Extensive research underscores that we interpret the world through metaphors; moreover, common metaphors are a useful means to enhance the pursuit of personal and collective goals. In the context of planetary health-defined as the interdependent vitality of all natural and anthropogenic ecosystems (social, political and otherwise)-one enduring metaphor can be found in the concept of "Spaceship Earth". Although not without criticism, the term "Spaceship Earth" has been useful to highlight both resource limitations and the beauty and fragility of delicate ecosystems that sustain life. Rene Dubos

Preparedness theory is one of the most influential ideas in explaining the origin of specific phobias. The theory proposes that fear conditioning is selective to animals that have posed a threat to survival throughout human evolution, and that acquired fear memories to such threats are resistant to extinction. We reviewed fear conditioning studies testing whether autonomic responses conditioned to pictures of snakes and spiders show greater resistance to extinction than neutral cues. We identified 32 fear conditioning experiments published in 23 studies including 1887 participants. Increased r

Cooper et al. (Research Articles, 19 February 2021, p. 811) propose that a weakening geomagnetic field prior to the Laschamps Excursion explains megafaunal extinctions and human cultural changes that they claim happened 42,000 years ago. However, these authors misrepresent both the data and interpretations of cited work on extinctions and human cultural changes, so the specific claims they make about extinctions and cultural changes are false.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe stress-dependent psychiatric disorder characterized by impairment of fear memory extinction; however, biological markers to determine impaired fear memory extinction in PTSD remain unclear. In male mice with PTSD-like behaviors elicited by single prolonged stress (SPS), 19 differentially expressed proteins in the hippocampus were identified compared with controls. Among them, a biological macromolecular protein named deleted in colorectal cancer (DCC) was highly upregulated. Specific overexpression of DCC in the hippocampus induced similar impa

Angiosperm reproductive evolution is traditionally linked to the end-Cretaceous biotic crisis and subsequent ecological restructuring. Here, we report diverse and unexpectedly large diaspores (dispersal units) from an in situ late Campanian (74.6 million years ago) tropical forest from the Jose Creek Formation in New Mexico. Nearly 80 distinct diaspore morphotypes demonstrate that the flora had increased morphological specialization and an exceptionally large average and range of diaspore volume comparable to the Cenozoic records. These findings suggest that substantial increases in reproducti

Pseudosuchia, one of the two main clades of Archosauria (Reptilia: Diapsida), suffered a major decline in lineage diversity during the Triassic-Jurassic (TJ) mass extinction (approx. 201 Ma). Crocodylomorpha, including living crocodilians and their extinct relatives, is the only group of pseudosuchians that survived into the Jurassic. We reassess changes in pseudosuchian morphological diversity (disparity) across this time interval, using considerably larger sample sizes than in previous analyses. Our results show that metrics of pseudosuchian disparity did not change significantly across the

The materials mentioned above are reextracted from an ether solution by 2 N sodium hydroxide. The UV extinction of the aqueous layer at 232 nm and 30 degrees C is followed by means of a slave recorder. The original extinction is found by back-extrapolating to the time of re-extraction. It has to be corrected for the "biological matrix" by subtracting the extinction value after complete hydrolysis. Most interfering substances in the ether solution (carboxylic acids, barbiturates) may be removed previously by washing with aqueous buffers (pH 7.0 and 10.5).

Two decades of conditioned fear studies reveal impaired extinction in traumatized military and civilian populations with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We aimed to test fear extinction in women with military sexual trauma (MST), a highly traumatized and largely understudied population. Our well-established, acoustic startle-based fear acquisition and extinction paradigm was administered to 51 age-matched female veterans with prior exposure to MST receiving healthcare at one of three VA Medical Centers. Thirty women had a PTSD diagnosis and 21 did not, per clinician-administered and self

Stress-related disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and panic disorders, are disproportionately prevalent in females. However, the biological mechanism underlying these sex differences in the prevalence rate remains unclear. In the present study, we examined sex differences in fear memory, fear extinction, and spontaneous recovery of fear. We investigated the presence of sex differences in recent and remote fear memory in mice using contextual fear conditioning, as well as sex differences in spontaneous recovery of fear memory using a consecutive fear extinction paradigm. Island endemic terrestrial vertebrates, shaped by long-term isolation and ecological specialization, are particularly vulnerable to extinction pressure in the Anthropocene. However, cross-taxon extinction patterns and their drivers remain poorly understood. Here, we compiled a global dataset of 31,865 terrestrial vertebrates, including more than 7500 island endemic species, to evaluate the patterns and drivers of extinction risk in island endemics, in comparison with continent endemics and dual-range species. We found that island endemics face significantly higher extinction risk than non-isla

The Permian-Triassic mass extinction triggered a fundamental reorganization of marine ecosystems, yet the community-level functional dynamics of early marine reptile radiations remain understudied. Here we quantify ecospace dynamics of Triassic marine reptile faunas across an approximately 20-million-year sequence in South China, integrating 10 functional traits of fossil taxa and modern ecological analogues. We identify five ecotypes defined by habitat use, foraging modes and trophic strategy. Statistical analyses reveal cumulative and incremental faunal assembly in South China in three phase

Nearly all modern animal phyla emerged 'suddenly' during the early Cambrian Period about 518 million years ago (Ma) in an event known as the Cambrian explosion. Following this evolutionary milestone, the marine invertebrate fossil record is punctuated by five major mass extinction events, collectively called the 'Big Five'. These events include the end-Ordovician, Late Devonian, end-Permian, end-Triassic, and end-Cretaceous mass extinctions (Figure 1). Among them, the end-Permian extinction was the most catastrophic event, resulting in the loss of approximately 81% of marine species within a s

We investigate patterns of phylogenetic selectivity of extinction in early aquatic vertebrates from the Silurian to the Carboniferous, an interval punctuated by one of the "Big Five" mass extinctions and marked by many critical anatomical (e.g., jaws, limbs) and ecological (e.g., macrophagy, terrestrialization) vertebrate evolutionary innovations. Using a new >1,300 taxon, formally inferred supertree, we show that phylogenetic extinction clustering in early vertebrates varied through time and between major ecomorphological divisions of the tree. At the end of the Silurian and into the Early De

How biodiversity is changing in our time represents a major concern for all organismal biologists. Anthropogenic changes to our planet are decreasing species diversity through the negative effects of pollution, habitat destruction, direct extirpation of species, and climate change. But major biotic changes-including those that have both increased and decreased species diversity-have happened before in Earth's history. Biodiversity dynamics in past eras provide important context to understand ecological responses to current environmental change. The work of assessing biodiversity is woven into

Tharsis, an extinct genus of ray-finned fish (Actinopterygii) in the Late Jurassic, has but tiny teeth and is considered a micro-carnivore/visual zooplanktivore. A recent review of collection material, however, uncovered several specimens of Tharsis from the Late Jurassic (ca. 152 Ma) Plattenkalk deposits of the Solnhofen Archipelago with belemnites wedged in mouth and gill apparatus. In all cases, the rostrum reexits through the gill apparatus, whereas the broad phragmocone of the belemnite is firmly lodged in the mouth opening. Apparently, these micro-carnivore fish were in the habit of suck

Behavioral, biological, and physiological reactions following posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are heterogeneous, particularly between sexes. Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP38) is identified as a viable sex-specific marker of PTSD and fear conditioning impairments in women. However, no studies have examined the association between PACAP38 and fear extinction in humans to inform treatment mechanisms, and the association between PACAP38 and PTSD is variable, requiring further investigation. Participants (n = 123) included representative proportions of women (48.8 %)

Extinction describes the process of attenuating behavioral responses to neutral stimuli when they no longer provide the reinforcement that has been maintaining the behavior. There is close correspondence between fear and human anxiety, and therefore studies of extinction learning might provide insight into the biological nature of anxiety-related disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder, and they might help to develop strategies to treat them. Preclinical research aims to aid extinction learning and to induce targeted plasticity in extinction circuits to consolidate the newly formed me

Enamel histology may provide valuable insights into dental growth and life history traits. However, this method presents significant challenges for extinct species, particularly as the periodicity of the increments observed cannot be tested experimentally. Here, we propose a standardized methodological framework to formalize what has been done in the literature and help researchers working with fossil taxa. We applied this framework to a fossil dataset composed of 19 molars belonging to four species of Toxodontia (Notoungulata, Mammalia) - an extinct sub-order of South American notoungulates k

At the end of the Cretaceous, a bolide impact wiped out ~75% of life on Earth, but turtles show minimal gross anatomical changes. Herein, we examine the shell histology from trionychid turtles 2 million years before and 8 million years after the extinction event. We collected over 25,000 semi-quantitative and quantitative measurements and statistically compared them against latitude, stratigraphic position, lithologic context, ontogeny, phylogeny, and K/Pg survivorship to better understand the various ways in which each respective variable influences histology. We find that trionychids from mu

Exceptional braincase preservation in some Devonian placoderm fishes permits interpretation of muscles and cranial nerves controlling eye movement. Placoderms are the only jawed vertebrates with anterior/posterior obliques as in the jawless lamprey, but with the same function as the superior/inferior obliques of other gnathostomes. Evidence of up to seven extraocular muscles suggests that this may be the primitive number for jawed vertebrates. Two muscles innervated by cranial nerve 6 suggest homologies with lampreys and tetrapods. If the extra muscle acquired by gnathostomes was the internal
