Binding women: Ethnology, skeletal deformations, and violence against women.

Control over women in different cultures has taken its form in many ways. Examination of direct forms of control in the bioarchaeological re … ng of women" in the forms of foot-binding, neck rings, and tight-lacing will be used to explore how ethnology and skeletal markers may reveal something about how the complexity of indirect cultural violence can be seen directly on the bodies of women.

PALEOPATHOLOGY OF PRE-COLUMBIAN MUMMIES AT THE MUSEUM OF ANTHROPOLOGY AND ETHNOLOGY IN FLORENCE.

We performed a histopathological study on the mummified tissue specimens of seven pre-Columbian mummies which arrived in Italy in the second half of the 19th century and are housed in the Section of Anthropology and Ethnology of the Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence. The results confirm that the modern techniques of pathological anatomy can be successfidly applied on mummifed tissues, so as to perform important paleopathological diagnoses. Among the results obtained from this study there is the only known complete paleopathological study of Chagas' disease (American Trypa…

Genetic studies among endogamous groups of Saraswats in Western India.

Three groups of Saraswat Brahmans in Western India and a group of Goan Catholics ethnologically related to Saraswats were studied for various genetic markers. Saraswats have higher A than B with an Rh(D)-negative incidence ranging from 10 to 17%. All the groups have low incidence of G-6-PD deficiency (up to 1%). Incidence of thalassaemia trait ranges from 1 to 6%. Gm(1) was present in 85-87%. Intergroup differences suggest genetic closeness between the various groups with genetic distance ranging from 0.8 to 1.5. Genetic relationship between Goan Catholics and Chitrapur Saraswats confirms the

[Fertility in men after mumps infection without manifestations of orchitis].

The study presents results of an investigation on male fertility after mumps infection without clinically manifested mumps orchitis. The study included 30 patients, but 10 were excluded because of other ethnologic factors connected to male infertility. Out of 20 patients 12 were fertile, while 8 were subfertile. All of these 8 subfertile patients were with asthenospermia, that is with decreased sperm motility.

The paleopathology of an Aleutian mummy.

A multidisciplinary team examined an Aleutian mummy from the collection of the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology of Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. The mummy, dating from the early 18th century, was of a middle-aged woman who had suffered from pulmonary and ear infections, atherosclerosis, pediculosis, and degenerative joint disease. Another finding was anthracosis, common in ancient bodies and related to indoor heating and cooking fires. Skeletal lead was not found, in contrast with the high levels seen in modern persons. No neoplasms were identified, again consistent with the r…

[The abdominal complications of ventriculoperitoneal diversions].

We report several cases of abdominal complications in hydrocephalus children with ventriculoperitoneal shunts implanted by different ethnology, as well as the pathology produced. The number of children affected was 16, although some of them had suffered more than one complication, making up a total of 25 cases. The most frequent trouble was due to the intraperitoneal catheter fall, followed by intestinal perforation at different levels, allowing the catheter to get out through the anus, abdominal wall or surgical incision. Some intestinal occlusive situations was due to either volvulus or exte…

Iron and infection in infancy--report on field studies in Papua New Guinea: 1. Demographic description and pilot surveys.

Madang district was selected for a longitudinal study of the effects of iron prophylaxis on infectious morbidity in infancy and the topography, climate, domicile, ethnology, demography, disease patterns, nutrition and health services of the district are described. The area has a tropical, humid climate and a mixed economy. Pneumonia was the main killing disease at all ages, and malaria was endemic. A base hospital and well organized maternal and child health services ensured that morbidity surveillance would be optimal. Pilot haematological surveys confirmed a high incidence of anaemia in infa…

Turning acne on/off via mTORC1.

Over the past 10 years, the increase in comprehension of the mechanisms behind acne has been truly exponential. Starting with the ethnological work of Cordain, accelerated by the epidemiological work of Adebamowo, supported by the clinical trials of Smith and Mann, Kwon, DiLandro and others, the interface of diet and acne is coming into focus. Melnik now presents an exceptional pair of papers that illustrate for dermatologists what translational research is all about. The Western diet, the role of dairy, FoxO1 and mTORC1, the interplay of agonists and antagonists, therapeutics present and futu

[The inception for the prevention of alcohol embryopathy since 3000 years ago?].

The etiology of alcoholic embryopathy-maternal use of alcoholic beverages during pregnancy-only is known about 20 years. But already 3,000 years ago the authors of the Old Testament warned the wife of Manoah to drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy (judges 13,2-25). Investigation of the historical, ethnological, ideological and mythological background of this law shows, that this text reflected ideas of social alternatives and reforms from the 9th century before our time-but not any knowledge about embryo- and fetotoxic effects of alcoholic beverages during pregnancy.

Assessment of sagittal spinopelvic parameters in a Taiwanese population with spondylolysis by the EOS imaging system: a retrospective radiological analysis.

BACKGROUND: The impact of sagittal spinopelvic alignment on spondylolysis is well established in Caucasian populations. However, prior studies suggest that people from different ethnological backgrounds showed divergence, and a few studies that focused on Asian populations reported conflicting results. The aim of this study is to use the EOS imaging system to evaluate the spinopelvic parameters of spondylolysis patients, and their relationship with spondylolisthesis, disc degeneration, and age in a Taiwanese population. METHODS: Radiographic sagittal spinopelvic parameters for 45 spondylolysi

From the margins to the core: village and community scientists should increasingly shape the future of ethnobiology and ethnoecology.

Ethnobiology was not only created as a field to understand the relationship between humans and their environments; it emerged from direct engagement with rural and Indigenous communities. Yet the great paradox is that, despite its field-based origins, the discipline continues to be reproduced within urban academic spaces that often exclude those who are assumed to be at the very heart of knowledge production. In this editorial, we do not simply propose the "inclusion" of rural or Indigenous communities. Instead, we call for a radical repositioning of the knowledge itself: Who can be considered
