Clinical-grade plant-made nanomaterials: from process design to the construction of a manufacturing facility.

Plant-made nanomaterials are proteinaceous elements that are emerging as multi-purpose and versatile tools in the therapeutic landscape. In the context of autoimmune diseases, Tomato Bushy Stunt Virus (TBSV) has been previously explored as a platform for inducing immune tolerance by displaying disease-specific immunodominant peptides-offering a potential path toward disease remission. In this study, we developed a dedicated facility and a Good Manufacturing-compliant Process for producing TBSV-based nanoparticles engineered to display peptides relevant to specific autoimmune disorders. Data co

Hierarchical Spatial Design for Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinics: Healing Architecture Approach.

BackgroundResearch has demonstrated that therapeutic architectural spaces can significantly enhance patient treatment outcomes. However, current designs underutilize therapeutic potential due to three key limitations: poor environmental comfort, suboptimal health metrics, and weak cultural immersion.PurposeThis study develops a healing-oriented spatial design framework for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) clinics.MethodsForty-one requirements were identified through literature review, interviews, and WELL v2 standards, which were refined to 23 core needs based on environmental healing theory

Prioritizing barriers and strategies for non-toxic material adoption in interior design.

BACKGROUND: Growing concern about indoor environmental quality and occupant health has underscored the need to select interior materials that minimize harmful chemical emissions and reduce exposure to toxic substances. However, despite growing awareness of healthier interior environments, the adoption of non-toxic materials remains limited due to technical, informational, economic, and organizational challenges. METHODS: This study adopted a three-stage multi-method approach. First, a Comprehensive Literature Review (CLR) was conducted to identify 19 barriers and 15 strategies related to the

Quantifying inner corridor space design elements for embedded retirement facilities based on eye-tracking.

Embedded retirement facilities (ERFs) offer the dual advantages of resource integration and personalized services within a community-based setting. In these facilities, inner corridors serve as the primary circulation spaces for older adults. However, the design of these inner corridors often tends to be monotonous and enclosed, which can hinder social interaction and induce feelings of confinement and psychological discomfort. To address this issue, this study focuses on the spatial tension and behavioral accommodation characteristics exhibited by different inner corridor nodes, examining the

Structural codes and patient safety: does strict compliance make sense?

The authors of this Comment note recent trends rigidifying the enforcement of building and safety codes for health care facilities and compare the estimated costs (in terms of dollars spent) of those trends with their anticipated benefits (in terms of potential years of human life saved). They estimate that for each potential year of life saved, strict enforcement of the Life Safety Code of the National Fire Protection Association would cost $12.7 to $63.5 million for hospitals and $1.1 to $2.6 million for nursing homes, the latter figure based on Massachusett's experience. These figures are c

Prepare to protect: Operating and maintaining a tornado safe room.

Operating and maintaining a tornado safe room can be critical to the effective continuity of business operations because a firm's most valuable asset is its people. This paper describes aspects of operations and maintenance (O&M) for existing tornado safe rooms as well as a few planning and design aspects that affect the ultimate operation of a safe room for situations where a safe room is planned, but not yet constructed. The information is based on several Federal Emergency Management Agency safe room publications that provide guidance on emergency management and operations, as well as the d

Bone finds: a challenge to forensic science.

The study presented here is based on 176 forensic dental reports compiled between 1993 and 2001. The bulk of the research took place in 1997, when major construction at Potsdamer Platz and Lehrter Bahnhof in central Berlin required the excavation of considerable quantities of earth. As building proceeded here, at 'Europe's biggest construction site', it revealed not only a large number of long bones, but also a great many skulls and skull fragments. In five instances, complete skeletons were unearthed. Many of the bones ultimately proved to be of animal origin. The police were not instructed t

Design of a Theranostics Center.

Nuclear medicine radiopharmaceutical therapies or theranostics procedures may be performed in a number of environments within medical facilities. Some examples are having a dedicated room within a Nuclear Medicine Department, using inpatient units, clinics, or via a theranostics center. All methods may be regulatory compliant, effective, and advantageous depending on the medical facility's current environment. Organizations may consider designing, constructing, and implementing a freestanding theranostic center because of the potential advantages it can offer. A dedicated theranostic center ca

Building the green way.

Just five or six years ago, the term "green building" evoked visions of barefoot, tie-dyed, granola-munching denizens. There's been a large shift in perception. Of course, green buildings are still known for conserving natural resources by, for example, minimizing on-site grading, using alternative materials, and recycling construction waste. But people now see the financial advantages as well. Well-designed green buildings yield lower utility costs, greater employee productivity, less absenteeism, and stronger attraction and retention of workers than standard buildings do. Green materials, me

Housing and health. The role of the environmental health practitioner.

From a health standpoint, the residential environment is both the dwelling and its associated areas. The dwelling and related area are interrelated both in terms of sanitation problems affecting physical health and other problems affecting mental health. The residential environment certainly represents a complicated public health problem. The issue of inadequate shelter has been addressed throughout history, but the relationship of shelter and health brings it to our attention now. It is estimated that one out of every four persons in our nation lives with some kind of shelter deficiency. The

Hospital Environment and Medical Sociology: User-Centered Environmental Sociology Model Based on a Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the relationship between environmental quality and medical sociology in hospitals and suggests a conceptual framework for understanding their interrelation. BACKGROUND: Despite the importance of environmental properties in the sociological approach to users' health and the role of medical sociology research in the design of hospital environments, few studies have been conducted in the field of hospital environments and medical sociology interrelation. Therefore, this article attempts to fill this gap in our knowledge. METHODS: A systematic review was carried
