Acute cholangitis (AC) is a potentially life-threatening bacterial infection, and timely antimicrobial treatment, faster than that achieved with bacterial cultures, is recommended. Although the current guidelines refer to empirical antimicrobial treatment, various kinds of antimicrobial agents have been cited because of insufficient analyses on the spectrum of pathogens in AC. Enterococcus spp. is one of the most frequently isolated Gram-positive bacteria from the bile of patients with AC, but its risk factors have not been extensively studied. This study aimed to analyze the

[Differentiating clinical characteristics in bacteriemia caused by Enterococcus faecalis or Enterococcus faecium].

INTRODUCTION: Enterococci are responsible for severe infections, such as endocarditis and bacteremia. During recent decades, enterococcal infections have grown in importance because of the increasing number of cases. Knowledge of the factors predisposing to acquisition of infection by E. faecalis or E. faecium may be useful to improve the empirical treatment. METHODS: Retrospective study of patients diagnosed with enterococcal bacteremia and hospitalized over a 7-year period (January 2000-December 2006), analyzing demographic data, clinical and microbiological characteristics, antibiotic expo

[High level of aminoglycoside resistance among Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium strains].

Enterococcus sp. strains are believed as important reason of serious nosocomial infections currently. These infections are cured by using combination of beta-lactams and aminoglycosides for their treatment. Enterococcus sp. resistant to high-level doses of aminoglycosides, beta-lactams and vancomycin are responsible for therapeutic failure. The aim of our study was to evaluate the incidence of isolation and susceptibility to antibiotics of HLAR Enterococcus sp. strains isolated between 2007 and 2010 from the patients of University Hospital No. 1 of dr A. Enterococcus infections in foals.

Enterococci have been increasing in prevalence in foal sepsis over the past three decades. There are no published studies in the peer-reviewed literature documenting common sites of infection, antimicrobial susceptibility, or outcome specifically associated with enterococcal infections in foals. Our objectives were to evaluate the sites of origin, antimicrobial susceptibility, and survival outcome to discharge in foals with enterococcal infections compared with foals with sepsis of another bacterial etiology. Seventy-five foals 0-30 days of age with cultures positive for Enterococcus and 170 c

Enterococcus faecium 129 BIO 3B is classified as Enterococcus lactis 129 BIO 3B.

Enterococcus faecium 129 BIO 3B is a lactic acid bacterium that has been safely used as a probiotic product for over 100 years. Recently, concerns about its safety have arisen because some species of E. faecium belong to the vancomycin-resistant enterococci. The groups of E. faecium with less pathogenic potential have been split into a separate species (Enterococcus lactis). In this study, I investigated the phylogenetic classification and safety of E. faecium 129 BIO 3B as well as E. faecium 129 BIO 3B-R, which is naturally resistant to ampicillin.
