Blepharitis and Neoplasms of the Canine Eyelid Margin and Skin.

Canine eyelid masses (tumors) should include the differential clinical diagnoses of neoplasia and blepharitis. They have many common clinical signs including tumor, alopecia, and hyperemia. Biopsy and histologic examination remains the most effective diagnostic test to establish a confirmed diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Neoplasms are typically benign (tarsal gland adenomas, melanocytomas, and so forth) with the exception of lymphosarcoma. Blepharitis is noted in 2 age groups including dogs aged less than 1.5 years and middle aged to older dogs. Most blepharitis cases will respond to spe

Histiocytic Sarcoma of the Eyelid: An Uncommon Presentation of a Rare Neoplasm.

Histiocytic sarcoma is an extremely rare malignancy typically presenting in extranodal sites, including the gastrointestinal tract, lung, nasal cavity, and soft tissue. Primary presentation in the skin is an even rarer entity, with only one prior case reported in the eyelid skin. Herein, we describe a case of histiocytic sarcoma that presented in the eyelid of an 80-year-old man. The lesion presented as a rapidly growing left lower eyelid lesion over 4 months. Shave biopsy revealed histologic and immunophenotypic findings most consistent with a morphologically low-grade histiocytic sarcoma. Co

"Pseudo-pseudochalazion": giant chalazion mimicking eyelid neoplasm.

A 33-year-old man presented with a solid lesion encompassing the entire left upper eyelid. Multiple biopsies revealed lipogranuloma consistent with chalazion. The induration resolved after multiple triamcinolone injections. This is the only case report to our knowledge of a chalazion that involved the entire upper eyelid.

Apocrine Cystadenoma of the Eyelid, a Rare Neoplasm: Expanded Immunohistologic Profile.

An 83-year-old woman experienced the slow enlargement of a right lower eyelid mass. Histopathologic examination of the excised tissue showed a mucin-filled cystic tumor emanating from an apocrine bilayer that displayed bleb-like apocrine decapitation secretion. The outer flattened myoepithelial layer of the bilayer reacted with immunohistochemical stains for smooth muscle actin and calponin. In foci, the tumor exhibited a cribriform architecture with small pockets of mucin. Tumor cells were reactive for cytokeratin 7, Gross Cystic Disease Fluid Protein 15 (BRST-2), estrogen and progesterone re

Apocrine Cystadenoma of the Eyelid: A Rare Palpebral Neoplasm. Report of 2 Cases.

The authors report 2 cases of apocrine cystadenoma of the eyelid, 1 of which was studied with immunohistochemical and other special stains. While a previous report describes the tumor in a palpebro-orbital location, no other detailed descriptions of a purely eyelid location are present in the literature. Apocrine cystadenoma occupies an unusual portion of the spectrum of Moll gland tumors of the eyelid. It has no definitive clinical characteristics and may be diagnosed pathologically by hematoxylin-eosin-stained sections.

Treatment of eyelid epithelial neoplasm by targeting sonic hedgehog signaling: an experimental study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of cyclopamine, an inhibitor of the Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signal, on the growth of an epithelial neoplasm. METHODS: Chemically induced eyelid tumors in XPC-null mice (n=40) were treated daily with a subcutaneous injection of cyclopamine (1 mg/animal) for 7 days. The animals were killed after bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) labeling, and the tumors were histologically examined. An in vitro study was conducted by using a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cell line. The SCC cells were treated with 0, 12.5, or 25.0 microg/ml recombinant Shh (rShh) and either 0 or 100 microM cy

Cytoreduction combined with cryosurgery for the treatment of eyelid neoplasms in dogs: Clinical outcomes and histopathological characterization.

Eyelid neoplasms are among the most common periocular conditions in dogs and can lead to significant ocular morbidity if left untreated. Although surgical excision with blepharoplasty remains the standard of care, cytoreduction combined with cryosurgery has emerged as a less invasive alternative that preserves eyelid integrity. This prospective study evaluated 30 dogs with eyelid masses treated by cytoreductive excision followed by two freeze-thaw cycles delivered via a contact CO₂ cryosurgical unit. Risk factors, tumor types, pre- and postoperative ophthalmic signs were assessed and graded ac

Rare Malignant Tumors of the Eyelid: A Comprehensive Clinicopathologic, Molecular, and Management Review of Adnexal and Neuroendocrine Neoplasms.

Although basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma represent the most frequent malignant tumors of the eyelids, a diverse group of rarer adnexal and neuroendocrine neoplasms also demonstrates a strong predilection for this anatomic site. These tumors, including sebaceous carcinoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, primary cutaneous mucinous carcinoma, endocrine-mucin-producing eccrine gland carcinoma (EMPSGC), primary apocrine adenocarcinoma, and primary signet ring (histiocytoid) carcinoma, are characterized by unique epidemiologic patterns, biologic behavior, and histopathologic feat

Adnexal neoplasms of the eye.

Adnexal neoplasms of the eyelid encompass a wide variety of benign and malignant tumors of sebaceous, follicular, and sweat gland origin. Due to the specialized structures of the eyelid, these neoplasms present differently when compared with those of other locations. Although most dermatologists and ophthalmologists are familiar with the commonly reported adnexal tumors of the eyelid, such as hidrocystoma, pilomatrixoma, and sebaceous carcinoma, many other adnexal neoplasms have been reported at this unique anatomic site. Accurate and timely identification of these neoplasms is essential, as a

The Clinical Characteristics of Eyelid Tumors: A Three-Year Retrospective Study at A Tertiary Eye Hospital.

OBJECTIVES: Eyelid tumors are neoplasms commonly diagnosed in routine ophthalmology practices. Some malignant tumors may mimic benign lesions and inflammatory conditions, which can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment. The study aimed to identify the clinical characteristics of eyelid tumors at a tertiary eye hospital by analyzing retrospective data from a 3-year observational study. METHODS: A descriptive retrospective study was carried out on 1295 patients diagnosed with eyelid tumors between January 2022 and December 2024. All patients with eyelid tumors who underwent histopathological

Immunoblastic T-cell lymphoma presenting as an eyelid tumor.

A 59-year-old white man presented with an ulcerating mass of the left upper eyelid of 6 months' duration. A biopsy specimen of the tumor was diagnosed as an immunoblastic T-cell malignant lymphoma. The lesion completely regressed after 4000 cGy of cobalt-60 radiation therapy. In the ensuing 33 months, multiple, widespread skin nodules of the same neoplasm developed including a right upper eyelid tumor. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of an immunoblastic T-cell lymphoma initially manifesting as an eyelid neoplasm.

Pathology of eyelid tumors.

The eyelids are composed of four layers: skin and subcutaneous tissue including its adnexa, striated muscle, tarsus with the meibomian glands, and the palpebral conjunctiva. Benign and malignant tumors can arise from each of the eyelid layers. Most eyelid tumors are of cutaneous origin, mostly epidermal, which can be divided into epithelial and melanocytic tumors. Benign epithelial lesions, cystic lesions, and benign melanocytic lesions are very common. The most common malignant eyelid tumors are basal cell carcinoma in Caucasians and sebaceous gland carcinoma in Asians. Adnexal and stromal tu

Ductopapillary apocrine carcinoma of the eyelid metastatic to the parotid gland: report of a case diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy.

Ductopapillary apocrine carcinoma (DPAC) of the eyelid is a rare malignant neoplasm in the periocular region. The relative rarity of this tumor is a diagnostic challenge to the cytopathologist, especially when present as a metastatic lesion to an intraparotid lymph node, where the differential diagnosis includes primary parotid neoplasms, as well as various other metastatic malignancies. There are only a few reported cases of recurrent and metastatic DPAC of the eyelid, and to our knowledge, metastatic DPAC diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) has not been described. We report a c
